Re: Pros and Cons on living on the island?
I like that we're an hour away from the city but also close to the beach and wineries.
Cons: expensive to live here

Re: Pros and Cons on living on the island?
Well, I am from Queens but it can also apply to LI: Everything is within an hour or so -- the beach, the greatest city in the world, "country" anything you could possibly want!
The cons: TRAFFIC!

Re: Pros and Cons on living on the island?
I lived in Queens for 28+ years. I'm now in Nassau. It's quiet, not many street lights but I like having a backyard. I'm not that far into Nassau so my LIRR train stops in Queens a lot and I notice many backyards that are so much smaller than mine. That's pretty much it.

Re: Pros and Cons on living on the island?
I moved here last year and the biggest con about Long Island that i've found (other than the traffic) is the size of the lots. I grew up on 3 acres of land, house up on a hill with lots of privacy. Here...not so much! Plus all of my friends and family are still in CT and i miss them

well, i dont live ON LI, but do live in Queens..but from what i can seee:
Why do people (generalization) from Brooklyn or Queens say they don't live on LI? Brooklyn and Queens are on LI-you don't take a bridge, tunnel, ferry or plane to get to these places.

When I was reading the responses to this thread, I was wondering how many people consider living in Queens or Brooklyn living "on long island"
I have lived my entire life either in Queens or Brooklyn and I would never, ever say that I lived on long island or was from long island. While I obviously realize that physically, I do live on the island which is called Long Island, I think that most people when speaking about Long Island are talking about Nassau and Suffolk. I have found that there is an exception to that if someone is not originally from here.
It's kind of like the thread a couple of days ago about what do you answer when people ask for your nationality and for the most part they are asking your ethnicity. To me, long island is Nassau and Suffolk.
Edited for spelling

Geographically, yes, they are ON Long Island; however, psychologically, it's a whole different thing...we're in NYC!
I live in Northeastern Queens, which definitely has a suburban vibe, but a place like Forest Hills, for example, I don't think compares to anything on "the Island." And in most areas of Queens and Brooklyn, you can walk to wherever you need to go; public transportation is generally a couple of blocks away and there are sidewalks everywhere. I would never describe myself as living on Long Island. I think we "New Yorkers" are probably pretty snobbish about that.

Re: Pros and Cons on living on the island?
Thanks to the 2 PP, I know most people know they are technically on an island, but consider themselves NYC people.
I've had people actually ARGUE with me that Brooklyn and Queens are not even on LI...those are my favorite quarrels.

I love where we live. One major "CON" for me is that we have well water. I refuse to drink it, so I buy a lot of water.

ITA Queens is a different world vs. nassau and suffolk. the taxes (property and income )are not the same, along w/ many other differences

Re: Pros and Cons on living on the island?
this post makes me sad
yes long island is expensive
but there are still plenty of oppertunties here- esp for people to buy house
I always have people tell me they will never buy a house here
my first question back is "who told you that?"
"I looked it up online"
if you are both working- go sit down with a mortgage professional and see how easy and affordable it can be
I just had someone tell me they have a budget of $225k and want to live on the northshore from Stony brook to Rocky point- 81 houses came up!

Call me cynical but:
How much work do these houses need? What are the taxes? What school districts (good/bad)? What if you had to commute to NYC?
I bet the answers eliminate a lot (well with commute to NYC all of them) most of them for most people as an option!

While property taxes are higher in LI, DH and I pay really high city income taxes bc of our combined income. Higher then my friends in LI, they get slammed with RE taxes--we get slammed with income.

your very cynical- I have sold many houses for under $250k in good school districts in suffolk with taxes less then $10k that need only cosmetic updating
plenty of people commute to NY from suffolk
the north shore of suffolk has great schools
with what rent is in these areas- it can be even cheaper to buy- as my best friend just discovered
she is buying a 3 bed/1.5 bath condo in PJS with taxes and insurace it will be $300 more a month then she pays for a 1 bedroom rental- not including the tax benefits she'll get the following year- as well as the star tax saving bringing her payment to only $200 more
everyones sitation is different - but unless you have a reason you can't get a mortgage- and FHA loans are not hard to get- most people can buy here- maybe not there dream house- but what's wrong with starting out small, building equity and trading up?
I bet that's what most of our parents did- my Dad's first house wasn't the 4 bedroom/3 bath colonial I grew up it
