I know many parents have jobs where they cant lose time at, but that is no one's fault and no one or no child should have to get sick b/c of a CHOICE that parent made in careers....
wow.
Yeah. Choosing to not be homeless is quite a selfish thing, huh? If my kid gets pneumonia on the street, then everyone is exposed. If I work, then he has a home to be in if he is sick. Ah, the selfish choices us working moms make.
FTR I have taken at least a week without pay because I had to stay home with a sick Cailen.
Huh?? Did you even understand what I wrote?
I plan to go back to work soon myself....What will I do when my kid is sick? I will get the list of 17 babysitters my SIL has on call that she has to beg to help her watch her kids when they are sick b/c she too cannot take off from work and if that fails, pray I dont get fired.
Lifes a b1tch and I CLEARLY see your side, So dont turn it around as if I was implying anything.
And Im NOT TALKING about the sniffles...
And I'm done with this thread b/c its turned into what it always does, a round and round of disrespect for BOTH sides of the coin.
One day we will have an intelligent debate .
We always have intelligent debates!
It's been one of those days. Trust me when I say I wish that I could just run away and live in a cave somewhere and not worry about a job, bills, daycare, sickness, nada. Cailen had croup last month, i stayed home for a week when I was out of sick days (because of him) and so far we are going on over a month without some of our utilities. I have no disrespect for anyone. It infuriates me when people say that this is a choice. Yes, I worked hard for my career. And I work weekdays AND weekends - I have a full time job AND 3 part time jobs. I work everyday of the week. Nothing about choice, but all about necessity. But if Cailen is seriously ill, he stays home. But if I miss too much work because of it, I'm out of a job, and DH has less flexibility than I do. It doesn;t mean I still send him...

[ With that said i dont think with every sniffle a child needs to stay home but there sure are a TOn of kids sent to these centers that clearly do not belong there.
right... but the topic of this 'issue' was whether or not to send your child to SCHOOL... not daycare.
there is a huge difference, IMO b/c not only does a person who may have limited resources have to miss work, but a child has to suffer academically as well...
I can see not sending a toddle or infant to daycare b/c of sniffles, but a school aged kid, nope. not unless he had a fever or was bleeding out of his orifices.

Clearly you are right--- really. I actually realized that once you pointed it out BUT then I also realized that this debate is being argued by 99% of toddler/baby moms. so in the end its all over the place.

Tonight I learn that people don't give a $hit about others.
Sadly, you joined that group.
Since my kid ended up at 6 months in the ER with a strain of RSV, respiratory distress, over 104 fever because a kid had a "runny nose", I beg to differ.
That kid was sent to daycare by his parents with just a sniffle. He ended up contaminating half the class. 1 other kid was just as sick as DS and both had to be off daycare for 2 weeks. Yes, that parent that did not have the luxury to take time off, meant that I had to take 2 weeks off work. I was working FT at the time so I did not have the luxury to take time off either. But I had to. Because his parents could not take time off. It cost me 2 weeks being off work. This kid constantly had sniffles. He would all the kids sick all the time.
So yes, I do take it at heart.
There is no justification on my book to make others sick. I don't care how you slice it. Especially when you know your kid is sick.

Just curious - what do people do when they as parents have a cold and are in a home with children. Do you leave the house for a week until it has passed?
Im seriously not being snarky, Im just asking.

Absolutely! Now out of curiousity...to the OP what made you ask about "school aged" children? I guess after reading all the post I got lost in translation but especially knowing you had 2 little ones I was convinced we were discussing toddlers.

Trust me Sophie, I have been there - Cailen went to a daycare before his current daycare with 90% welfare kids - and before I get flamed for saying that, let me say that this was a double whammy - poor moms who couldn't miss work, and poor kids without health care - so no one was going anywhere. Cailen also got very ill with coxsacie multiple times there - so trust me, I feel for you, and I never send Cailen when he is very sick... but he has gone with a runny nose as I explained above, and that kennel cough...
As parents, we will be faced with all types of people out there, with all types of situations. And there are levels of consideration, and some fit into people's lifestyles, and some don't. I do all I can to be considerate, and there is no way I want MY poor baby feeling miserable and sick and wanting mommy and sending him to daycare. So I keep him home.

