Should I feel bad about this (baby shower related)

I went to the website, babyshower101.com to get some ideas for favors, games etc

on the site it says this:

Who Hosts the Baby Shower: Historically, the baby shower was hosted by someone outside of the family (friend, co-worker, symbolic Aunt). Today, anyone other than the Mommy-To-Be and her mom can throw a baby shower for her friend or family member! It is most common for the Best Friend, Aunt, or sister to throw the Mommy-To-Be the baby shower! It is becoming more common for co-workers, cousins, groups of friends, or church/temple friends to throw the shower and much appreciated.

I don't have any siblings, all of my cousins are overseas (including aunts etc) so my mom is throwing me a shower...which I'm helping with. Is this wrong to do? Most of my friends are guys, and the my girl friends are friends, but not super close....

and forget about my IL's Chat Icon

At my bridal shower, a lot of family friends helped throw it together, but it was much bigger....this shower we're trying to keep more low key.

Is it wrong then we even have a shower? Now I'm upset after reading this....Chat Icon

Don't be upset reading this. My mom is throwing me my shower also. I never even knew it was customary for someone other my mom to host it.

not at all! just because a website says your mom shouldn't host doesn't mean anything..all of the shower's i've been to have been hosted by the mom or mom-in-law and my mom(s) are planning on throwing mine (months from now)
don't worry! and yes, of course it's ok for you to have one!!!!Chat Icon

Re: Should I feel bad about this (baby shower related)

Don't be upset at ALL, my mom threw mine, and all of my sister's. They say the same thing about bridal showers, but in truth all the ones I've ever been to have been thrown by the bride's/mom's family. That tradition is an OLD one and doesn't reflect the reality of current times. OK it would be tacky to throw your OWN shower but as long as it's your Mom it's FINEChat Icon

IMO I think that information is pretty dated and I don't think anyone can say that there is a "norm". Who ever wants to throw the shower throws it! Who ever you want to come should come if they want to! Also, it is common in hispanic cultures to help throw your own shower if not throw it yourself. Don't be upset! This is just a stupid article!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: If anything, most moms would be offended if they weren't involved in planning the shower!!!

That's ridiculous...anyone can throw a shower. My parents and in-laws are paying for the catering, servers, etc. and my sisters are doing all the other little stuff. Who cares who throws it? It's a party for all of you to celebrate the baby! Enjoy, don't stress! Chat Icon

dont feel bad technically my husband is throwing my shower. because my family memebers couldnt get it together and my husband didnt want my friends paying for the shower so he stepped in and put his foot down. problem solved. i dont think it matters who throws it for you. dont worry.

Re: Should I feel bad about this (baby shower related)

That is weird.. the way I grew up, I thought it was the Mom who gave their daughters showers (wedding or baby) and it trickled down the line from there... sisters, cousins, friends...

Glad you've already been put at ease but add me as one more "don't be uspet"!!! Chat Icon

Re: Should I feel bad about this (baby shower related)

I think it's fairly common for the mother to throw the shower. My mom planned most of my baby shower on her own (with a little help from a friend & my aunt) & she helped my bridesmaids out a whole ton with my bridal shower too. I wouldn't worry about it at all!

Re: Should I feel bad about this (baby shower related)

I think the idea is that it is rude for Mom to ask for others to buy gifts for her daughter. It's a nice thought that others would throw the shower, but these days it's just not realistic.

I wouldn't worry too much about the traditional "rules" for baby showers. My mom, DH, and I are putting together my shower and I am totally OK with that.

Re: Should I feel bad about this (baby shower related)

Don't be upset. My mom is throwing mine and my sisters ( It's joint being were 2 weeks apart) and were both helping her out with stuff. So it's no big deal. All the ones I have been to it's usally the mothers or sisters who threw them.

I thought it was tradition for a sister or mother to throw the shower...never heard of anyone else. My mom threw my shower. I wouldn't worry about it at all.
