Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?
Doesn't matter. Sometimes you don't have the cash. Sometimes you just want the points. I put a lot on credit and then pay it all down plus some (though my balances are far from zero). it helps me get points and hopefully gain credit history.
Or sometimes I don't have the $5 but I need to buy lunch and I can pass that expense on until I get another pay check.

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?
I NEVER have cash - its difficult for me to get to the ATM with a 2 year old. I use a card for everything! Even Starbucks! No Biggie. I don't see what the big deal is.
It could be a good idea (accumulate points, 0% card, pay off every month etc.) or it could be a bad idea (creating bad habits). Either way, I don't judge anyone else's financial decisions unless they impact me.

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?
I use my AMEX for everything and rarely carry more than $10 cash on me.
We pay our bills in FULL every month and have NO credit card debt. We just love to rack up the points so we can buy more goodies at Williams Sonoma and Brooks Brothers for just using our AMEX. I think what we do is pretty smart.
People shouldn't assume because one is using a credit card for a small amount of money that they don't have the money sitting in the bank waiting to pay the bill.

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?
i use the atm card as a credit card for everything because i spend more if i have cash on me. i also try not to charge tips because then the person has to claim it and i feel like they aren't getting what i really wanted to tip them. i usually have a small amount of cash on me if i know i'm going to have to tip. it was probably her mother's card and although its a bad habit to get into she probably does it all the time. as an adult i know the unfortunate habit of charging everything and that's why i use my debit card instead of a credit card.

I agree with this. And one step further, it's none of my business if they don't have the money to pay the bill in full each month.
I pay cash for most small purchases b/c it's nusiance for me to keep track of them and I tend to spend more that way.

I use a cc for ECERYTHING I can get away with using it for--because I get lots of cash back, and it adds up. But I have no balances on anything, and I never have--perfect credit. I have always lived well beneath my means, and it boggles my mind that anyone would equate cc usage w/ spending $$ that one does't have.

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?
Ive used my debit card for a lot of small purchases, including my nails.
here's what I think If she was so young that there was a question about her even having/using a cc, maybe it wasn't, maybe it was a debit card. Maybe it was mommy and daddy's and they tell her to use it, its easier then giving her cash all the time. Or maybe its even her own debit card.
I def. don't think its an odd thing. I probably wouldn't have even noticed her using it. I see most people pay by card at the salon I go to

the point I was getting at was if you really don't have $6 on you to get a manicuare, then don't get one.
why charge it?
Yes, you and me would pay it off right away.
But I think whipping out the card for every little thing is a bad idea and can get you into a lot of trouble.
I've been there, I know.
Well, i'm not here to agure.. its comes down to "Responsibility" and knowing what can happen..
While you think its a bad idea, some that pay there card off in full, monitor there transactions and they are happy...
I understand what you are saying but not everybody is responsible and think about how daily actions will effect them down the road..
This was my point. I really don't think she saw th ebig deal. And maybe it's not to some people, but I don't think I could charge $6 for a manicure. Gas or something I needed for my DD, absolutely, but my nails, never.
i was looking for ideas on this, just to see what others think.
Did I miss where you know that she used her charge card b/c she really couldn't afford it?
Honestly, I've used my CC for a manicure before and it wasn't because I couldn't afford it.

For me, i think using cash would be a poor financial choice b/c of all of the cash back and rewards points i get. I pay in full every month, so none of that $ gets wasted on finance charges. Why not make money while spending money?

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?
My dad's 2nd wife has 3 kids who are very irresponsible with money. So they've started adding their allowance money every week on a pre-paid credit card. Then my dad and his wife can monitor where they are spending and see where they are wasting a lot of their money. It's really helped the youngest, who is learning disabled. She has started saving a lot more now that she can see how much she was pizzing away at 7-11.

and what is the difference if its credit or debit?
how does it matter the payment of choice?
i for one rarly carry cash on me.
if i have to go to cvs and buy a pack of gum...guess how i'm gonna pay?
why the argument?
Jus tasking a simple question.
I saw a young girl use a credit card to pay for her maincuare today.
Then I wathced her pull a $5 dollar bill out of her wallet for the tip.
My point was, if you really don't have $6 bucks for a manicure, don't get one.
what?
how is paying with a CC not having the $ to pay for something...
i use my CC for EVERYTHING... rarly carry cash and HAVE paid for a mani with the CC and used the few $ in cash I had for a tip.. Ive also used my cc to pay for a coffee at DD...
I get toys r us credit for all my purchases... so when i use it i can buy toys for my kid... its a win-win.
and some people (like me) ARE responsible with their cards and pay them off in full etc etc.

