I can sometimes tell, but some fakes are so good, it's hard to. I just don't like fakes, b/c I feel like I'm lying to myself. If "I" know it's not real...then I seriously don't care if others know or not. I'm the one who matters!

this is the Oxford English Dictionary Definition. Pretty much defines purchasing a fake as being pretentious, no?

I do think that buying a fake ANYTHING is pretty lame though....so I wouldn't do it.

I felt that way before I owned any designer goods. Sure I loved designer bags, but as a student I couldn't justify buying one. Did I go out and buy a fake...no. I went to a retail store and found another bag that I liked that was within my means.
I think its pretentious to assume that you know anthing about a persons situation by the bag (or fake) that they are carrying...You think that you can assume that they A) either don't know or B) Are trying to be something that they aren't, but to me the world doesn't fit neatly into two little judgements and to assume it does I saw as pretentious...the fact that you would cringe when you saw them carrying what they are carrying came off pretentious to me. if I misunderstood the meaning of pretentious then I apologize and stand corrected

I don't think its pretentious to assume those that think fake bags are okay to buy think that the associated child labor issues, terrorist funding, legal ramifications, and intellectual property violations are okay too. You can't buy fake and then say you care about the issues; you are part of the problem when you buy a fake. And, yes, as one person you can make a difference even if others are still buying the fakes.

I agree with this entirely.... maybe we could start something on the charity board to raise money and donate it to a charity that will help get children out of these situations... I would post it there but that board doesn't get so much traffic. I'm going to do some reseach for some worth organizations that fight this sort of thing.

I happen to agree w/you. I was on line yesterday at Target and this woman in front of me had a fake coach - the C's were G's the thought I had was "why??! just WHY"?
This is the same thought I have when I see people wearing bags with the label "prado" on it.. I just don't get it.
Some bags I can tell are fake, some.. not so much...
I personally wouldn't carry a fake bag... If I don't want to spend the money on the real thing, I'd buy something else. I wouldn't want a knock off anything.. seems tacky to me. but that's JMO

If someone approached you and asked you where you got your bag, would you tell them the truth (off the street, etc) or would you say you got it at Gucci, LV, etc.?

I HEART UNICEF. it's one of the organizations I would most like to work for. that is a great idea.

In France if you get caught with a fake handbag, they not only take away the bag, but they can punish you with a fine of up to double the amount of the "real" bag.
Maybe we should impose stricter anti-counterfeit laws.

If you want to help get children out of those conditions, maybe you should discourage people from purchasing counterfeit goods, not matter what their reasoning may be.
As long as people buy fakes, those conditions will continue to exist.

I have designer bags for years- if you buy the right ones- they NEVER go out of style
I rather buy 1 $500 one and use it for 5 years - then 5 $100 ones that fall apart
always buy classics with expensive bags- and sell what you no longer want on ebay
ETA- the oldest one i have now is at least 6 years old- I had one older - but I sold it on ebay last summer- it would have been 8 years old
