Re: Spinoff to the non parent thread...
The nice thing about the parent/child spots is that they are usually right next to the cart corral, so you don't need to walk so far to return the cart while your kid sits in the car by him/herself.
I don't park in the courtesy spots (even though I'm preggo) because my child and I are perfectly capable of walking.
I might utilize it when I'm 9 months pregnant and it's 95 degrees outside but until then, I'll pass them in the hopes a 9-month pregnant lady or someone with twins or a newborn will get it.
I've seen the spots at King Kullen, Stop and Shop and Babies R Us.

When i know I have a lot of stuff to schlep to BRU to return or that I am going to buy a big item, i always park in stork parking. Sorry, but if you are so pregnant and you can you can still DRIVE to a BRU, you can walk from your car into the store. I spend most of my life schlepping--I live in a 3rd floor walk-up with a one year old, so if that spot is open, I'm taking it.
I have never seen spots for parents with kids.
Edited: wording
So, to make it easier for YOU, you park in a spot designated for pregnant women? That's really rude.....
I'm sorry, but I don't think so. I was pregnant, went through a difficult pregnancy and have no help from anyone but DH who works a lot. I have to do a lot of schlepping all by myself. To the poster who said that she could barely walk when she was 9 months pregnant in August, why would you even consider driving to a BRU? What could you possibly need at that point? I can't possibly imagine being in so much pain and discomfort and saying to myself, "You know, I should really go to BRU right now. I just have to get _________ at this very moment 9 months pregnant and barely able to walk." I always thought "Stork Parking" was cute, but unnecessary. The BRU I go to doesn't allow customers to take carts to their cars so when I have to buy a large item for my child, I absolutely park in the closest available spot.

I never use them as a non parent.
I actually prefer to park as far as possible and walk (Unless it's 20 below or snowing or icy or something) I figure it's the only exercise my lazy arse gets.
Besides I don't like parking near anyone who will ding my doors or let a runaway shopping cart scratch my car. I'm very anal about my car and prefer to park away from EVERYONE.

I am the exact same way. Even if there is a spot right up front near a store, I park where no other cars are parked and do my best to park in an end spot. I never park next to the cart corrals either, it's an invitation for a giant dent on my car.

they are great to have and YES I use them since I was 5 weeks pregnant with DS now I'm pregnant and have a kid so the closer the better!
at BRU you can never get these spots, who doesn't have a kid with them?!
There are a lot of non pregnant people that could use a bit of a walk if you know what I mean. if you are not pregnant, you should NOT be parking in those spots. fat lazy Azz people!! sorry but now I'm annoyed
Opinions that can be expressed without name-calling are usually better received.
I don't understand why someone who isn't pregnant or with a small child would park there... but your comment about people's weight has absolutely no bearing on this discussion.
Last time I checked, not every fat person was lazy and not every lazy person was fat.

isn't the healthiest thing you can do for your unborn child is exercise?
as much as i think those spots are pointless (as prev. stated), i do not park in them. I park in the back because i enjoy walking even in the rain and i am overweight and def. could use the excercise.
But, what about senior parking spots, just because your a senior doesn't necessarily mean your handicapped. Look at dr's offices they sit in their cars waiting for a half hour for a spot up close so that they can manage to get in the office safely whereas a nice healthy pregnant/or parent with kids get the up close spot.
My mother managed fine with taking me to the market with no special spots, my grandparents were fine walking one mile to store with six children or pregnant and i hope if i ever decide to spawn i am just as strong as they were. This way the people who are truly in need of up close parking get those spots.

i honestly think its a bit silly to have those type of spots. I mean if you have a condition that prevents you from walking distances when preggers or when you have kids then get the handicap pass. The only time I feel bad is when you have kids and its pouring out - i will let you have the spot ahead of me if its closer otherwise your kid can walk or rid in the basket.
I think it's actually difficult to get a handicap pass. And for some women, towards the end of pregnancy it is rather difficult for them to walk, but not something that would qualify them for a handicap pass.
I don't think it's silly to provide a spot at a store that is primarily for pregnant women and mothers of newborns, that will make their lives a little bit easier. Also, you have no idea how heavy those infant carriers can be, so having to trek across a large parking lot with one is not always an easy task.

Re: Spinoff to the non parent thread...
But if the store sees it fit to allocate its space that way, that's it. It doesn't matter what we think. (Although I don't use one unless I happen to qualify for it).
In a store, we don't say that an item should be cheaper, so we're taking it and leaving a quarter on the counter--right?
So who are we to say that we'll disregard the parking rules because we disagree with them?
I hate it when people think they're entitled or too important for the rules or law (let alone for common decency, which is what this is really about.)
It reveals so much about them.