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?
It's highly possible she only had $5 on her and gave that as tip. I hate charging tips but if its a $6 manicure...and I didnt have any cash on me then I would. I have done it once....and the minimum was $10 so I ended up including the tip on it.
Sometimes people are in a rush; maybe on their lunch hour and either dont have time to go to the cash machine OR they honestly didnt realize they didnt have the cash.
Either way, I see it as NO BIG DEAL. And your statement, if you dont have $6 cash, then dont get a manicure....sorry I dont agree w/ ya on that for the reasons stated above! LOL

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?
I'm thinking the "high-school" age girl (I just put it in quotes bc who knows, she could've been 22 for all we know... I"m 26 and people's jaws drop when I tell them that) was given mom's CC to pay for the mani and maybe mom told her she had to use her own $$ to pay the tip, hence the CC and cash combo.
Me... I NEVER have cash on me (well I do now esp. bc gas is cheaper with cash ) so I've definitely charged (whether it be credit or debit) a mani. I need a mani & pedi desperately now that you mention it!

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?
Yeah, I would pay for something that's $6 on my credit card. Just because you charge something doesn't mean that you can't afford it. Some people do still use credit cards responsibly. The only hesitation that I would have is feeling bad for the nail place because they have to pay the Amex fee on something that was only $6.

thank you Christine...What if she was having a bad day...a loved one died, she broke up with a boyfriend, had a fight with a friend? Maybe a $6 mani made her feel better. Why do we always have to look for the worst in people?
I charge small things and even have $60 in my wallet - sometimes I don't want to be w/o cash...or I want to make sure I have cash to buy gas (since this new charging more for CC at stations)...doesn't mean I don't have the money - this is just how I choose to manage my finances.
As for having a minimum charge...that's not allowed!
Visa merchants are not permitted to establish minimum transaction amounts, even on sale items. They also are not permitted to charge you a fee when you want to use your Visa card.
Another MasterCard acceptance rule prohibits merchants that accept MasterCard cards from establishing any minimum amount below which the merchant won’t accept payment via MasterCard card.

How do you know she didn't really have the $6? Maybe her mother promised to treat her to a mani, but had no cash, so just gave her the credit card and the $5 for the tip? My mother used to do things like that for me. Plus, my parents put EVERYTHING on their card and pay it off at the end of the month for the points.

whoa. I never thought this would take the turn it did.
It kind of surprised me to see someone charging a manicure. Just seems silly to me.
But I see that many people do it too.
Again, it took me by surprise and wanted to see what others thought.

Re: Paying for a $6 dollar maincure on a credit card?
Umm- maybe she had millions of dollars in the bank but didn't have cash on her. I for one NEVER carry cash and trust me- I can well afford a $6 manicure... I wonder if people judge me when I whip out the debit card and pay for my Taco Bell... Also- I don't carry credit card balances-I charge cause it's easier than carrying cash... and pay the bill in full when it comes. In this day and age there is no need to carry large amounts of cash- and it's not the safest thing in the world either....

My point was, if you really don't have $6 bucks for a manicure, don't get one.
That is such a blanket statement.
I've put $1.50 lunches on a credit card. Does that mean I don't have a dollar fifty?
I'll tell you why I do this. I have cards linked to 6% interest bearing checking accounts. I need to make 10 CC transacations a month to get my 6% interest.
So because I *DO* have a lot more than $1.50 in the bank (for my 6% interest account), I put these stupid little transactions on my credit card to meet the monthly requirements.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I don't think it's a big deal. With the way the economy is now, I think it's a wise choice to charge as much as you can (if you pay it off) to gain as many incentives as you can.
