does anyone know how long they tested this product. I just always fear that 20 years fm now they'll link it to some disease
This is exactly what I was saying too! It is FDA approved but I am still skeptical

This drug has been around for a while. This is just an over the counter version of Xenical. Alli is a half dose of Xenical. I think Xenical was released publicly, by 'prescription only' in 1999.

my first weigh in.....lost 4 lbs
Congrats.
I think I lost about 6. I'm over the weight limit on my scale so I don't really know how accurate it is. I didn't get on there until the middle of the week, and this morning I'm 4 pounds lighter than what I was on Thursday.... so I *think* I lost 4 pounds plus whatever I would have lost on Mon-Thurs. I guesstimate 6!

How much overweight do you need to be to take this? Is there a recommendation?

Re: Official Alli Thread
There is a chart on the back of the package that tells you if you are a certain height and the given weight or more, you can take it.

Here is a link on the Alli website. It's probably the same one on the back of the packaging that Bri mentions.

This is the part that bothers me the most...from the Alli website:
"If you stop using alli, continue with a diet and exercise program to help you reach your goal. You may start to regain weight after you stop taking alli. In order to maintain your weight loss, you may need to continue taking alli along with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet."
Aside from the fact that is you are malabsorbing fats you are guarenteed to be malabsorbing essential vitamins and minerals from your food as well.
Just be careful everyone

Re: Official Alli Thread
I think that makes sense, the part about regaining or needing to keep taking it. I mean if its speeding up your weight loss and you are at a point where with diet alone you wouldn't lose anything, but you are because of the pill, then you stop the pill you should either even out or gain.
You know the idea being that as you weight less you need less calories to maintain your weight (not considering working out).
So if you went off the pill you'd need to be stricter about your diet to make up for the 25% of fat it was blocking.
Anyway, the side effects still scare me...
Do you need to take it continuously to work, or could someone take it only on weekends for example?

Stop the Insanity! I am reading this book "Intuitive Eating". It has changed my whole outlook on dieting.
edit: I just read the weight chart. I'm too skinny!

From what I read, it stays in your system for 3 or 4 hours. So in theory I guess you could take it only on weekends. But, the question then becomes is it worth it for just the amount of fat that you'd block over the weekend?
You would of course need to follow the same diet you do on the weekends during the week, in case on Monday you'd just eat back everything that was blocked!

Re: Official Alli Thread
I spoke to my friend who is a doctor where I work and he said that ALLI is totoallyu safe and actually referred to it as a placebo. He said it is almost a deterant to over-eat because of the effect the meds has on your system, in conunction with ftoo much fat. he said it is cheaper to just cut down on calories, but for those who need resitriction and guidance thisis the perfect option.

As long as you count the calories, no. This is a calorie and fat counting diet.

Almost a deterrant? It's a DEFINITE deterrant!
I don't agree that it is only a placebo, though. Although I've had no treatment effects in my 2 weeks on the medication, I still have lost 13 pounds. I don't think I would have lost that much weight that quickly with calorie and fat counting alone. If that was the case, it would basically be WW, and in times that I've done WW previously I've never had those major results 2 weeks in a row. (Usually on WW I found that the first week is usually a good 4 or 5 pounds, and then the second week is only a pound or two.)
I'm sure that the calorie/fat restrictions I'm following has caused some of the loss, but using Alli has increased my results.

So people who are on it...What do you eat on a typical day? I think I am buying this tomorrow...I cannot take my weight anymore and I feel my metabolism is slowing down
I want to be sure about what to eat and what not to eat.
Thanks everyone

I am interested to hear about this too. I'm in the same place - I really am unhappy with my weight and I need a kickstart. Thanks!

Re: Official Alli Thread
so basically it forces you to eat low fat or right so you don't get cramps and diahrrea? That is a deterrent for sure. I think most people would be ultra strict with their diet just to avoid that.
I can't take the pill. I have belly issues to begin with. I can't take the risk.
eta: I just read this off the website: You may feel an urgent need to go to the bathroom. Until you have a sense of any treatment effects, it's probably a smart idea to wear dark pants, and bring a change of clothes with you to work
Are you kidding! I may poop in my pants!

So people who are on it...What do you eat on a typical day?
It's a typical low fat, reduced calorie diet. For your 3 main meals you can have up to 15 grams of fat per meal. Your calorie restriction is dependent upon your current weight and exercise level; in a booklet in the starter pack it will give you a chart to look at to see how many calories.
Just to give you a gauge of what 15 grams of fat is - it's one tablespoon of olive oil - it's one pat of butter. On the good side, its a fair piece of meat, it's a lot of salad and veggies. So you are going to be giving up butter, oil, etc. You can't 'save' fat grams and eat them at another point - there is no banking like there is in WW. They found thru tests that 15 grams is the cutoff where people start getting sick. So you can't save 10 fat grams from lunch, and have 25 fat grams for dinner - you will get sick from it.
For my typical day... I'm not a big breakfast eater so I'll have one of those quaker oats bars, and for a mid morning snack I'll have a piece of fruit. For lunch I'll have a lean cuisine type meal, and a 100 calorie snack pack of some type. Dinner is usually a salad with a low fat/fat free dressing, a piece of protein (steak/pork/chicken) and a veggie. Sometimes we'll skip the salad and have a potato in addition to our veggie side. Then at night, depending upon how many calories I've eaten during the day, my snack could be either a fat free pudding, fat free string cheese, fat free pretzels, etc. Sometimes our dinner is so filling and large that I don't even have a snack.
Making some recipe substitutions and modifications we haven't had a problem making dinners. The Pam spray has taken the place of oil and the "I cant believe its not butter" fat free spray is the butter replacement. I've found some chinese-like recipies on here that take away my chinese cravings, some fat free quesadillas to take away my mexican cravings, I just need to figure out how to make a low fat sensible slice of pizza.
So as I said before, its a typical reduced calorie low fat diet. The Alli pill seems to increase the speed of the loss, and of course keeps you on track because you know that cheating will put you in a bad place...
Good luck.

Re: Official Alli Thread
okay - i bought it last night and read the info that comes in the starter kit on my metro ride in this morning. i think the diet seems really healthy and varied. i am going to wait to start until sunday bc i have a bachelorette party and bridal shower to go to saturday and i don't think it's the best time to be starting. So, sunday it is! I'll keep everybody posted.
Also - fyi - the GNC near me (I live in DC) has Alli on sale right now for anyone who is interested in either starting or buying more.
