I have seen a woman add milk to her coffee, then proceed to refill her kid's sippy cup with milk too. How's that for "free milk", lol? Hi!

I wouldn't call it gross... but sorry I think it's being really cheap.
And I actually tried this a few times. Asked for my iced grande coffee in a Venti cup so I can add the milk. I even though to myself that I was just being cheap. Couldn't bring myself to do it anymore.
The easiest way to fix this would be for SBUX to charge you based on the cup size asked for. After all, you are filling it to the top when you leave (whether it be with milk, ice, whatever). And the milk actually costs the SBUX more per ounce than the coffee! But they won't do this because they are so high strung on "keeping the customer experience positive" they would never dare.
Still think it's cheap. And for anyone who thinks it's OK because their barista said so, try going on any of the barista or employee user based forums where the barista's can post anonymously their thoughts on this topic. They will say you are cheap too!
I don't understand, how is this being cheap? I am getting a "tall" amount of coffee and paying for "tall" amount of coffee. Why would I pay for a "grande" amount of coffee if I only wanted and received a "tall" amount of coffee?
Because unless you planned on drinking the coffee black, you are essentially filling your drink up to the Venti size.
If you bought that coffee anywhere else (Dunkin, 7-11, etc.) if you ask for a large coffee light, you are paying for a large.
Sorry... I think it's being cheap. You could also ask for a Venti and specifically tell them leave room for milk. But it's cheaper to ask for the larger cup, so I guess that is the preferred way.
This is not the only way people can get "more" than what they pay for. They even coined terms for some of these "ghetto" drinks. Ghetto latte!!!!

Huh? I don't get why it's a big deal. It's a $3 cup of coffee, the milk is there for a reason.
I go to Starbucks daily, I get a NF chai tea latte and never add milk. Whoever wants my share of the "free milk" have at it.... Pour it in your coffee, your children's sippy cups, go wild with it. You have my permission.

If its 'cheap'...then that's fine with me, because they charge a heck of a lot just for some coffee.
I personally don't do this but that's mostly because I don't frequent SB due to what I consider to be ridiculous prices.

This is very easily resolved by simply saying "leave room for milk".
How is the barista supposed to know how much "tall" coffee goes in a "grande" cup? And if they stand there figuring it out, then ppl will complain they take too long.
There have been times were I had this happen. IMO no matter what Starbucks that you go to and say "Leave room for milk" they never do...least in my experiences!
I see no problem asking for a grande coffee in a venti cup at all. DH doe this all the time because as I mentioned no matter what Starbucks we go to, they still fill it all the way up even if we ask them to leave plenty of room for milk.
IMO it's a waste to have to dump out all that coffee just to get the amount of milk or cream you do want in your coffee.
But I think it's wrong if you do give free milk to the kid that has the sippy cup..now that's just not right!

Bc you are paying for a coffee that is smaller than the coffee you wind up walking out the door with. Paying for a grande but walking out with a venti once you add cream, milk, etc.

I have ordered a tall coffee in a grande cup every day for a year at least. It's fine, they don't mind at all - they only fill it up enough to the "tall" amount. I never complain because that is what I WANT. I add a lot of cream and I hate having it spill over so I have to dump and waste coffee. If I ordered and paid for a grande, then dumped out a bunch, I'd be paying for a grande and getting a tall, KWIM?
I'm with you...I do this regularly. They put too much coffee in to accomodate the amount of milk I add. It is strong coffee! They never have a problem when I ask and I could care less if anyone thinks it's wrong. It's better than dumping coffee
It is strong coffee so I see why people would do this. I just always find that the place by me fills the cup up too much and I spill it on myself so I'd order a smaller coffee in a larger cup.

I don't drink coffee but love SB hot chocolate. I always ask for extra whipped cream so one of the workers finally told me to ask for a Grande in a Venti cup and fill the rest with whipped cream.

