Poll Spin-off: Do you live with your parents/ILs?

Its ironic that Ophelia posted the topic about whether you could live with your parents/ILs...cause a friend of mine outside of NY was saying how she can't imagine how so many people do this -- and I said that in Long Island especially, its more common cause people are having trouble affording housing.

Since getting married -- do you live on your own or with your parents/ILs?

we own a coop but if my parents lived here and had room for us- I definately would have lived with them- why not!

I have a MD House that I had way before I even met DH . My mom is down & we are up.. Been trying to sell for something bigger for a while now, but the economy suks... I dont mind it , It def has its moments, but I wouldnt trade it for anything being close to my family is improtant to me

FH and I live in an apartment over my parents garage. The garage isn't attached to the house, we have our own entrance, it has a separate address and we pay for water, electricity and heat separately, but we'd pay close to $2k a month elsewhere for what we have. (Plus is helps I get to use my Moms washer and drier). My sister and her DH lived here before FH and I.
It's true that it is common on LI, I know several of our married friends who live in apts in their parents/ILs house.

Nothing against either of our parents, but there is no way in h e l l that we'd live with either of them unless we were in dire dire dire straits.
I wouldn't feel like we had our privacy as a married couple

you know I do

my, dh, and my MIL share our 3 bedroom apt in brooklyn.

dh and I own a home we go to on the weekends (and have started to occassionally commute from) in Orange County.

we save a lot of money b/c the rent on our apt is rent controlled, so even though we pay the bills/rent, we were able to save a ton b/c the rent is so cheap.

my MIL is probably the best kind to live with...she only wants to DO stuff for you and she NEVER gets in the business.

she DOES have the tendency to go into the bathrooms in the am to shower when I need to pee before leaving for work but besides that, she's a gem and it works for us.

My parents own a 2 family home and we live upstairs and they live downstairs. We don't get in each others way and I rarely see them unless we need something from each other. It's very convenient and the rent is great

We hope to be able to afford a house of our own one day. This works for us and my parents love that we are so close however they do complain that they don't see us much. Imagine if we lived in different houses. LOL

DH & I own our own home. We love both sets of our parents but there is absolutely no way we could move back to them as a married couple....

We now have our own home but lived with my parents for a year. We had a problem with the apt we were renting so my parents offered us a room. We stayed there for a year and saved for our house. It was trying at times but well worth it.

I lived with my inlaws for a few years before marrying DH...

The stories, I tell ya.... I can go on & on.

Now we live in an apartment in my inlaws 2nd home.
Not a bad living arrangement at all. My inlaws are pretty cool. (I learned this FINALLY)
Crazy, but cool.

I would never move back in with them. Ever EVER. Or EVERRRRR live with mine. EVER. Did I say ever?

I moved out as soon as I got home from college. The taste of independece was too much for me to handle so I was outta there.

I still miss being at home, but it's for the better. I get along better with my sisters because I don't live with them. I do miss hanging out with my mom and dad all the time though.

IF there was an apartment in my parents house, I think I could swing that.

We have a house but, we also live OOS so it's A LOT cheaper. But, DH may get laid off soon and if he does and things get bad enough my parents have already offered their studio apt above the 2 car garage at their home back in NY and we already said yes!

Our situation is a little different. My DH and I bought a house with DH's sister and her husband and did renovations to make it 2-family. It's a hi-ranch so it's pretty much equal as far as space is concerned and we completely gutted first floor to make it 3 bedroom, 1 bath like 2nd floor. It was the only way for all of us to get into a house, and it works as a starter house. I definitely don't want to be here more than 4 or 5 years b/c I can't stand my SIL's husband! We split almost everything 50/50, including renovations for downstairs (and some upstairs too) to make up and down the same, and each were responsible for own kitchen and bath.

DH and I both lived at our parent's before we bought our house.. and that was only 2 years ago..
it was a good way to save money towards a house!

we own our home, we did live with our IL's for a month, while our apartment lease was up and trying to make settlement on our home

No way no how.

I would do anything to avoid that situation.

I love both sets of parents dearly, I just don't see that working out.

We are all happier living on our own.

Down the road if my mom or dad was alone, I would certainly have them live with me.

DH and I own our home.

My mom is 15mins from here and if we needed to, we could live there....

but no way would I want to live w/my IL's

at the moment we live in a room in our ILs. We had an apartment fall through on us while we were staying here then we all decided we would wanna buy a hi ranch and make the bottom part an apartment for them and we have the bigger part upstairs. they're going to be snowbirds in like 5 years so it made sense. for us, it was the only way we could possibly afford a nice house, have a child and 3 dogs. It'll be completely separate so it doesn't bother us. just how we're living right now totally blows

my parents even offered a two family house- wouldnt work with my dh...

my inlaws- we stayed there for 2 months bc we closed on the house the week of our wedding... I think it might work with them but we'd need a HUGE discount

I never know what's going to happen, but for now...DH and I live alone.

My Mom's parents lived with us when I was growing up and both of my parents told me they would never do that to me, but things are going pretty badly for my parents financially, so we may help them out and I would never rule out them living with us...

We live in a mother/daughter with my inlaws.
They have the apt.
We have the house.
They are "snowbirds" and wanted something smaller.
After renting apts. for years, this was a dream come true.
Love them to pieces, it saves us $$, we have private entrances and respect each others privacy as well.

My brother and SIL are in the process of selling their home to move in with my father since my mom passed away.

I was hesitant at first, but, am so glad we did it!

DH and I live in an apartment basement at my parents house. Def. helps us to save for our own place one day. Thank goodness we get along with my parents and even if it was my inlaws we get along with them as well so either way it would be fine with us.

I moved out of my parents' house before I was even engaged, and I don't think I could ever go back. I love my parents more than anything in the world, but after a while we just started to clash. It was definitely time to get out, because as soon as I did, my relationship with them became 100 times better.
