I can see if they want to add a lot of cream and don't want to lose coffee, but I still don't think it's okay. They should either have a policy they won't do it, or give her a grande in a grande cup and then give her an extra venti cup she can pour it into.

Huh?? I am confused. Wasting an extra cup is okay but asking for a smaller amount of coffee in a larger cup is not?

I see nothing wrong wih ordering a smaller size and asking for a larger cup. No coffee or cup is wasted.

Re: Ok or not - Starbucks - asking for a grande coffee in a venti cup?

I think people are very particular about their coffee and for the prices that SB charges, if a person wants a tall in a grande or a grande in a venti cup, then so be it. SB should accommodate those customers.

I really think it's a stretch to call somebody gross because they made a special request for very expensive coffee in an establishment that prides itself on customer service and satisfaction. You should watch the documentary on Starbucks. (I think it's on MSNBC or one of those finance channels.) Very interesting.

On another SB note, my sis ordered a grande cappuccino the other day and when she got into her car, she realized it was only half full. She was in a rush and didn't go back to say anything. That, if anything, is what I think is gross. Charging the customer full price for half a product. (Though I'm sure it was a simple mistake on the barrista's part.)

I don't really care what other people want to do but I don't think complaining makes any sense in this scenarios. She did want a smaller szie coffee...Chat Icon

I only said this b/c people said the baristas might not be able to judge a grande size in a venti cup. I don't think it's wrong to ask, I think it's wrong the woman complained about not getting enough coffee.

The reason people do this is they pay for less.

Basically, you get a small drink in a big cup. You pay for the Latte, lets say 2.00 for the small in the big cup.

If you got a big in a big cup its $3.00.

So they get the small, and go to the mile bar and fill it with "free" milk.

Its a way to pay less and get more.

Gross.

Actually - I am WAY grosser because I get free SOY milk added to the top. Which is more expensive. Chat Icon

This is very easily resolved by simply saying "leave room for milk".

How is the barista supposed to know how much "tall" coffee goes in a "grande" cup? And if they stand there figuring it out, then ppl will complain they take too long.

Because I don't want room for milk. I want a ginormous amount of milk - and that doesn't sound quite as hip at the counter Chat Icon

I thought I was creative for asking it this way - and it solved all of my problems.

Thankfully, my life has been so awesome that the only problem I ever had to face was coffee to milk ratio at Starbucks.Chat Icon

Re: Ok or not - Starbucks - asking for a grande coffee in a venti cup?

Well, I don't see at all why it should be an issue-it seems (and I had to look it up becuase I get completely confused by their fancy cup size names) that she ordered and paid for a medium size coffee and simply asked for it to be poured into a large size cup. Nothing wrong with that...

Actually, i think its a great idea: I always have to pour coffee out, and that's after I ask not to pour it all the way to the top. I like to add a lot of milk to my coffee (and not only because it's free Chat Icon, I do the same thing at home) and I hate waisting coffee!!

Hmm, I think I will do the same next time...

Not always. My mom orders a grande, gets a grande, but has to dump a 1/4 of it out b/c she likes half and half. If she had a grande size in a bigger cup, she wouldn't have to, but like I said above, I can see problems arising so they either shouldn't do it, or offer an extra empty cup.

I agree with this. I can't stomach an entire thing of coffee - it has to be half coffee and half milk otherwise the coffee is too much for me. I always get the coffee - and pour 1/2 of it out and add in the milk. Everyone always teases me that I'm throwing out 1/2 of what I paid for! I never thought of this so now I'm glad I read this thread. So I guess I'm GROSS Chat Icon

hands down....

I cannot for the life of me fathom how this got to two pages on people actually debating this and giving a sh!t whether its "wrong" or "gross" to put coffee in a larger cup. It never ceases to amaze me the inconsequential things people on this board get all riled up over. This takes the cake though.

This happens to me ALL the time ...

I have now started to ask for "no foam" and that seems to solve the problem most of the time...For the amount of cash I have given Starbucks, I should have my name on the sign Chat Icon

Somehow I had a feeling this topic would be interesting. I was truly intrigued about the question. I never heard of anyone doing this. After reading the responses, I am surprised they give the larger cup for the cost of the smaller beverage.I would think the cost of large amount of milk should be paid for. Meaning if you don't take a venti FULL of coffee, then you are taking a venti full of something (milk)that costs $ as well and you would be required to pay for that.

My original question wasn't so much about the cost, but about that the woman had the nerve to complain. I don't get how a barista is supposed to know exactly where a grande serving is in a venti cup.

Now, that makes sense-never thought about it like that.

BUT-they always over fill unless I ask for a small drink in a large cup (no matter how many times/ways I ask them to leave a lot of room) and I will have to dump out coffee.

Isn't it up to the store (managers, etc.) to judge and decide and not US?

If they are fine with people doing this then who cares?!?!
