I was referring to the jeans, not handbags, but if I do notice someone carrying a knockoff bag, then I tend to think "What a shame...either she doesn't know or she's trying to be something she's not."
Everybody has different taste, regardless of cost. I wouldn't think anybody got "ripped off" just because I didn't personally like the bag. It's pretty obvious that real designer handbags have an insane markup, but if you want to be frugal about your purchases, buy a legitimate handbag that looks similar to one you like.

If I know the original bag very well, or even the original designer, then yes I can spot a fake. I know Coach pretty well. I read ONE article about spotting Louis Vuitton fakes and now I spot them all the time!!!! The price of a really awesome fake is usually too high for something that is not the real thing.
I know someone who carries fakes and brags about how real they look, yet all her bags look like plastic, the labels are on all wrong, the logos are off, etc.
Even if it looks great, for a lot of people that does not justify buying fakes.
I've been carrying $50-$70 Vera Bradley bags because I don't want to spend the money on a pricier designer right now and I like these bags just as much. They won't last as long as a $500-$1,000 bag but they work for me. I can even buy fakes of Vera Bradley, for $20 or so but I just don't.

Not everyone is doing this though. I carry the real and fake because I like the design. I am not trying to impress anyone. No one can tell the difference so if I have the opportunity to buy the fake, I will so I can have more bags in my collection.

Believe me, you can not tell the difference. I took my real LV to a party because I would not buy one that looked fake. It looked exactly like the real, no difference at all. My fake coach bag is the same. I get the most compliments on it and the only way I know it is a fake is the serial number. The c's are even inside of the bag. It is so well made.
I even forget sometimes which ones are my real ones and which ones are my fake ones.

Believe me, you can not tell the difference. I took my real LV to a party because I would not buy one that looked fake. It looked exactly like the real, no difference at all. You can tell fake LV's by the straps. The real ones oxidize and turn dark brown, the fakes dont.

I happen to agree w/you. I was on line yesterday at Target and this woman in front of me had a fake coach - the C's were G's  the thought I had was "why??! just WHY"?

I ONLY buy bags because I like them. I am extremely picky too so I am not buying the 1st bag I see. I have to love it for awhile. I don't have to try and impress people because I could buy the real but feel that I would rather spend the money on my kids right now.

if you like a brown leather bag....get one. why kid yourself with LV all over it when clearly it's NOT an LV???
I am a BIG fan of the metallic Chloe bags...will I buy one...HELLS to the NO (but Chatham...if you ever get "sick" of yours, let me know  ) but I found I really nice bag in Milan that has the same "aesthetic" as the Chloe bag (at least to me...and it was about $80.
it doesnt' look like a knockoff, and it's the gist of what I want...I am happy.

LV monogram bags you can tell if they are fake.
Mirror image bags are getting good out there, but I would never buy a fake.
when people buy a fake is it to buy it b/c you just like the style? you are still sportin a designer bag - that you want people to notice and "believe" its real.

Sorry but I have to disagree. I have a fake LV and a real and I would have not gotten the fake if it did not look identical. I got it at the time because I could not afford $1,000 for a real one and I really wanted the bag.
I am not trying to let anyone know it is real of fake. I buy real or fake because "I" like them. I could care less what anybody else thinks. People who are not into bags have NO clue what kind of bag I am carrying anyway and are not paying attention. My SIL is into bags now but my MIL wouldn't know a $10 bag to a $1,000.

Aside from the fact that I have real bags now and wouldn't bother with a fake one, I learned that children in sweat shops make the fake bags. So you won't ever see me buying one again.

I agree, LV monograms you can tell. The straps are always a color that the real ones never turn.....the real ones go from almost white, to orangy to dark brown......the fakes are a weird color.

Explain to me how that makes me pretentious?
I felt that way before I owned any designer goods. Sure I loved designer bags, but as a student I couldn't justify buying one. Did I go out and buy a fake...no. I went to a retail store and found another bag that I liked that was within my means.
