Spin-off to Zofran -- a few questions

A lot of you ladies have experience with Zofran, so I’m hoping you can answer a few questions.

I had horrible all-day sickness with DS#1 – severe nausea, chills, headaches – but I never threw up. I was prescribed Zofran but only took it for a few weeks because of the constipation. I was sick until about 18-20 weeks and lost about 10 pounds. I’m not a skinny girl and the baby was growing so the doctors weren’t concerned.

I’m now 11 weeks pregnant with DC#2. At four weeks, the all-day sickness started again, worse than ever. I had decided before I got pregnant that I would take Zofran no matter what and manage the constipation other meds.

Although I’m not throwing up, I’ve lost about 8 pounds. I’m on 4mg. of Zofran every 8 hours, but it is not working AT ALL. Is it possible I need a higher dose? I see some of you girls were on 8mg doses.

When/how do you take it? I take it as soon as I wake up, wait about 10 minutes and then try to eat something (usually an egg). I then take it 8 hours later, usually mid-afternoon, an hour or so after lunch. I am “due” for another dose right before bedtime, but I haven’t been taking it because I don’t think it is working (and it just makes me more constipated). Does it matter if I take it on an empty stomach or not? With food, without food?

My OBs are great, but I feel that because I am high-risk (I had a form of pre-eclampsia with DS#1) that the “all-day sickness” is kind of low of their list of priorities. All they care about it making sure I don’t get pre-eclampsia again. I’m supposed to be avoiding stress, but when you are nauseous and in bed all day, praying for death and unable to eat a thing (or basically subsisting on pastina), it’s stressful.

I've tried other remedies (jolly ranchers, crackers, preggo pops, lemons). Sometimes they work, must most of the time -- nothing.

Thanks in advance.

Ask for 8mg...I was taking it 3 times a day in the beginning of my pregnancy. Then I only needed it 2 times a day after about 3 weeks.. For the constipation, you can take colace. Or if you can stomach anything try frosted mini wheats or shredded wheat...It helped me a lot. I was on Zofran and Iron..I thought I was never going to be able to go again! But after a while I figured out that the cereal helped...Hopefully the m/s won't last too long and you feel better soon..

Higher dosage and more often. I had HG so had to take it continually through an IV (catheta in my leg).
