q for SAHMs: does dh give you spending money?

i hate to say "allowance" but how does this work?
when it comes to buying your own personal things like clothes , gifts for friends or even dh, where/how do you get money? is it set aside for you in a personal checking account?
do you get a certain amount every week?

ii think i may someday be a sahm.. like maybe if we had 3 kids so i often wondering about this topic..

We purchase everything on the credit card, and then pay it off every month. We have a budget, and live with in that budget. I buy what I want, when I want as long as it fits into that allotted amount. Same goes for my DH.

I'm not a SAHM, but my one friend gets "paid" by her DH every week as if she were a nanny/daycare, etc. They established an amount that they thought was fair for her to get paid, and he gives her that every "pay period."

Another friend just has a joint account with her DH and she is in charge of paying all bills etc, so she takes from the account whatever she needs.

No I give it to HIM. He knows nothing about bills, money etc. His money is my money. Actually I dont even liek it this way, I wish he could help out with the bills a bit more, etc, but it is what it is.

I cannot ever imagine asking my DH for money. It's just not how I roll .

Not a SAHM but this would never fly with me.

Just as the income of the person working affords the spouse the ability to SAH, the fact that the SAH stays homes affords the person who works the ability to go to work since the kids are taken care of. In my opinion that means that the income belongs to the family-it's not "his" money because he is the one with the job. You both support the family and are dependent upon each other so the income is earned by all.

For us, a budget would be worked out and we would have a discretionary fund that we could use after bills are paid, savings taken care of, etc.-like we do today.

Actually *I* get an "allowance" every week. The majority of my money goes into the joint account, which DW pays all of the bills, and whatever she wants to buy. I have a little going into my account which I use to buy gas, repairs, "toys", etc.

Nope! I go to ATM when needed. When I go shopping (grocery, clothes, whatever) it goes on our bank card as credit.

I'm not even a SAHM, I work full time, bring home a nice check...and it gets direct deposited into his account. I have to ask him for my own money back, lmao. I have a spending problem, much better this way.

This would totally not fly with me...I worked hard before I was a SAHM and it all went into one checking and savings account, OURS...I go to the ATM when I need to and he sees it, but there is no "allowance" it's both our money, unless I go nuts which I tend to sometimes, he doesn't say a word...

We also rarely use credit cards, it's always cash..that way we know we can afford what we're buying and not going over...we have a savings account we do not touch

right, i know that everyone is equal and just b.c you are a sahm, doesnt mean you are not contributing to the family etc..

i know that, i mean in terms of spending money, do you just withdraw from the checking as you please or do you give yourself a set amount each week? and when it comes to buying dh a present, do you just withdraw from the checking?

i know dh's money is my money and vice versa but eventually i think someday i will stop working..maybe i should start my own little gift fund...

I was a SAHM until DS was a year, we just have a joint account, both with debit/credit cards. I just spent whatever I needed to using my debit card.

As for gifts, I go to the ATM so he doesnt see on our online statements where I just bought him a present and give away the surprise.

I mostly use the credit card. He works in a bank so if I need cash (like for the cleaning lady every 2 weeks), I generally ask him to take out whatever I need.
Before we even got married, we decided that for all "big" purchases, we would discuss.

I use the credit card and pay it to zero at the end of the month. If I need money for coffee, etc. I'll pull it out of his wallet!

I take out money every week and try to use only that. If I need more, i take it out but the old way of debiting everything wasn't working.

It is VERY hard financially for me to stay at home. We barely make it. So the way that works best for us is this method. He does the same exact thing (Sets aside cash every week)

It is working wonders for us and has made me very aware of where the money is going....if I want to continue to be at home with my boys this is how it has to be!

every now and then dh will give me cash. the norm for us, is before most purchases i call him and tell him what i am buying, and how much it will cost.

I have a credit card and a bank card. If I want something, I buy it with my CC or if I need $ - I go to the bank and take it out. Generally, I don't even talk to DH about my purchases - I mean, if I am going to go buy like a $10,000 dining room set or something, then, yes (and, not asking his permission just discussing), but normal everyday expenses - no. Our bank accounts all have my name on it as well. It is "our" money.

We have a joint checking, I just use my debit card for whatever I need.


eta: He only comments if I come home with a ton of bags. He will ask so how much did this cost me? I also handle our finances and could rob him blind in the middle of the night. We only discuss large purchases.

We both are WOHP's and we have in our budget spending money (allowance if you want to call it that) each week that we get.