I expect to see kids in school with colds. If kids were out every time they had a cold they'd never finish school. I don't think people realize how much these little germ catchers get sick those first few years.
When a kid is clearly ill with a fever or pink eye I
I used my DD's nursery school's policy as an example, but went on to clarify "regular school" which apparently to many people means daycare, pre-K, and airplanes.

Coming from a mom whose child has like NO immune system.... and at the age of 4 has had every illness known to mankind; which has hospitalized us 3x's.
I dont think there is anything wrong with sending your child to school with the common cold... I DO however think that many parents need to learn the difference between common cold and illness though...
FEVER- GREEN SNOT- MUCUS coming from your kids eyes... yea... time to see the DR. and some rest on the couch.... (far far away from the healthy kids )

Re: Spin off the "keeping a kid home"
I'm not interested in getting into a war, but I do want to express my opinion.
People who have colds ARE sick, no matter how you want to spin it.
And most people say they'll keep kids home for 24 hours after vomiting or diarrhea, but that's no good... a little-known fact I just recently learned: everyone is contagious for a minimum of 3 days AFTER all symptoms of a stomach virus are gone! EVERYONE. Many people are still contagious for up to 2 weeks afterwards. So that's the big one for me: in a perfect world, I'd want everyone to stay home for at least 3 days after a stomach virus is over. That's the worst thing for a kid and parent to have to deal with.
(P.S. Here's a source for that info: CDC info about stomach viruses .)
I don't like all the "bubble" and "homeschool" and "get a grip" kinds of comments... I think it's really sad that so many people not only look for ways to justify sending sick kids to school/daycare, but on top of it, insult parents who wouldn't do that to your kids.
I would not intentionally let my daughter be around other kids when she's sick, even it's "just a runny nose." And that's coming from a struggling single mom. We all make choices in life based on our priorities. My first priority is to keep her (and me) healthy; my second is to keep everyone else healthy, too.
I'd love to meet more like-minded moms.

Some of us happen to think that a cold is being sick.
How long would you keep your DC home with a non fever, non green mucus, non achy cold? Just a normal clear mucus cold?

please dont take offense to this, and im sure you will..but seriously, your dc is what? 2? 3? I have an 11 year old, when yours is 11, tell me youd keep him home 3 DAYS for a 24 hour stomach virus, "just to keep my kid well"
give me a break. seriously. This post was about SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN..which MOST OF YOU FIGHTING AND POSTING DONT HAVE.. I have a TON of resources if my son is sick for him to stay home, when i was working 47 hours a week, AND now that im a SAHM with (SOON TO BE) 2 infants at home.. I dont send my ds to school sick because i would feel bad FOR HIM, i dont even think twice about your children when my own son is sick...SOOORRRRYYYY. Thats reality..call it selfishnesses, but i can guarantee in ten years you will all be singing a VERY different song. GUARANTEED.

First of all this post has gotten sooo out of hand its absolutely ridiculous!!!! Secondly I couldn't agree with this posters views more!!! I only have a 9 month old so what do I know.... But, I have noooo immune system and growing up in a household where both my parents and grandparents worked and were struggling since they literally just came to the country they would do anything for me to stay home...most of the time a simple nothing cold with me turned into bronchitis, strep or ear infection for me...I've had the "simple cold" maybe a handful of times in my life, most of the time it always ended up being something more bc of my immune system, so my mom, dad, and granparents did not have the "luxury" to stay at home, but they sacraficed and did anything they could to keep me better and OUT OF SCHOOL....that was their first priority nothing else, and I plan to be just like this with my children...so call me living in a bubble or that I may homeschool my child, I guess I'm just weird