True its not cheap but if its too expensive for someone, they can choose to buy coffee elsewhere. The cost of it doesnt justify paying for a cheaper coffee and walking out with a larger one. There are plenty of people who just buy the correct size and make the accodations for the milk they want to put in. And those people pay for the grande and walk out with a grande, etc, not walk out with "more" than they paid for. I am very surprised Starbucks goes for this.
I had never heard of anyone doing this until the woman did it the other day when I was there. I was very surpriised to see you could even order it this way for the reasons above.

I guess the workers are sort of ok with this. I wonder how the top mgmt at Starbucks feels about this, giving out larger cups that people can fill up and in a sense walk out with more than they paid for (if you add milk and make it a now larger beverage).

you can order it this way because its legal, and as a customer the customer is always right in the service industry.

No wonder the baristas seemed so annoyed at the woman. It must be annoying to feel a customer is trying to get something for cheaper than they should be paying for. Esp in this case. The woman then complained they put TOO little in. That was what struck me as wrong.
eta- I dont even care, I have no vested interest! For some reason it just struck me and I figured other LIFers might find it as interesting a topic as I did.

Re: Ok or not - Starbucks - asking for a grande coffee in a venti cup?
I'm surprised they would allow this as most food places using cup counts to figure out sales. I know 7-11 used to use BigGulp cup sizes to measure sales.
Using a venti cup but charging for a another size could mess up the books.
Anyway, if you ask for a Grande in a Venti cup you should be prepared to only get 16 ounces and not 20.

Re: Ok or not - Starbucks - asking for a grande coffee in a venti cup?
I love this thread. and
anyone who pays for Starbucks coffee is off the bat, not cheap.
tasteless, but not cheap.
starbucks if laughing at the thread too...all the way to the bank!
ETA: the woman was an *** for complaining about the amount.
people used to do this in Haagen Dasz all the time. ask for a one scoop cup, then tell me it was too small.
I would ask them if they'd like it measured, but to be aware that if it went over 4oz (the official size of a small) I'd have to take some off.
it usually shut them up.

I also used to always pour so much of the coffee out even after asking them to leave room for milk that the barista's recommend that I orderr a tall in a grande cup.
This thread reminds me of what happened to me the other day: I took my kids out for a slice of pizza. I asked the guy at the counter to slice it in 3rds. The cashier wanted to charge me for 3 slices of pizza.

I disagree, because the person paying for a venti is getting more coffee. If they choose to pour some of it out, that is their prerogative.
I don't even like Starbucks, I'm a DD person. I wish I did, though. Their ambiance is much better than DD's. There is nothing about DD that makes one want to sit and hang out.

So when you are at Dunkin Donuts and ask for a large hot or iced coffee... REAL light... make sure you ask for a 25-50% refund on your coffee. Take it a step further and ask for another 15% off for the ice. Water is free right?
After all only a portion of your drink is coffee.... right? That's using the same logic.

Re: Ok or not - Starbucks - asking for a grande coffee in a venti cup?
as long as the starbucks pour is the SAME AMOUNT, it doesn't matter what vessel it comes in.
if STarbucks cared, they would ASK if you wanted milk.
they base their prices on the amount of COFFEE they are putting in each cup.
it doesn't matter to them if you dump out 2 oz to make room for milk. they already got that covered.
so whether it goes in a larger cup OR goes in their garbage can, it matters not to them. they are charging you for 12 oz of COFFEE (and milk and cream and sugar are already built in there too)
the only people who seem to care are the people on this thread.

Re: Ok or not - Starbucks - asking for a grande coffee in a venti cup?
I've been reading this thread since yesterday, and the strong opinions are so interesting. I rarely drink Starbucks, and it doesn't affect me one way or another if their policy is to allow customers to get their drink in a larger cup size.
My personal opinion is that if you want a large drink of anything (coffee, soda, juice, etc.), you should order that size cup. How you prepare your drink is your choice. My DH typically gets sodas without ice so that he gets more soda in the cup, but he would never think of asking for a larger size so that he can add ice to it and still have the same amount of soda.
However, Starbucks policies are their policies, and if their corporate office doesn't have a problem with it, then why should anyone else?
I do think that the customer in the OP was wrong to then complain that there wasn't enough in the cup.
