Overheard at the Sprinkler Park today...

Yeah, yeah - here we go again! Flame me if you want, it just made me sad.

A mom (I presumed) saying to her daughter (maybe 5-6 years old?), "What's your grievance?" I think what saddened me more than the words, although I think they were obnoxious, was her tone - she said it in such a nasty, sarcastic fashion - the way you would hear an adult saying it while fighting with another adult, not to a child. It made me sad.

Re: Overheard at the Sprinkler Park today...

While I don't think a 5 year old understands the word grievance. . . I don't think there is anything wrong with this either? Unfortunately we all have bad days and none of us are 100% perfect. Maybe her child was trying her that day and she was at the end of her rope. Maybe something else happened. If you don't know the circumstances, you can't really ever judge.

awww...I hate hearing kids get "spoken" too. even if it's deserved (though it sounds like it wasn't) it just makes ms sad!

maybe the mom was just having a rough day or the child was really misbehaving. I can lose my cool with my DD at times.

I actually like that she is expanding her DD's vocabulary-though I could do without the sarcasm.

Tone is everything. I can't stand when people are nasty or just 'bark' at their kids. There are a bunch of teachers & even subs at my school that do this. Irks me, just not my style.

I'm not judging, I swearChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Overheard at the Sprinkler Park today...

I honestly think these "I overheard" posts are getting to be too much....

Things we learn as kids:

Never ASSume
Dont judge others
Mind your own business
Until you've walked a day in their shoes
You dont know what goes on behind closed doors...etc.

This posts are now making me wonder if I should just sit in the house with my kids in fear someone is going to post a thread that they just saw me leave mcdonalds and I bought my kids not only a happy meal BUT the 3 for 1 cookies or they just overheard me ask my 8 year old and 5 year old during another one of their fighting/tattling episodes "whats the situation"?

Re: Overheard at the Sprinkler Park today...

I don't really see the big deal. I may not use the word "grievance" but I do say to my kids "what's your problem" when I am frustrated and having a bad day.. is there really a parent who hasn't?

Ditto.
I alway say to DD- what is your issue?
But I am going to use grievance from now on.
It sounds much more intellectual!
