And not that this means anything, but the NYC schools did not close a single time during my 12 years of public education... Koch, Dinkins, Guiliani.
DH and I were just talking about this this morning. NYC schools have only closed 6 times since 1978!
EXACTLY!
There were plenty of days that my mom kept me home from school, but school was OPEN!!!!!!!!!
As I wrote in one of the other threads:
Not to get all political, but I always believed that part of the reason they kept the city schools open was so that the children who receive free lunch have access to it. Also, so that any parents who needed to go to work were not leaving their children unattended if a sitter wasn't available.
THANK YOU!!!
this is getting ridiculous. so sad you need to take a day out of your bank. but there are kids and parents that rely on the schools for MEALS. for "day care". for everything.
even if 50% of teachers commute from a far distance, 100% of your students live in the city. and a large portion of the city is totally fine. roads are good. sure there are certain sections that got more snow, but then use your common sense (and annual leave) and stay home.
but don't be mad b/c you have to use a sick day.
ITA with this. There are people who need school for childcare (I said this above) and if they didn't have the childcare, they would have to take time off of work. Many people are even lucky enough to have sick or vacation time...they would have to give up a day's pay. There is SO much to consider when closing schools. People need to undrestand this!

Agreed, calling out sick, vacation time, working from home and getting paid for it are all luxuries for many working parents in NYC.

I think what makes us most upset is how he makes us feel like we are not important. How can you say stay off the roads, only use them if you have to but then say that schools are open? Many kids go on the bus. Special ed students are getting bussed from several towns away. Many teachers do not live nearby and come in from all over long island.
I do not think this snow storm necessarily warranted a day off (although it seems out east did get hit harder), but dont tell us to stay off the roads but keep school open!
This is what kills me!
I don't live near my job and still have to find a way in or use my personal time. Some people are lucky and have a work from home option which I don't, but it is what it is. I am not taking it personally though.
Teachers & parents have the choice to stay/keep their children home or not.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
I grew up in NYC. First of all I can remember only one day that schools closed for snow and that was the blizzard of 96 where the entire city shut down. Why should teachers get the day off when almost all others do not. This isn't at all about bloomberg, Its always been this way! If you can't get to work take a personal day just like everyone else has to.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
My issue isnt even as much as teachers getting to school, its bringing the children TO and FROM school. I am in Queens and its icy as anything here! I just watched the news..reporting that hardly any teachers OR STUDENTS showed up in public schools today. They had to combine ALL ages into 2 and 3 classes. Thats safer??? With one teacher in each room?? Even the parents being interviewed are saying that it was ridiculous to open. Stay off the roads, take mass transit, dont drive, blah blah blah..but by all means lets take our children out there. It makes NO SENSE. School isnt childcare..it's school. I dont know when it turned into a babysitting service. When I was growing up, thats not what school was about. When did it turn that way??

dh's cousin has 4 kids in his class!

I I am not looking for drama, it just seems that people use excuses like long commutes or children getting to school to cover the real reason of just not wanting to go to work. DW didn't want to go to work and was planning on working from home, but she saw that it wasn't that bad and we shoveled out and she went to work. It really isn't that bad out.
In Centereach there is a over a foot and a half of snow and the daycare center my children go to as well as all the districts surrounding my house are closed. Those are the "real" reasons I was not able to go to work today. My commute on a good day is 5 hours there and back. I'm sorry but I am not using my long commute as an excuse to not go to work to teach an empty classroom.
This morning my DH left when I was supposed to leave at 5:30am. He said that there were 3 cars blocking the ramp to get on to Nicholls road because they were stuck. Sounds pretty bad out to me.
I understand that some commutes stink and that its a pain to get to work when the weather is bad. If you can take a sick day or vacation day, great. I just have issues with teachers complaining about having to go to work when it snows. I know a lot of professions that still have to commute to work when the weather is bad.

always. it's always been that way. maybe not for you. but for many many many kids, it was either school or home alone. school lunch or NOTHING.
if it's too dangerous for you, by all means, don't go.
having the schools open takes nothing away from you, unless you count the sick day. your child gets marked as absent. fine. that is your choice.
closing the school takes choice and much needed services away from so many people. why? when many areas are ok and the choice is available.
like another poster said no one is ever going to be 100% happy. it's a tough job. I don't envy the position at all. and I am certainly not going to knock him for it.

maybe the kid would have been home alone if not for the school being open. is that also not a danger. not to mention, it's ILLEGAL to leave your child home alone. so what does this parent do....break the law or get fired in a time when jobs are few and far between.
maybe the parent doesn't have a city job with good benefits and would get FIRED for not coming it to work.
single parents, people who don't have leave to bank, or enough money.
I mean, the list continues. schools provide so much for so many.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
I just feel the city is contradicting itself.
On the news, during the press conferences, and in general everyone is saying that it is a snow emergency, not to leave your house unless you HAVE to, that cars and other vehicles are getting stuck, that the train isn't running on a normal schedule, that if you own a business please tell your employees to stay home, etc. They are also stating that everyone should stay off the roads so that emergency vehicles can plow and do their job.
Then, after all that, the NYC schools are open? It doesn't make any sense. You just said if you have a business to tell your people to stay home! I don't understand how we can have a declared emergency yet expect children and teachers to go in. Especially when so many commute from Suffolk where it is so bad, with so much snow.
At the time DH was leaving, our entire community was not plowed, and it was like blizzard conditions at the time - NO visibility. It looked like a nuclear winter! So, I just don't get it.

state of emergency is for FUNDING. to get the money to plow and all that OT the city pays out.
and his urging for businesses to close and the opening of schools run in tandem.
you think the owners of these business have leave banks for their employees? most don't.
please remember there are POOR people that live and work in NYC. and that rely very heavily on the services the city provides them.

Yes but he DOES contradict himself! Don't drive. Don't go out if you don't have to. He said that last night. The morning commute will be horrible. Stay in if you don't have to leave your home. Ok..but let's send our children to school on icy roads. Because of course, adults should stay home if we can but kids should be commuting to school. It makes NO SENSE!!!
And I live in a neighborhood where I see LITTLE kids go to school ALL BY THEMSELVES each and every day. Thats safer??? And honestly, with the attendence numbers today..most stayed home..so overall, they were left alone anyway!
He just conradicts himself WAY TOO MUCH!

Yes, unforunately this is the case.
I'm a salaried employee, and company policy clearly states that I can not use a sick day if I don't come in to work because of snow. I must use a vacation day, and if I don't have any vacation days left, then I take the day unpaid.
Also, many companies frown upon taking sick days to stay home with your child, whether the child is sick or not. Sick days are for when the employee is sick, not when your kid is sick. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm just stating how it is at many companies.

ITA. My nanny got from Queens to my house via car with no problems and I made it from Nassau to NYC via train with no problems. Looking around here, it appears so did everyone else in my office from a wide variety of NYC boroughs/suburbs. There just wasnt enough snow to warrant closing NYC schools given the significant impact closing has on so many families. If you live in a hard hit area and dont feel comfortable going out in it, you have to do what you have to do but that's with most jobs.

Further, obviously, not everyone works for a company. With HR, employee handbooks, sick days, etc. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to "call in" somewhere and take a day that they may be entitled to.
