Baby showers are incredibly boring. I go because I love my friends, but I don't enjoy them at all. I didn't have a shower because I cannot stand them. Sorry, I don't know anyone who actually enjoys them.

I think old ladies who doesn't have much else going on enjoy them. That's about it.

I don’t know maybe my family and friends know how to party. There is always alcohol and for the most part a dJ at the showers I attend. I have fun at them. Lol

You need booze.
Nobody wants to sit through the opening of 20 diaper cakes and 100 onesies without some wine or something.
Even just a spiked punch.
Something.
I couldn't drink at my baby shower but I made damn sure my guests- who were giving up their Saturday afternoon to watch me open gifts- had something to drink

This!

I'd at least have a punch. I went to one shower (I've been to tons) and not even a punch was offered and people were going to the bar to buy their own drinks. People seemed surprised and I think offering at least a punch is a nice touch. Personally when I've thrown showers I offered beer, wine, and a punch.

I just feel like if I am hosting a party... regardless of the occassion.... I want my guests to have the best experience. Especially if they are bringing gifts.
A few bottles of wine won't kill anyone in the scheme of the cost of party.

I actually enjoy showers too- when alcohol is served and the food is good- just like any other party.

We serve alcohol at all parties, that's just how our group is. From baby showers to first birthdays to christenings...

I enjoy at least a champagne punch and if they can afford alcohol, even better but I wouldn't not go if there was none of the above. And the nice thing is, the past few showers I've been to, the invites stipulated clear wrapping for the gifts and they were merely displayed and not opened at the shower. It made it feel more like a regular party.

I have some advice from experience: Know your crowd. If they're heavy drinkers, open bar may be the way to go.
If you run a "tab" to avoid open bar costs, it never really works. People see other people drinking something and it goes "viral". This happened at my baby shower. Wine and beer were "offered", but one aunt had a mimosa, and bam, everyone was ordering faster than they could drink them.
I always choose "house wine and draft beer" or "mimosas and bloody marys" and the waiters can only bring those drinks. So, instead of asking people "what would you like to drink", they ask "today we have house wine and coors light. Which would you like?"
If someone totally doesn't drink wine or beer, then of course we told the waiters to bring them something, but for the most part, people got the memo.
one party was 52 people, bill = $185
One party with 40 people, bill = $135

I see nothing wrong with it. I had a champagne punch at my shower.

Re: Serving Alcohol at Baby Shower

I had one a few weeks ago, I just ran a tab since I thought there wouldn't be anyone drinking that much. It was from 1-5pm, so quite some time to pass. Everyone pretty much got drinks, at least two or more per person.

I live in Jamesport so typically I am driving an hour+ to showers. That alone requires booze. Throw in the endless games and boring food (Caesar salad, penne a la vodka, choice of eggplant parmigiana, chicken francaise, stuffed sole) and I'll drink my calories, tyvm.

If you are hosting a party where people are expected to bring fairly expensive gifts, I think it's a little rude to not offer beer, wine and soda. I understand that people would like to cut costs somewhere, but I would choose to cut down or completely eliminate decorations before cutting out alcohol.

ETA: Another cost cutting option is favors by making a small donation to a charity and leaving little notes saying "In lieu of favors, the parents to be made a donation to ______________." For me, unless its edible, I hate take home favors and usually end up throwing them out when I get home.

This thread reminds me of the one time my cousin decided to not have alcohol at her sons bday party. What was that for.. my uncle was appalled. Went out to get beer and we drank from the back of his car. The best part was him going around to us and whispering he had boozeChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You shouldn't feel bullied. It's just that at a party, any kind of party, it's nice for people to be able to kick back with a cocktail. I think most people expect it as they would expect a meal of some kind.

This...You are expecting people to bring your sister gifts but are quibbling about giving them a mimosa in return? Come on!

wow I cant believe how many people feel they need alcohol to tolerate a baby shower! I love showers, Its an excuse to see my friends and.or family and celebrate the guest of honor and a new baby. I also enjoy the cheesy shower games! Maybe I am weird. I also am not big on day drinking and hate both beer and wine. BUt jeez if people hate showers so much -- just don't go!

For what its worth I do not think that you need to have anything alcoholic - 90 percent of the showers I have been to have not had alcohol and if you do have alcohol I think mimosas or a punch would be perfect!

I need alcohol to survive life not just showers Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: you have to know your guests, in my family a function without alcohol is weird even when we get together on the weekends. Others may be fine with it.
