I would put him back in the swing for a couple of more weeks. If you don't want co-sleeping to be a habit, I wouldn't start now.

Because he got himself out of it - I had only swaddled his legs and he still woke up a lot. My main issue is that when I get him back to sleep with the paci, he'll wake up again soon after.

Invest in "Happiest Baby on the Block" DVD! It will show you how to swaddle and calm baby to crib.
Some clips on YouTube on it.

Re: Please Help!! Need Advice - Baby not Sleeping at night!

Michal, we had the same issue with Yael. She had digestive issues, so for the first four months she slept upright, swaddled, all snug in her infant-toddler rocker. She was sleeping a good 8-10 hour stretch that way.

At our 3 month appointment the pediatrician told me it was time to take her out because it wasn't safe and it was restricting her movement, and to put her in her crib on her back. The first night I tried, she wasn't having it - up every 45 minutes!

I went against my Pediatrician's advice, because, at the end of the day, Alex, who was colic for 6 months, slept in her swing until she was about 8 months old, and she was never harmed by it. So I figured I would wait until Yael was a little more ready.

When Yael was 5 months old, I tried again. Still didn't work. So, at 6 months, I tried yet again, and it worked. I'll admit, it was a rough go for a week or so - she definitely wasn't sleeping as well as she was in the rocker, but eventually she got the hang of it, and started sleeping through the night again Chat Icon

Re: Please Help!! Need Advice - Baby not Sleeping at night!

Thanks guys - for MY sanity, I do want to put him back in the swing- but, I know it's not the best for his head. I do have to see what ped says. I finish work the end of next week so I do know that this is the time period that I have to work on this - I would hate to give myself an "easy time" right now and try again in two months - when I have to go back to workChat Icon
Also - we're going up to NY for most of the summer in the next couple of weeks - he is going to be disrupted yet again, but I wanted to at least try and getting him sleeping in a crib/pnp vs the swing. I just don't know what to do at this point.

He has not been sleeping well in the swing for the past month, as is.

What about the noggin nest? I have never used it but I know some ladies have. Also what is the difference of him being in the swing at night or on his back in the crib? Chat Icon

Melissa, I got the Noggin Nest about a month ago and was using it religiously in the swing. I asked the specialist we saw last week for his head about it and he said that at his age, it is not going to do anything because he is too mobile. I agree - I don't understand difference between on back in swing or on back in crib but both ped and specialist said since he has more room in crib to move around - head isn't as "confined" as in swing.

I don't know I would probably give him another week or two in thee swing. when he falls asleep turn his head to one side-maybe even roll up a receiving blanket so he can't turn his head. then switch it again in a few hours...Do you have white noise in his room? I would probably try to transition him first for naps in his crib, then do nighttime. Even though it seems atrocious this will pass and you will barely remember it!

Re: Please Help!! Need Advice - Baby not Sleeping at night!

The only way Luke will STTN is if he is swaddled. I stopped swaddling the last two nights again, and he was up every 2-3 hours. Tonight we are back to swaddling. I even tried belly sleeping him (the ped. told me to go for it) and that didn't work.

What are you swaddling him in? I don't really want to go get larger swaddle me's.

Re: Please Help!! Need Advice - Baby not Sleeping at night!

what about a sleep sack so his feet are 'free' to move? does he suck on his hand all night or just when he's putting himself to sleep? because you can leave the arms free until he's asleep then put together the swaddle me wrap. its velcro and can't be undone. and from what i've been told, if you're baby can get out of it, the swaddle isn't tight enough. definitely invest in the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD... its worth it.

also, when DD is overtired and wont put herself to sleep, i always put on the radio to a staticy channel. she's out with in a MINUTE. maybe you can try that... leave the radio on the whole night- its supposed to be calming to them, mimicking the sound in the womb.

what about side sleeping? is that an option for you? you could try it since you've come close to trying everything else!

CAn you get a miracle blanket or a swaddle me? This way they really cant get out if it's tight. He might fight the swaddle. My older DD did. I would swaddle her as she fell asleep and she would fight it but I would hold her in it for a few more minutes after she was swaddled to calm her down, then put her in the crib. Right now my 3 mold old DD sleeps swaddled and fights it for a second but then sleeps through the night. If she's not swaddled, she's up alot! As everyone told me when DD#1 had sleeping issues, this too shall pass. You might feel like you might pass out, but it will pass! Chat Icon

Those swaddling gimmick things are no good for us, they are too flimsy. DS thinks they are a game, he got the swaddle me around his neck in 1 hour. Never again I threw it out.

I use big square flannel blankets, and learned the DUDU technique from "happiest baby on the block" (I should own stock of that DVD)

I use Swaddle Designs Ultimate Receiving Blanket:

Instructions on how to swaddle are there as reminder. But the technique took me a few tries to really master with a screaming baby.

Here's a good video to show what I do too:

Re: Please Help!! Need Advice - Baby not Sleeping at night!

Thanks so much ladies for all of the suggestions. We do use white noise - AM radio static - when he wakes up. He goes to sleep initially to his lullaby CD and rain noise machine.

I swaddled last night in the miracle blanket but left his arms out. I did prop him last night to sleep on side.

I'm going to try all again tonight.

I use the Miracle Blanket, he can break out of his sometimes but usually just one arm, not enough to wake him.

Re: Please Help!! Need Advice - Baby not Sleeping at night!

Have you thought about the Nap Nanny? That is what we are using now and DS loves it! DS doesn't have reflux but doesn't like sleeping flat. We realized that when he STTN for the first time when we let him spend the night in his bouncer because he had a cold. He didn't like being swaddled (and I was the biggest proponent of swaddling because DS1 loved it!) It's ridiculously expensive $130, but if it helps it's worth it IMO. You can buy it at BBB and use a 20% coupon. And if doesn't work, they will take it back. The only thing is you aren't supposed to use it in the crib. DS is now in my room with the nap nanny. I'm thinking of moving him to his room and leaving on the carpet in his room.

Re: Please Help!! Need Advice - Baby not Sleeping at night!

My only other suggestion is trying the pack 'n play or a portable crib if you have it. We have the Graco Travel Lite, which we used as a bassinet in the beginning and still use when we visit family. It's smaller than the crib - she's def not swimming in it - and since the bassinet part is suspended, her movements swing it and I think she likes the sensation of that. We only use her crib at home, but she does sleep really well, almost better, in her travel crib. It looks just like a pnp, but is a bit smaller.
