ok...spin-off on controversial questions.
Are you100% without a doubt against the death penalty no matter what or are there exceptions?
I could never serve on a jury where the death penalty could be a verdict because #1--mistakes are made all the tiime...and I do not want to be a partof it... #2--I feel only God should decide who lives or dies...
then I becomea hypocrite... if it Godforbid involved my kids..I think I would want to pull the switch or do them in...

Re: ok...spin-off on controversial questions.
I can't with absolute certainty say that I am for or against it. it really depends.
Tim McVeigh absolutely deserved to die IMO!
but at the same time, I also don't think I could ever serve on a jury where capital punishment was being sought.

Re: ok...spin-off on controversial questions.
I think that although there are times that I feel some people should die for their crimes, I have heard too many stories of people who were in jail for things they did not do and 30 years later were let out because of DNA evidence.
So, because of that, I think I am now against the death penalty. I can't imagine innocent people being put to death for crimes they did not commit. (which may in turn cause some people to ask me how I can be pro-choice)
The risk of mistake is too great in my mind. Put them in jail for the rest of their lives.

Re: ok...spin-off on controversial questions.
i'm reading change of heart by jodi piccoult right now and just started it. within the first few pages there was a line that pertains to this as it is about a murder. it states " the state is asking you to wrap up this case-one that involves the death of two people-by taking the life of a third person."
that statement made sense to me and in all honesty i believe the person should be made to suffer for life in jail. why make it easier on the person by ending their misery. if there is no chance of parole than i am not for capital punishment.

Yes, it would absolutely bother me that they live better in jail than some people who are not in jail.
But for me, the thing that troubles me more is knowing 100% that the people who are being put to death are absolutely the people responsible for the crime. If there is even a chance that they may have the wrong person, I can't be for the death penalty. Unfortunately I don't have the choice to say that if they know for sure, then I am for the death penalty, and if there is a question then I am against it. Just like my post earlier about abortion, you have to pick a side.
It breaks my heart to hear the news stories about people who were in jail their whole lives, then get out at 70 because they were wrongly accused and convicted. I could not live with myself if I was a part of a trial where someone was put to death and later found out they were not guilty.

Re: ok...spin-off on controversial questions.
I do not believe in the death penalty. There have been some cases that made me question my belief, but I still think its wrong. Its a very flawed system. There have been inmates released from death row after new evidence emerged and I think that alone should make us abolish the death penalty.

Re: ok...spin-off on controversial questions.
I am completely against the death penalty. Not for religious or moral reasons, but because it will never be implemented fairly. Our legal system is far from perfect and has a lot of bias. The rich will be able to buy their way out of a death penalty but the poor can not. So two men who commit the exact same crime will get very different sentences. And that's not right.
I also don't think it works as a deterrent. Most people capable of taking multiple lives don't value their own all that much. Unless they are mentally ill, in which case the death penalty won't apply to them anyway.
A death sentence also costs much more than leaving a man in jail for the rest of his life. So it may bother you that money is spent feeding and housing a man for the rest of his life, but you'd pay significantly more to see him die. I life sentence isn't exactly a picnic either. Personally I'd rather be dead than in jail forever.

I think it should be saved for the worst of the worse.
Do I think it's right for the Hannibal Lectors of the country to sit in an extrememly high security cell? Noooooo, don't let them sit at all!

I don't see any reason for the death penatly.
We are against killing, so we will kill you because of it?
i think prison life is more punishing than death....

agreed!
as far as the death penalty goes, for me, i'm usually 100% for it but like what has been said above there are always exceptions to cases... but most of the time i am completely for it.
someone like scott peterson for example, should be put to death, IMO.

Re: ok...spin-off on controversial questions.
I think for certain crimes I am totally FOR it. For example...the Laci Peterson trial. I think her dh, who killed her, should have definitely had the death penalty.
If someone (God forbid) took my child and did something awful, I wouldn't want him to live in prison forever. He took the live of my child and I would want his taken too.

I cant say either way.. i always kid around saying the law should be an eye for an eye... but i think what if i got accused of doing something i didnt do. Its a scarey thought that your life could be taken away for something you never did.

Re: ok...spin-off on controversial questions.
i am 100% for the death penalty if the crime is severe enough. i think it should be reserved for the most serious cases and should be implemented within a short amount of time. none of this 20 years on death row nonsense

Re: ok...spin-off on controversial questions.
I'm all for the death penalty and quite frankly think we need to start actually using it. Our jails are overpopulated and people are being let out and committing the same crimes over and over again b/c they think our penal system is a joke. If we instill stricter punishments and start using the death penalty, maybe people will think twice before getting out of jail and trying to kill someone else.
Unfortunately, there have been many cases where people have been inprisoned for years when they were actually innocent. Luckily we have been developing new ways to make sure this no longer happen...but nothing is ever perfect.
I feel the most severe of crimes deserve the death penalty. It is ridiculous that we let murderers waste our tax dollars sitting in jails when there are good people on the streets that can't afford food or a roof over their heads.

Re: ok...spin-off on controversial questions.
Posted by SweetestOfPeas Tim McVeigh absolutely deserved to die IMO!
I totally agree about McVeigh!!
However, for the most part, I guess I would have to say I am against the death penalty.....2 reasons.....
1. I had a professor in law school who was active in some anti-death penalty work. I read some of his writings and he did convince me that the death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment, and as such, unconstitutional.
2. As a Marty Tankleff supporter, I now think about the wrongfully accused and what may have happened if the death penalty were available in Marty's case or in the cases of some other defendants. One example is Jeffrey Deskovic, who was coerced to confess to a rape and murder he did not commit. Deskovic was in jail for 16 years and later freed on DNA evidence.
So, I am not sure how I can match up my general feelings on the death penalty with my feelings about someone like McVeigh.

I'm for it. If you murder my mom or dad or someone else's for that matter, you don't deserve to live. I also support putting someone to death who rapes a child.

Is this a direct response to my post, about 2 specific cases or are you just answering the OP's question?

I am against it.
If something happened to one of my loved ones, I might feel differently emotionally (although I actually don't think I would), but life and death decisions should be made when one is in that kind of state.
