Re: Red Light Camera Suffolk List
Posted by HeatherRose most do not have this including the ones in nassau
you should look for 2 seperate white pols on the right side of the road a bit back from the stop light
one will have a flash device the other a video camera, just like the traffic camera's. also at night as soon as the light is red, you will sometimes see 2 flashes
I was speaking of the Suffolk ones, where a lot of them do have that sign.
But your method works too.
I remember being over in a diner by Roosevelt Field a few months ago, and the constant flashes going off at OCR by the Roosevelt Field entrance was hilarious to me. It looked like lightning

Re: Red Light Camera Suffolk List
I have never ever received a ticket from a red light camera. They had them in Queens for years before I graduated college.
For those that say people slam on their brakes, YOU SHOULDN'T BE DRIVING ON SOMEONES AS* period.
I'm all for these cameras because there isn't enough police force to enforce people running red lights.
It's very obvious to spot them. There are poles with white boxes and a black hole on them. Hard to miss unless you're whizzing by!

Now there's one at the intersection of Nicolls and 347, that's going to be bad news for all the college kids and hospital employees.
Why? How hard it is to STOP at the STOP light? I think it's ridiculous that people complain about this. It's basic driver's ed. You stop on a red light. If people are not stopping then it serves them right to be fined.
Seriously. And if it's that hard to stop, maybe you shouldn't be driving so fast. The speed limit on most local roads is between 35 and 45 and the idiots I see are doing 60. Of course it's going to be harder to stop when the light turns yellow/red.

I agree that no one should be on anyone's butt, but can you tell that to the guy behind me (I dont tailgate)?
Actually they have been popping up on roads like Vets Highway (speed limit is 50). There used to be one on Lakeland and Vets...speed limit 50.
Im not for or against them TBH. I dont see them as "big brother" but rather just another attempt at the state to gain revenue. People get tickets all the time and still continue to break the rules, run lights, and speed. I would love for them to try to cut down on aggressive driving and blowing stop signs too. I just dont see it detering all that much. I see people blow through the same intersections all the time and they have cameras. Personally, I'm never 5 miles over the speed limit (which is still considered speeding, I know), and I yield before making right on red. Yesterday a "gentleman" behind me nearly ran us both off the road while he hung his head out the window on the LIE service road to scream/curse at me for yielding to oncomming traffic before making a right on red...in a camera light intersection! So if they want to stop this type of stuff, they need to deal first with people's over-inflated egos and anger issues first.
As far as the right on red...you have to yield to the light first (that means comming to a complete stop). Thats the way it was explained to me anyway. However, I try to avoid these intersections whenever I can.

Re: Red Light Camera Suffolk List
I was at one of those intersections today and didn't notice the camera or any signs. I did turn on green.
If a guy rear ends you, then at least the accident is his fault. If you both go through then he gets a ticket too. win-win? LOL
I dully support these. They helped so much in CA where I used to live. It makes MORE people more cautious drivers. But some people will never care anyway.

Who said anything about it being too hard to stop on red?? I meant it's going to be bad news for them bc I'm sure lots of people are going to be getting slammed with tickets now which $ucks, I never said anything about whether or not they deserved it.

I blew through that intersection last night, and saw a flash once I was in the intersection. I'll have to wait and see what happens.

Re: Red Light Camera Suffolk List
They added cameras at Old Towne Road and Rte 347 and Rte 347 and Stony Brook Rd.
The one at Nicolls has been operating for well over a month. The county and state probably have a bit a money already from this intersection. Each night I drive home, the lights are flashing at 1-2 cars who drive through the red.

My dh got 3 tickets by his job and you can make a right on red but they wouldn't let us fight it just make sure you don't make a right on red even if there are no signs
Did he make the stop first? They are only supposed to give tickets to anyone who makes the right on red, ONLY if they failed to FULLY stop at the intersection before making the turn.
DH's friend works for the county and said the cameras are always snapping pictures at every little thing that moves across the line, but that tickets only go out after they review and analyze the photo to see where exactly your car was in relation to the line. I've blown through tons of yellow lights that quickly turn red and haven't gotten a ticket because I time it just enough so I know I can get the front wheels of my car past the middle of the intersection before the flash goes off... (this proves you crossed the line when it was yellow, and not red). it's tricky!
