Question about recent Flying experience
I am to fly Southwest and I suddenly remembered how close everyone is after landing when they go into the overhead storage. Does Southwest have any procedures in place to avoid that? I can't imagine how.
Where is a good spot to sit and how crowded has it been? Do I just go to the back of the plane and hope people still prefer the front?
Any tips? TIA

Re: Question about recent Flying experience
I just flew Southwest on Monday. The flight was packed - not an empty seat to be had. They kept making announcements that every seat was taken. From what the gate agent had told me, almost all of their flights are sold out. They have been canceling and combining flights so they're not flying empty planes.
As far as getting to the overhead bin after the flight, other than an announcement that you should practice social distancing, there is no procedure in place about loading or unloading the plane.

Thank you. At least I know how to prepare myself mentally!

Re: Question about recent Flying experience
I would double up your mask and just wash your hands and alcohol wipe them after touching the bins, etc. Masks are what is preventing spread when you can't social distance yourself.

Question about recent Flying experience
To piggyback on the flight question....Does everyone where their mask the entire flight or do they take them off if sitting with family?

Re: Question about recent Flying experience
We went to Disney in Feb and both flights were relatively filled. If u feel uncomfortable standing next to people when it’s time to get ur things from the overhead compartment, u can always wait in ur seat a bit longer til people are done getting their things and leave? It doesn’t take too long to grab things so the crew won’t hurry u up or fell like they have to wait for u.

Masks have to be worn the whole flight and they are very strict about it

This. My DH travels for business and they are definitely very strict about the masks. He said they even demonstrate how to move your mask aside when you take a drink.

I guess it depends on the airline and flight attendants because we pulled our masks down during the time that we were sitting down and from what I was able to see, the people around us (front/back) did the same. Nobody said anything. Our airline was United.
They offer drinks and snacks so u will be pulling ur masks down at some point unless u wear one of those masks that have an opening in the middle to eat or play an instrument.

Yes, Masks must be worn at all times. I flew Southwest a few weeks ago and like others said, very packed. I sat in last row one way and felt the safest there. It's all the same, everyone on top of each other boarding and disembarking. I wore a double mask just to feel safer.

Yes you definitely can take it down while eating and drinking. A friend from work thought he was smart and brought a bag of popcorn and slowly ate one piece at a time and sipped water to avoid wearing a mask for a long period of time and they said something to him finally. lol Someone else I know said he put his jacket over his head and leaned against the window and pretended to sleep so he could take his mask down unseen- but IMO a jacket over your head isn't very breathable either. It does depend on the airline I assume and the flight crew on how strict they will be

Thanks all. That is what I was hoping. But we don't fly until August so who knows what it will be like then lol.

Re: Question about recent Flying experience
Middle seats are taken, at least for Frontier as my child just traveled with them last week. Masks on the entire time they told me except for eating and drinking but yes they don’t allow you to just do so the entire flight.

It's reasonable to quickly eat and drink, but you are saying you were on a sealed tube, breathing circulated air, clearly less than six feet from several people outside of your household, un vaccinated, and you kept your mask down the whole time?
That is stunningly selfish.

AMA article
Risk while flying is low.. During air travel, the risk of COVID-19 is lower than from an office building, classroom, supermarket or commuter train, says the JAMA Patient Page, “Risk of COVID-19 During Air Travel,” co-written by Dr. Pombal.
“To date, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 transmission to airline passengers around the world is small,” said Dr. Pombal, adding that there have been only about “60 cases over a period in 2020 during which a total of over 1.2 billion passengers have travelled by air.”
“The odds of being on a plane with a person with actively transmissible COVID—both positive and in the window where they are significantly shedding as identified by the research—are quite low,” said Drs. Shoor and Ortega. However, “the best portion of the discussions and agreements revolve around the flexibility of response because one size doesn’t fit all.”
Airplanes have proper airflow “In general, air enters the cabin from overhead inlets and flows downwards towards floor-level outlets,” said Dr. Pombal. “Air enters and leaves the cabin at approximately the same seat row or immediately adjacent rows.”
“The airflow in today's aircrafts have been measured at three times the amount mandated for infection control rooms in hospitals,” said Drs. Shoor and Ortega. “It takes the ventilation system of a plane about six minutes to reduce the number of viral particulates in the air by 99.9%.
“This fact alone reduces risk significantly compared to office buildings, restaurants or homes,” they added.

Can we STOP calling people selfish? Were you there? If so then maybe you could have Karen’d all over them. You do realize that Covid is not spreading on planes and I am sure people have their masks off for at least a little bit of time.
We all need to worry about ourselves and stop attacking others, especially when you were not in “harm”.

It is getting tiring of the Karen’s on this board. It didn’t even affect them but they find the need to call people selfish.

Re: Question about recent Flying experience
I flew in Feb and it was packed both ways. Not 1 extra seat. Of course they cut their direct flights so everyone has to fly into Baltimore, so that adds to it. They do not space anyone out. I wore a N95 mask the whole time and never once took it off. I did not drink anything or eat anything.

Interesting. I guess then it depends on the crew? Like I said, people around us did the same, maybe they were also sitting down with family? Who knows. But just while sitting down though. Whenever someone stood up to go to the bathroom or to get something from the overhead storage, that person would get reminded to put up their mask. I’m not sure about the rest of the passengers.

How stunningly selfish Shoor and Ortega are for daring to say such silly things!
Joking aside, I read that same article before. Very interesting info!

Re: Question about recent Flying experience
i've flown about 8 times during the past year all on Jetblue.
More recent flights have been very crowded and or fully booked. One flight I took the crew asked people to stay seated until the row in front of them retrieved their bags from the overhead and to prevent crowding. That was the only time that announcement was made on any flight I was on. It was so great; I have to wonder why Jetblue isn't instituting this as policy on all fights.
Otherwise yes I'd stay in the back and wait in order to not be surrounded by people standing
I have been double masking, one of them an N95. I wipe the seat down with a clorox wipe. I wear wrap around sunglasses and a hooded jacket. I end up looking like darth vader but so what.

This. My DH travels for business and they are definitely very strict about the masks. He said they even demonstrate how to move your mask aside when you take a drink.
Ha! What airline is this on? I’ve traveled a lot in the past year and I’ve never seen this!
You are allowed to remove your mask when you are eating or drinking. I have taken mine off to eat lunch on almost every flight I’ve been on so you are definitely not masked there entire time. But if you aren’t eating they expect you to have it in.
