So, people are offended by other people being offended? Now, that "offense" is being taken as supporting a "War on Christmas." This is the most fabricated outrage I've ever witnessed. Why not take that energy and apply it to something that is real? The Christmas spirit should be based upon charity and family, not Santa and Christmas trees!!! Talk about being shallow.
And kindness right? Christmas spirit is about kindness
But I'm took shallow according to you to know that

This has gotten so completely out of hand. People need a little perspective.
What is out of hand? People thought it was ugly. They said as much. The mall took it down. End of story. Maybe I am missing something but that doesn't seem out of hand to me.
This has literally overtaken social media - not just here on LIF but on FB it's the only thing people are talking about, I can't even tell you how overloaded FB has been this past weekend between this and the Starbucks outrage.
What is the Starbucks outrage? What's up with that? Haven't seen that one!
the Starbucks outrage is over their holiday red cups. People are pissed because this year they are just red. So as not to offend.
Not disagreeing with you, but Starbucks response was that the plain red is suppose to.be calming. That's what I rrad, anyway

I am so sick of he argument of worry about something else
So because people wanted this changed tbt don't care about other issues. Give me a break
It's totally ok to use social media for change to other hints but bc this is minor to some and obviously not a serious issue it makes people crazy for doing it
And for the record I shared it on fb bc I thought it was ridiculous. It looked awful and not Christmas like
I never declared a war on Christmas etc
But what do I know. I'm a idiot and only care about mall Santa's and nothing else
Keep spreading that Christmas Cheer
I agree with this...all those people who say they have better things to worry about are the exact reason why things like this display are happening.
If it does not bother you than pin a rose on your nose, but DO NOT dismiss that what Simon corporation and other groups who cater to these whiney people, did was a big slap in the face to one of the biggest religious groups in this country. We let this slide, than what?
We already don't allow GOD in public schools and have to worry about saying Merry Christmas to people who don't celebrate and getting offended, and calling the Rockefeller Christmas tree the Holiday tree...I mean seriously???
They call it the "Holiday Tree" now?? Stop. They do not!!! If that's true, that's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. SMH. A Xmas tree is now called a holiday tree???? I just can't, that's just insane.
At the elementary school where DH teaches, they call it a "friendship tree" Way to teach about diversity and other cultures.

*IF* someone complained and the mall changed it for that reason, how is that different than people now complaining about the change? It's really not.
It's just people complaining about people complaining.
Complain that you don't like Santa, complain that you don't like the pod. That's your right and I 100% respect that. Just don't complain that someone on the other side of the argument is doing the exact same thing as you are.

Seriously??? Give me a break...why bother? Don't even talk about Christmas at that point.
Why is it that the public schools added 2 holidays to their school calendars this year so that those who celebrate can have off? YET, those who celebrate Christmas have to be PC about it and call it a 'friendship tree' or use decorations without Santa or Jesus or anything remotely close to the meaning of Christmas?

I am catholic. If I passed a menorah and my child said what is that I would not say oh a bunch of candles. I would explain what it is. And other religions celebrate this way et.
So a tree should not be called a holiday tree or a friendship tree(that one is nuts). It's a Christmas tree. It should be said

Agreed!!
A tree is in your yard or in the parks or side of the roads, what stands all lit up and decorated in the middle of NYC during December is a Christmas Tree. They don't have it up for any other holidays because it has nothing to do with any other holidays - it is associated with Christmas - hence why it should be called a Christmas tree not a holiday tree.

It's not all that matters. It's not "just a tree". It's a CHRISTMAS tree, it should be called by it's proper name by ALL. You want to stick a tree in your living room and call it a "friendship tree" have at it but in the REAL world you should be calling things by their proper names out of respect for those that celebrate that particular holiday. In this case, Xmas. It's a Christmas tree, NOT a "holiday tree, NOT a "friendship tree"...........a XMAS tree.

What you call it at home is what matters. That's what I'm saying.
IIRC, a Christmas tree is relatively new in regards to Christianity. The important thing is the nativity scene.
The Menorah does go back to the Old Testament, I think.
But none of that matters. It's what you call it at home to your family. That's what counts.

It's a Christmas tree, regardless of how long the Christmas tree has been around. At Christmas time we put up a CHRISTMAS tree and it should be referred to as such by everyone. I'm sure a Jewish person would not like people making up some new, silly, "sensitive" name for their menorah, right? So why shouldn't someone be irritated by a Christmas tree being referred to as a "friendship tree". It's NOT a friendship tree, so don't call it that. Call things by what they are. At home. In school. In stores. Everywhere.

I'm Catholic, I say Merry Christmas, our cards say Merry Christmas, I send them to my friends and family of all faiths. I am not offended by anyones religion.
I consider myself pretty PC, sensitive to offending others etc. this is ********. When my son asks about a menorah I will explain it to him, same for all religions.

I agree with you on that. BUT, some of the comments directed toward those who *may* have complained about the santa scene (if it even happened) were equally snarky. I don't know that you personally said anything like that and anything directed AT you was uncalled for.
All I'm saying is that everyone has a right to complain about something they don't like, especially as a consumer, but to complain that someone else complained seems silly.
This is coming from someone who has no dog in this fight.

Re: Roosevelt Field Mall and Santa
Did I miss something.. When did a Christmas tree become a religious symbol? Three wise men, crosses, nativity scene those are the religious symbols.
And I'm sorry I believe in an effort to include Everyone & be PC there seems to be an exclusion of Christmas, I hear and see it. So please let's stop saying this isn't true!

You're missing the point. No one is asking you to call it a "holiday" tree.
Schools are calling it that because religion is a touchy subject these days. I have no problem with them teaching about the history of religion, but there is really no reason that they need to go into certain specifics of the religion. That's what religious education and home is for. Schools are just trying to include everyone.
It's holiday time. Just make it a general holiday time at school and do what you want at home.
FWIW, it doesn't bother me that they call it a holiday tree, I'll still call it a Christmas tree. But I can see how certain religions don't want their children to be excluded or how atheists might not want religion in schools. I get that.

I'm not missing the point. If you're going to put up a tree during the holidays then refer to it as what it is, a Christmas tree. No other religion celebrates with a tree so to decide that now we're going to use what is a symbol of Xmas, although not religious, to include everyone is silliness. Teach kids about all of the holidays and teach them what the symbols are for each holiday but don't just take something that is meant to celebrate Xmas and rename it and use it for another purpose.
And you know what, it's all nonsense not talking about Xmas and other holidays in school. When I was in school we had an actual Christmas tree in out classroom and we called it a Christmas tree and ALL of the kids in class helped to make decorations for it. And we sang Xmas carols. And we sang Hanukkah songs too. And we learned about the menorah and the traditions of Hanukkah. And we read stories about both holidays and everyone had a lovely, fun, festive holiday season in school. Not sure why that needs to change.
