I hate when people carry dogs around like they are accessories. It's a freakin' dog, why do you need to take it everywhere with you? The dog will be OK if you leave it at home for a few hours while you run errands. Trips to Petco/Petsmart fine, but the grocery store, malls are unacceptable IMO unless it's a seeing eye dog.
I think that there is a distinct difference between socializing a dog & treating it like an accessory. JMO
But that is a whole other thread

OK, you guys aren't seeing what I'm saying.... to SOME people a dog is their child... so that could explain why we're seeing dogs in store and places where normally a dog shouldn't be allowed.
I would NEVER thing to treat a child like a dog... give me a little credit here.
I know what you're saying ... and this could be a whole other thread entirely.

HOWEVER, some people consider their dogs their children, like an actual child... should people with children leave them home alone when they go run errands?
I am not a mom, nor a pet owner, but leaving a dog home alone is NOT the same as leaving a child alone. A house trained dog is FINE to leave in the house for a reasonable time period (ie. in time to be let out, not cooped up for days at a time, being fed regularly), while a small child shouldn't be left in the house alone. And plenty of people leave their older children home when they run errands. Plus, children are allowed in stores, pets are usually not. And it's perfectly reasonable.
Ok, I need to come to CoopersMom01 defense here....she is not saying that there is a direct correlation between a child and a dog! She is just saying that to some people (I happen to work with one) think of their dogs with the love and adoration that they would a child, that's all.

I agree.... I am a mom and have a dog. I truly find it insulting when people compare their pets to my child. It is NOT the same thing. DH wanted the dog and I basically tolerate it in the house. I care about the dog's well being, but I will never put it on the same level as my child.

As for comparing dogs to children. I will agree that it is a grand over-generalization, but I have to say I have seen some kids do some pretty gross things in grocery stores, and evil things to the produce when mom or dad's back is turned, so I can see where someone might use that as a frame of reference. Since it would be ridiculous for a store manager to say "no kids allowed in the grocery" even though they are doing something unsanitary. I know it is not the same, but I can see where the thought process comes from.
THANK YOU!!! Yes it's a broad generalization, but I'm not saying chain your kids up and pray to god they don't pee on the floor like a dog... I'm just saying, that there are pet owners out there (my aunt is one of them with her 2 90lbs+ labs) that will not leave their house without there dogs... the same way a parent will not leave there house without their child....
and i'm done...

Sorry - my dog loves to sit in the car. He waits for me and gets a good nap when I do errands. He enjoys it. So did Ebony.

Not all of us tolerate our dogs. Some of us would put the dogs life before our own. I know that sounds extremist, but it is a reality among the pet community. Just like anything else it is a difference in opinion, just as I get horrible offended when I am told that my dogs are only animals & not part of the family. To me they are. Different strokes.....

I honestly don't see a difference.... A dog has no business being in a grocery store. IMO

I totally agree.... I respect the fact that many people love their dogs and view them as part of the family. Dexter is a part of our family, but I also don't treat him like he's a human.
I just think that pet owners should have the same respect for people who dont care for animals, especially in public places like grocery stores.

I honestly don't see a difference.... A dog has no business being in a grocery store. IMO Please read my previous posts. I understand what you are saying & as stated before I don't barge in against anyones rules. There are some pet-friendly places - even grocers. Also I carry my dog to socialize it with people & other environments. They are small & would not get that opportunity other wise. Just because I carry my dog does not mean I treat the dog like an accessory. My dog is more a part of my family than most of my actual family. Again the "different strokes..." comes into play here. I am incredibly offended when people overgeneralize & automatically think it is OK to say I have a "pocket" or "accessory" dog. In the pet community that has a bad connotation that your dog is strictly for fashion, and trust me my dogs are not fad nor fashion. (and I am not taking this as a personal attack from you, but I do want to clarify why I disagreed with your OP about "accessory dogs".)

So...if you don't have a job outside the home, don't have human children but think of your non-human pet as a child, are you a SAHM?

Re: Pets in grocery stores!
I think it's gross and inappropriate. And I say the same thing regarding my 60 pound dog. If it's okay for the little yappy bitey thing, why isn't okay for me to bring my totally gently Weimie everywhere? Hypothetically, of course.
BTW, I work in a retail environment...and although I am not a manager in the retail area I make very loud comments about people bringing their animals into the store. I have seen dogs pee on the carpet and try to bite the salesmen...forget about if anyone has allergies or not.
It's ridiculous and IMO those who insist on bringing their dogs into any store that isn't a pet store are wrong.

was the dog walking on leash? and it peed and the mananger/salesman didn't say anything?
--- if the store is pet friendly- why shouldn't an owner be able to bring their dog?

Re: Pets in grocery stores!
Dogs are not human so there is no need for them to be in a store. I am sick of seeing them sitting in carts, or in their "mommies" arms or even worse propped in a child carrier. Unless they are seeing eye dogs they should be left outside. I don't give a dang how small they are.
Before it is said I yes I do love dogs!!
