Are you saying that now we should have peanuts and those with peanut allergies should not fly?
Yes, clearly that's what I'm saying. Screw the sick people so I can live my life. Thank you for reading so carefully and trying to see what other people are saying. You're right. We're wrong. We all just send our kids out into the world to get other kids sick. There's actually a club for it.
Well clearly when someone said that I should put my kid in a germ free environment, they wanted to turn the table and the issue is my son not the sick kids sent to school.
How is that different from me making the peanut allergy analogy. Not allowing PB in school? Should kids with allergies not be allowed in schools either and go in a peanut free environment. Apparently some people and schools and airlines feel differently.
In most public schools, PB is allowed and children with allergies sit a seperate table. I do not believe that they stop people from eating nuts on the plane, but they just don't sell them.
I think it is apparent that no matter what anyone says, you just don't care.
How ironic to say I am the one who does not care when everybody is justifying sending their sick kid to school because they cannot take time off work. Are you serious? I feel that's the other way around. Look in the mirror. *I* am being told I need to keep my kid in a bubble so sick kids can go to school. Let's get real here!
But the point is they're not sick. They have a cold. I can not even imagine calling into work and saying, "I am sorry I can't come into day. I have the sniffles and may be coming down with something." And you know what ..as a teacher I would have all sorts of disapproval for staying home. ...for a cold. Not for being sick. Let's be real. The person writing asked about a common cold. Seriously?

Posted by smdl This is really assuming a lot to think people have the LUXURY to stay home. You don't know people's life, sacrifice they may make to stay home. Whether they work PT or not work at all.
It's almost as bad as assuming that people have the 'luxury' to take off every time their kid has a booger
my favorite reply yet.

Maybe I misread the 4 pages of this thread, but do people actually keep their child home from school if they have the sniffles or a runny nose? I don't think it would occur to me to keep my child home unless they had a fever. Yes colds can be contagious but they are also contagious during the incubation stage when you don't even know you have one. If the argument is that you should keep them home to protect other children then you would also have to keep them home if they had a rash or an eye infection. And a cold lasts for days - how much school can they miss? Maybe I'm just very, very old but when I was growing up kids didn't stay home for colds.
It seems to me that the people who have the luxery of staying home are the ones who feel kids should be kept quarantined if they have a cold.
Coincidentally, these are the same people who don't have school-aged kids. Which is what I thought this thread was supposed to be about.
I think once these kids get to kindergarten, we'll hear a much different tune whistled......
Wow "people who have the luxury of staying home"????? I have made ALOT of sacrifices to stay home for my son - for me it is not a luxury. I would have a MUCH more luxurious lifestyle if I went to work. I do this FOR my child. And,as for the "quarantine" comment - i think that is a defense mechanism for parents that can't stay home with their sick kids. I personally said "sick" in my posts - I'm not sure how parents can automatically assume that a common cold isn't and won't turn into something more - if they had it for a while that is a totally different story. And, I am sure I feel differently when DS is in school but, I will still keep him home when he is sick so he can get better and so he doesn't infect other people.
I didn't mean luxery as derogatory. You DO have a luxery that some others are not able to have. If you did NOT have that luxery, you might have a different POV. You sacraficed for that luxery, but it is a luxery nonetheless.
Personally, I don't see being a SAHM as a luxery at all- but apparently lots of others do.
And I'm sorry- but ANY upper respiratory issue, including allergies, can become something more- and believe me, I won't be keeping my kid from her education because of an allergy attack.

Please re-read the thread. All of it. See who you were talking to, and what you were saying to them. Read what other people were saying. Take yourself out of it for a moment and try to see that people are not out to get you and make your child sick. (And the bubble comment was sarcastic)

I know many parents have jobs where they cant lose time at, but that is no one's fault and no one or no child should have to get sick b/c of a CHOICE that parent made in careers....
wow.
Yeah. Choosing to not be homeless is quite a selfish thing, huh? If my kid gets pneumonia on the street, then everyone is exposed. If I work, then he has a home to be in if he is sick. Ah, the selfish choices us working moms make.
FTR I have taken at least a week without pay because I had to stay home with a sick Cailen.

Re: Spin off the "keeping a kid home"
oh and for the record.....DS goes to daycare has cold 95% of the winter which he most likely caught from other kids at daycare. I DO NOT hold these parents responsible nor do I care all that much that they sent their kid to daycare with a cold that my DS now has.
Bottom line - they are KIDS and runny noses happen. They Have since the dawn of time and will continue to do so for the rest of time. are germ monsters. It comes with the territory. So my advice is, send your kids to school with a common cold, keep your kids home if you dont want them to catch one, or send them and run the risk. THE COLD HAPPENS, happens to kids, happens to us, happens to everyone. Its one of the fun parts of winter, like shoveling your driveway. No one likes it, no one is happy about it but it is what it is.
Dealing with runny noses and germs are par for the course when it comes to kids. Debate it all you want, there IS NOTHING you can do about it.

Yes. Personally, I think a kid should be kept home for any illness, especially one like a cold that is highly contagious. If parents kept their kids home when they had a cold, then they wouldn't miss so many days, because the kids wouldn't be passing the cold back and forth to each other, KWIM?
I agree

Re: Spin off the "keeping a kid home"
I want to clarify something. I meant school-aged kids in my OP- but found the debate interesting.
Also, so as NOT to alienate the SAHM's and others who are able to be home with their kids, I did not mean to imply that ya'll are livin' the high life. What I meant was that for SOME people, the ability to be able to take time off for something as innocuous as a cold IS a luxury.
Sorry to have offended- it wasn't my intention.

I actually agree with you and I am a working parent. I dont have the luxury of taking off any time I want BUT I also established myself with a ton of resources for cases of "what if". I have family memebers that "could" stay as last resorts but I also have friends and friends of friends who would help me out in a bind. I dont think there is ever a "No Win" situation...you just have to establish these connections.
With that said i dont think with every sniffle a child needs to stay home but there sure are a TOn of kids sent to these centers that clearly do not belong there.

Re: Spin off the "keeping a kid home"
just read through it all...this post has scared the hell out of me.
my kid is going to be out all the time.
have compassion for sophie...it is a hard job. someone's kid's runny nose does in fact equal ER trips in a car with a baby gasping for air. it does equal more meds in their little bodies then imaginable. it means waking all night for treatments and analying breathing and stomach movements with your dh.
we are new parents dealing with this. its scary. its scary to know that this is what the next 10 years have in store for us.
my pulmonologist told me i am going to be very familiar with drs notes and emailing teachers for missed assignments. that sucks.
