You can file a religious exemption in any school/day care with relative ease.
This is absolutely NOT true. You need to hire a lawyer and prove that you are actually a very active participant in a religion that forbids vaccinations. Its a long and expensive process, and they can keep the kids out of school until they come to a final decision. If a child is exempt for medical reasons, it must be very compelling, probably requiring such a reaction that they were hospitalized, and a notarized document from the pediatrician. I seriously doubt any ped will falsify such a document just to please the idiot parents, and if they do they should have their license taken away.
Flame away if anyone must, but with measles and pertussis going around like wildfire, parents who don't vaccinate their children are the most selfish people on this earth. Not only are they putting thier own kids at risk, but other children and adults who catching these diseases could kill them or cause harm such as those with cancer or pregnant women.
This is NY. Immigrants who are NOT vaccinated are moving here by the thousands and bringing with them all the diseases that we haven't seen in years.
I have taken care of children who had pertussis and measles, and some of them didn't make it
Sadly, they weren't the children of parents who refused to vaccinate, they were children who were too young for the vaccine who picked it up from other people who were not vaccinated. It is very sad.

This actually is not true...you do not need to hire a lawyer nor do you need to prove that you are active in a religion. my sisters children are not vaccinated and her 6 yo is in public school. She had to fill out the religious exemption form and have it notarized. No questions were asked

I work at a Charter school in NC and it is beyond easy! They just say "religious exemption" and they're exempt. No questions asked!

Maybe it depends on the school? I know this is true in NYC for public schools, I have heard of people having to do this because the school challenged them. This has come up in conversation with pediatricians I know.
Hopefully her child does not get sick or make someone else sick.
Not directed towards the previous poster but I would love to know what "religion" forbids vaccination? I work in a very diverse community where there are very religious Jewish and Muslim families and they believe in vaccinations. Most Christians believe in them, except for those extreme cult types that would rather let their kids die than seek medical treatment. There have been cases where children have died because of this and the parents were prosecuted.

I'm pretty sure Christian Science is against all medication.

Sorry, but none of what you said is true. No one I know had to hire a lawyer or prove that they were active in a religion. They can't even ask you if you are active or ask to see statements from your pastor/priest, since the law allows for you to claim exemption based off of your personal religious beliefs. All it takes it writing a letter detailing said beliefs, notarizing it, and sending it to the principle of the school. Almost everyone I know who filed an exemption was granted it on the first try and the school district asked no questions.
Also, if a school district denies an exemption the family can file an appeal with the commissioner of schools, and still get their exemption approved even though the district denied them (of course providing they didn't change their stance or make any statements contrary to their religious beliefs. .

Part of my family is Christian Science. They believe in prayer as the first and foremost form of healing. However, they aren't against all medication. Christian Scientists are permitted to seek alternative methods to prayer for healing, according to their religion.

Oh, okay, because I have friends who are Christian Science, and they refuse all medication.

Re: Not vaccinating your child and daycare/public school
I know that the DOH in NYC does not just grant exemptions, especially now due to the outbreak of measles and pertussis.
For all of those who don't vaccinate, what is it that you do then when your kids get sick? Do you bring them to the doctor and accept antibiotics or if they needed surgery do you allow that?
If you are such an expert on childhood diseases and a self trained doctor based on what you read off of the internet, then next time your kids are sick or injured take care of it yourself.
