Re: spin off- who can actually change a flat tire?
My dad made sure we could change a flat as soon as we got our driver's permit.
I haven't done it in a long time, but I'm sure I could look at it and figure it out.

I can but I have roadside assistance. If they can come to me I let them but I know how to do it if needed.

Re: spin off- who can actually change a flat tire?
never got a flat while alone in the car but i wouldn't have the first idea how to change one. i would call roadside assistance, then my husband just to complain.

Re: spin off- who can actually change a flat tire?
I can and have numerous times. Just a few weeks ago I had a blowout on 107, pulled over, changed the tire and went to have it replaced that afternoon. It only takes about 10-15 minutes so it's well worth it to know how.
Then again, I can change my own oil, replace brake pads and change all the filters. I stay away from the heavy stuff.

mostly to vent- my car only has a dounut and the tires are $250 a piece
Beth-don't you have an SUV? I was told when I got my first Jeep that SUVs HAD to have a full sized spare and not a donut!
I've always gotten full-size spares with my cars. It's a must.

Re: spin off- who can actually change a flat tire?
Right after I got my permit, Dad made me learn how to pump gas and change a flat.
I haven't had to change one yet, but I'm confident that I could if necessary.

I call roadside assistance but I will call my BF or parents. Just so they know what is going on.

I'm embarrassed to say I have no idea how. And we don't have AAA either, I guess I'd just call whoever is around to come help me.

Change a tire, change my oil, change my shocks, replace belts, replace hoses. I am a self sufficient type of girl who also has a husband who is very good at taking care of cars.

yes I have an SUV with a dounut- I was SHOCKED when I got a flat and opened the back and saw it- it wasn't something I thought to ask- but will in the future
I have run flats- but I have managed to pop 2 tires regardless

Re: spin off- who can actually change a flat tire?
In Ohio, you had to be able to change a flat tire to pass driver's ed. It took my dad 3 hours to teach me how to do it because I could not lift the tire. Even though I could if I had to, I am a big fan of AAA!

Re: spin off- who can actually change a flat tire?
I have AAA and OnStar. BUT, I can change my tire if I needed to. My dad made me learn how to before I was allowed to drive. I did change a tire once, with the help of some friends.

Re: spin off- who can actually change a flat tire?
My father would not let me drive alone until I was able to change a flat tire bymyself at night with little lights in under 3 minutes!
I HATED him for it then but now..... I can do it!
My DH actually makes me do it once a year on the car to "refresh"
He recently made me try again because I am PG and wanted to see if I can do it.
I think its important that everyone know how to change a flat and jump start a car!

Re: spin off- who can actually change a flat tire?
When I first got my driver's license, my dad would not let me drive his cars until I learned how to change a flat tire. He actually made me change a tire on his car out on the driveway!
So, yes, I can change a flat and have changed 3 of my own since then!

I really wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself- I don't care if that makes me sound whimpy or girly
I have a full size SUV
with huge tires - and I am pretty small
I have tele-aid for this reason (like on-star)
I have never waited more the 20 minutes for the guy to come
I once got a flat on a road with no shoulder in Queens by the 59th Street bridge- I don't think I could have changed safely it even if I knew how

I have a full size SUV and I'm 6 months pregnant and I can do it. If you feel comfortable just waiting for someone thats great. Me, personally, i'm pretty independent and don't want to have to rely on ANYONE..... I worked as a paramedic and all the Cops I worked with always said that a woman in a car on a road at night with a disable vehicle is an "incident" waiting to happen. Most of them make sure their wives can do somethign as simple as changing a tires themselves.
I've called AAA in the past for other issues and it has taken HOURS for them to come. Thankfully I was with DH at the time or I would have FREAKED

Re: spin off- who can actually change a flat tire?
that's great you can do it- I would rather lock myself in my car and wait for the guy to come
I just feel like I wouldn't be able to tighten the lug nuts enough
and I wouldn't feel safe driving the car after that
