saw something the other days that is still bothering me
I was in a food store, not in my town the other day. As I shopped a young couple(the girl was pregnant) were shopping near me. I heard them adding up what they were buying, figuring out if they had enough money. She was Nexteling another girl telling her she was getting egg noodles instead of regular pasta because the bag was bigger & it was cheaper Anyway, it just so happened I ended up behind them on the checkout line. They had 4 cans of spagetti-os, store brand mac & cheese, big store brand bag of cereal, a box of diapers which they had to switch because they rang up 24.00 and a few other things. Hardly enough to feed a few adults & a toddler. Anyway they had a $50 store gift card & they ended up not taking all of the spagetti-os because it brought them over $50. I was about to give them a few extra bucks & then the cashier said the gift card was no good The guy nexteled the other girl & said the card is empty. They left in such a hurry, I wanted to offer to at least buy the diapers......anyway I feel so bad about this. They weren't the most put together looking people & I don't know why neither of them were at work in the middle of a weekday but i'm horrified that there are people with no money for food. I told the cashier I thought it was sad and she said "it happens all the time"

Sad to say this but I have seen this before where peopel "find" giftcards and try to use them only to find out that it has no value. I don't know if this were the case or not but you never know.

I know, but they didn't have cigarettes or soda or anything but cheap food....kinda makes me think they really just needed to eat.
Today I was giving stuff away through freecycle all day and another young couple(girl pregnant) came to pick up a desk. My DH was talking shop to the guy because he had a "work van" the guy was saying "there's no work out there, I'm hoping things will pick up after labor day". She said they just started renting a place & need furniture. I'm happy I gave them something they needed but it concerns me that these people are having babies with no money to raise them

It's sad but true... And it's funny b/c if you tell anyone who's not from around here that you're from LI, they automatically assume you're rich.

so sad--I was in Pathmark once and there was an older man (about 70) in the back room yelling, "I need these things! I didn't want to steal but I had to!" --broke my heart

You were reading my mind, with both stories. Why are these people having children??
DH and I have held off on TTC b/c we want to be in a better financial position before we bring a child into this world.
I get very frustrated when I see things like that. IMO it's very irresponsible.

I hate to be judgemental but it seems to be typical of young people these days that they had Nextel phones and no money for food. I see it with my younger relatives, everything is about material things, not the necessities.

I agree. Everyone says oh, you cant wait to be financially stable or you'd never have kids, but guess what, you should be stable enough to afford food, diapers, medicine, and a roof for your children. It's sad that their irresponsibility is affecting a baby who may be going hungry. Don't get me started on people who continue to have children when they cant afford the ones they have.

Believe me, we'll never be millionaires and I hear ya when people say "oh you'll never be truly financially ready" but I know we want to be as close to "financially ready" as possible.

my mom works in a pharmacy....and she tells me some very interesting stories of some of her most ridiclious customers---with 2, 3, 4 kids in tow---all different dads pulling out the Medicaid card and whining about the .50 co-pay for their meds. the best was a woman with 4 kids (3 dads) -- doesn't work, lives off the system, and Medicaid was paying for her FERTILITY meds!!! you can't handle the 4 kids you have and you're getting FERTILITY medicine paid for to have MORE!!!

I don't want to sound mean either but these are the people you see at the local carnival spending at least $100 on rides, games and food. Some people just do not have their priorities straight and while it is sad, we as taxpayers are paying for them to eat because they would rather go and blow the money. Sorry, just my 2 cents-I have seen Section 8 housing and these people had huge TV's and the latest toys and gadgets but not much food and ratty clothes for their kids. Very, very sad.

agreed. DH and I want children very badly but we understand that we need to wait because it is what is best for the child -- and for us, financially.
once we are settled in our careers, have a place of our own and some cash tucked away we will start trying.
for now - we work until we get there.

Re: saw something the other days that is still bothering me
Wow...the turn of this thread saddens me. How do you know these people are spending $$$ at a carnival or stealing gift cards or milking the system?
They were trying to use a gift card to buy items, not food stamps. And apparently they were on the phone with the person who gave them the card and were embarrassed when there was no $$ on it and ran out.
Sometimes people just fall on hard times. How do you know this wasn't a couple who had just lost their job or some other such thing? How many people on here have asked for help and received it? The economy right now sux...anything could be happening to them right now. I have friends who just had to do a short sell on their house cuz they were going to lose it. He's been a handyman/home improvement guy for 20 years and business just dropped off. They couldn't pay their mortgage and refinanced in the hopes that business would pick up again, which didn't happen. She went a got a job and he got a job, but they just couldn't make the payments. They aren't milking the system, but they fell on hard times. They aren't bad people and have always paid their bills with some $$$ in savings and it all kind of ran out on them.
I would have been with Kelly, instead of judging - I probably would have felt bad that I didn't jump in to help.

Well accident happen and more then you would know. Its always the cliques spoken about but theres a lot of people out there who are just trying, trying hard to make it.
Well Let me come out and admit we are NOT financially ready for another child.
Not even close, and It scares the crap out of me and I have had to put food BACK at the store b/c the darn prices are insane and my PG"cravings" are not neccesities..and it makes me cry to think about it.
But My PG was a pure miracle. We were told we had les sthen a 5% chance of getting PG naturally and yet we did. So we are thinking of it as a miracle ..ready or not.
So now Im to be looked down on because we have fell onto hard times due to this damn economy and this damn arsehole president, when both my DH and I with College educations cannot find work for second jobs or decent childcare.
Why cant we just say, Wow , those people have it rough and Stop judging how they must be screwing the system or stealing gift cards or why they should get rid of their phone or not working.
Just thank goodness your not them and say a prayer they find their way!
Vent over!

In all fairness, a lot of people don't have home phones these days, it could have been his only phone. And Nextel has a pay-as-you-go phone with (I think) the same push-to-talk feature as the regular ones so that's a possibility.

I am sorry if you are offended by what I had to say. I did not intend to hurt your feelings specifically, but it is how I feel.
I would give ANYTHING to have a child, really I would, but right now my husband and I just can't do it.
Does it KILL me? Sure.
But it is our opinion that we need some more time to get our finances in order and be absolutely sure we're ready to have a child.
I can't speak for your situation and if getting PG was a miracle for you, that's fantastic, but for me and my husband, we're holding off.
Going through financial difficulties can be stressful enough, adding a child into the mix is just something WE don't want to do.

Thank you for saying everything I wanted to say. How does anyone on here know anyone else's TRUE financial situation? How do you have the right to point fingers and say that "those kinds of people" must do this or that. What if this particular couple lives paycheck to paycheck and just needed to stock up a bit until their next paychecks? And here you are playing the "milking the system" card.

Right..Many dont WANT to do it. Probably no one WANTS to do it.
2 months ago life was fine. then my husband lost his Over time and that monthly income was our Rent and 2 or more bills, suddenly not there...and then we find out we are PG...and are trying so hard to be happy while faced with these hard times.
Im not seeking pity or sympathy, Im showing you how it happens, how eeasily it happens to the average person.
And how hard it hurts when judged without background knowledge.
