and what is the difference if its credit or debit?

how does it matter the payment of choice?

i for one rarly carry cash on me.

if i have to go to cvs and buy a pack of gum...guess how i'm gonna pay?

why the argument?

Jus tasking a simple question.

I saw a young girl use a credit card to pay for her maincuare today.

Then I wathced her pull a $5 dollar bill out of her wallet for the tip.

My point was, if you really don't have $6 bucks for a manicure, don't get one.

Maybe she doesn't carry cash. I use my credit card for everything. I never have cash.
Why would you assume she doesn't have money for her manicure?

She pulled out a $5 for the tip.

This really went off topic here. I was just lookiing to see if it was a god idea or a bad idea. Not a "do you do this" type of thread.

On a debit card, ok - I would feel kind of silly but it's still ok.

On a credit card, no way. With the interest compounding unless I pay it off right away, it turns into a $30 manicure!

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?

How do you know she was using a CC and not a Debit card?

Maybe she is building credit? Maybe all she had was $5 on her.

I mean cmon, who cares really? But those are my questions...

And my answer would be yes I would, but I dont have any credit cards. But I use my debit card for 99% of the things I buy. And I cant think that anyone would know which it was ?

Sure. Why not? I've done it. If someplace accepts a card, I use it!

ATM fees are through the roof! The BOA near my house charges $3 a transaction, so I'll use my card over anything.

And why do you assume she didn't have the money for it? Because she pulled out a $5? I don't get the logic...I would just think that is a very generous tip!!

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?

I usually only carry about $25 if that in cash on me. I hate carrying cash and hardly ever do.

I use my cc to pay for almost everything including my mani/pedi even though I use cash to tip. I get points for each purchase and pay it off full each month so dont think it is a big deal. I've even bought coffee at DD for $3 on my cc Chat Icon

Good idea, builds up points on MANY credit cards.

Something to debate about, hardly.

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?

I think its pretty ridiculous. When i worked in the city everyone used credit cards to buy a cup of coffee - it was amazing that very few people carry cash on them.

Its just wierd to me - I don't use my credit card unless I make a large purchase and i always try to carry cash on me for small purchases like these - If I don't have the money on me - i don't buy it.

My bank has a sweepstakes right now where you can win money by using your debit as a Mastercard.

I've been 'charging' everything.

And I usually have the cash too. I only tip in cash.

I think it's the same with anything - as long as you have the $6 to pay the bill off at the end of the month, why does it matter how you pay really? I use credit for everything, even a gallon of milk because we get free miles and cash back on certain cards. I used to be an all cash girl before I married DH and he showed me the beauty of miles --- we got 2 GPS for free, and are always getting gift cards, got free round trip airfare for our honeymoon -- all for using our CC's on everyday purchases and paying them off responsibly at the end of the month...

I agree for a young teenager just learning about money that credit cards might be a dangerous habit to fall into, but we really don't know the situation in this case

I don't know her situation, but i don't think charging a manicure is a good habit to get into. That was my point.

And I think it was a good topic to discuss, not debate. Clearly there are different schools of thought on this topic.

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?

I rarely have cash on me and use my debit card for almost everything. Lots of manicure places get annoyed when you charge the tip and some of them won't even let you charge the tip portion.

I don't understand why you care so much about this? Who cares if she used a credit card for a $6 manicure. Maybe she didn't have enough cash on her and forgot to go to the ATM..? Just because you use a credit card doesn't mean you can't afford a manicure.

If you are someone that doesnt carry cash and pays your credit card in full every month - then sure

My sister charges everything because she gets points or sky miles or whatever and then pays the whole bill

Thats what we do. Everything goes on a card.

Also, I never carry cash.

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?

I don't think it matters in the slighetst to me. Have I done it? Don't think so. I always have cash on me and never get a manicure unless I have cash on me because I don't wanna hit an ATM, the place doesn't take cards, they don't have the line for the tip, etc...

I still don't understand your issue.

Is is that she used the credit card regardless of whether she could pay the bill or not?

OR

Is it the assumption she didn't have the money for a manicure and was charging it and would basically finance a manicure?

You original post was pretty unclear hence the debate since plenty of us use CC's for all our purchases.

I would charge it if I didn't have the cash. I never carry a balance over from month to month, so it wouldn't matter.

I don't think it matters. I have seen plenty of people pay with a cdredit/debit card at the salon.. I've done it too..
