i don't want to stir up anything, but doesn't BIRACIAL mean having parents of TWO different races? Chat Icon

if your bio father is aa/white, and your mom is white, wouldn't that mean you're 1/4 AA? Chat Icon

i'm just trying to understand

yes, i think you're right. i suppose a better term would be 'multiracial'.

Re: Palin: does anyone else believe this?

really this is what i am scared of.... the fights.

he maybe part black and part white but to help stop the black white problems .... shouldn't we just refer to him as the President and not the first black President.....

who REALLY CARES what color he is! he lives the same life everyone else does. and i am so tired of hearing it. this is 2008 TIME TO TAKE THE WORDS out of our vocab. and learn yes we have a man of a darker color in the office now and guess what there is not a thing you can do about it.

JUST MAYBE he will be the one to say "guess what, i am not aa nor am i white, i am OBAMA! i am just a person just like you. we all bleed red, we all get up and put one leg in our pants at one leg at a time now can we get on with the real matters at hand"

I can believe it cause I think she is a moron and this is from what I've seen of her not the media. But at this point who cares, I am just glad she isnt going to be my VP.

I'm not an "AA", but I am Hispanic, and a minority. Sorry, but it seems like you go out of your way to look for racist innuendos when there werent any intended in most instances. Is there a reason why?

past experience - has nothing to do with going out of my way - she has a history of making similar statements - i happen to call her out on them...so much so, that she made up a special name for me...Chat Icon

and really, you're pretty new around here (or are you?) - stick around....you'll get more show than you bargained for

be sure to stock up on Chat Icon

so she's branded for life, then? is that how it is? is it so hard to admit you were wrong (in THIS instance- not sure about any others) and move on?

and yes, i AM new, or did you think that i'm one of those regular posters that use a different profile for drama????

because in THIS instance I don't feel like I am wrong -- so why would I admit to that????? it's all about how things are interpreted - you say patAYto, I say paTAHto.

as far as using a different profile for drama - that's possible - it's been done before. you say you're new, then welcome aboard.

i don't get how that compares to Obama Chat Icon (not being snarky -- being honest)

because it is about blood lines not skin color, that is why I get furious when Obama calls himself AA. There are a lot of bi-racial children who feel like they dont have a place to fit in to and if Obama started referring to himself as bi-racial, I think that would do more wonders than calling himself AA. That is my opinion

It is well knows that children of separate race parents "sometimes" need a sense of belonging with either peers on each race. They tend to sway in one direction. Which ever they feel they belong more. Obama is darker skin so most people would call him AA because of his color. That being said, he has a lot of white features. Yet, his "overall" look is AA. So most of the population (AA included) would call him AA.

I grew up were "true" AA (aka people born in Africa) are not always agreeing that a bi-racial person is an AA because they have white in them. White people think they are AA, AA think there are not really fully AA.

Ouch, I read this like 5xs and it made my head hurt, lol.

I guess it all depends on what YOU truly feel you "are" or "arent", not others.

Like Deedlebug said, you cannot judge a book by its cover. (I'm not saying YOU are judging, just in general!)

Like, when people see me, they automatically think I am Irish because of my coloring. What they dont know, is that I am fluent in Spanish and understand what Rubia is, lol.

African Americans

Thanks! I was wondering where that was going.

i'd LOVE to know how the AA's on this site would interpret that statement.

but what do i know!?

I'm an AA, and I have a couple of comments.. I'll drop off..

1. deedlebug, as a woman who is 100% AA, to a woman who is 1/4 AA and looks caucasian, I wouldn't consider you bi-racial. most AA's wouldn't consider you to be AA..

2. Obama identifies with AA's because the world SEES HIM as an AA.. When he walks into a room, no one says oh wow.. there goes a guy who is half Kenyan and half caucasian american.. They say.. Oh look.. there goes another black man (well not anymore..Chat Icon )

3. On the 'drink the kool aid' comment.. It's often taken out of context.. Someone mentioned the true history of the term, and anyone with knowledge of that information will not think of it as a racist term.. I belong to a board of Black women and this same conversation came up and there were many who felt that the term was racist but it's not. Sometimes people try to make more of something than it is..

4. The Palin problem is the result of the RNC's doing. She didn't choose herself.. THEY chose her.. and they used her to suit their needs. They knew that lady wasn't ready nor prepared, but they put her in the spotlight without even really knowing who SHE is.. and it backfired.. she was able to fire up the base but then at the same time she also incited a little rage and anger.. and she embarassed the party. .and now that it's time to start sending out resumes and senior aides are trying to Save their own asses, everyone wants to throw her under hte bus.
That is WRONG..

She didn't just turn up Stupid on Wednesday.. she was a dingbat back in August.. but they pushed her out there to the world and put her family on display, and created havoc in her family life, lost her privacy and then when things started to go sour they looked at her and said 'it's YOUR fault"..no.. it's not.. she was a pawn, an she got used.. and i could go on and on about that because as much as i couldn't stand the dingbat.. lol. right is right and wrong is wrong and what they are doing is WRONG..

5. Yes I believe based on her lack of knowledge and the interviews she gave that she didn't know what NAFTA was, and she didn't know Africa was a continent, and other little silly things.. I believe it all.

Re: Palin: does anyone else believe this?

I think she wasn't knowledgeable enough to be VP. .
.
It is sad that McCain picked her, because I really do believe that she lost him a lot of voters. Several people I have spoken to would have voted for McCain if he had had a more moderate VP pick.

Sure, she inspired the conservative base, but they would have voted Republican anyway IMO.

I agree with you that most people would view him as AA, not not half kenyan and half caucasian...
but i would NEVER, EVER say...
"there goes another black man"

that-to me, is racist.

i think my meaning in that statment might have been misconstrued.. I meant that to say that when walking into a room, he wouldn't stand out apart from anotehr black man who also walked into the room.. not that anyone would reduce him to just being a 'black man'.

sorry.