I'm not sure I understand the reasoning here either. When I was huge and pregnant I really appreciated those spots because it was not easy for me to walk around too much. Once I had the babies I never parked there, I can walk across the parking lot with my big item in the cart.

Re: Spinoff to the non parent thread...
I saw a man park in the expectant mother's spot (his car pulled in the parking lot in front of us) and he went into a totally different store than it was implied for.
I was 9 months pregnant, and left him a note on his windshield telling him he should be ashamed of himself. I doubt he cared, but it made me feel better to call him out on it-even if by note.
I won't use that spot unless I'm REALLY pregnant and am exhausted.

If the BRU that you use doesn't allow people to take the carts to the cars, how do you think a pregnant woman feels having to carry something to the car? Come on now, it's a courtesy!!!!!
But that's my point! Why, if you are so pregnant that you have trouble BREATHING, would you possibly have any reason to go to BRU? You can have it delivered to your door! I know BRU's S&H is outrageous, but it's worth its weight in gold when and if you are in that delicate condition.
I'm a new Mom and like I said earlier, if I have a lot of stuff to carry into BRU and I am by myself or with my DD (which has happened TWICE in the past year), I will park in the closest spot available. I would not park in handicapped spots because that is illegal and can get my car towed/ticketed.
I'll give an example. DD's birthday is on 12/25. Can you imagine the amount of toys and clothes she received? I am so grateful for them all, but some were duplicates, some didn't fit etc. I love in a small apartment and can't possibly fit all of those toys in my living space and to be honest, I don't want DD having that amount of toys all at one time. My friends and family were considerate enough to provide gift receipts and I went to BRU to return many items for store credit, which I will use at a later date to get her things that she needs. I had about a dozen items ranging from a microphone stand to a shopping cart to onesies that I had to schlep into my car, drive to BRU, take them out of my car and blah, blah, blah...The parking lot was fairly empty...I took the closest spot. It was stork parking. I really don't think I'll be going to hell for that.
And I agree with Kara about the whole fat/lazy name calling thing. That just diminishes your entire opinion/post to me.
Anyway, I'm not looking to fight here or cause drama (sorry folks...) but I do what I have to do to make life work for me. And now I have to go WALK 10 blocks to the pharmacy to pick up my DD's Rx. And then I am going to WALK 8 more blocks to pick up my new glasses and then I am going to WALK home.
Have a nice weekend folks.
Love Y'all!

Re: Spinoff to the non parent thread...
There were definitely days when I was preggo and I went into a store feeling good and walked out feeling like crap. a mile in someone else's shoes can be very different.
I don't usually get upset until the one day a young guy STOLE the spot from me (I was waiting with my blinker). I ended up getting the spot on the other side of him. After I unstrapped my DS, I walked by his car...blantantly looked into his car for a "child"...looked at the sign and looked at my son. When I came back - there was SPIT on my windshield. CLASSY! He was arguing with the girl in the car with him - hopefully she saw that and did away with him for good.

Re: Spinoff to the non parent thread...
Oh- this is a huge pet peeve of mine. We have them (expectant mother and infant only parking) at my supermarket and they were a godsend to me when I was hugely pregnant with #2 while still needing to carry #1 (she was too young to walk while holding my hand).
We also have infant carrier only parking at my gym which was also incredibly helpful (and MUCH safer).
ANYONE who parks there without being OBVIOUSLY pregnant* or having an infant is a selfish, lazy @ss. I'm also talking about those who are newly pregnant- YOU DON'T NEED IT YET. And for those who don't agree with them obviously have no idea why such a courtesy is so helpful.
*meaning, just because you got a + on a pregnany test a week ago doesn't make you eligible.

Re: Spinoff to the non parent thread...
I park in those spots, as well as handicapped spots as I have a permit only when I absolutely need it. And no, I do not go to the mall, BRU or whatnot when I feel bad enough to need those spots. IMO, there is nothing in those stores that are so earth shattering that I need to limp and struggle to get my way into. But that is me.
I am 8 months preggo with arthritis that is flaring and a compressed disc. At times I might need to pick up milk or something else that I can't wait hours for DH to get. I honestly think that is that those spots are for.
If I am not miserable, I walk. I do what I can, because it is healthier and because I love to take advantage of days I am okay to do so, and most of all, since I know those spots are limited, save them for that preggo carrying another infant or who is waddling that day.
I don't think it is my place to judge because you never know how horrible a person feels just because they don't appear to outwardly look it. And using a spot like that when you are preggo does not make you fat or lazy. I use them because my DD is sitting right my lungs and while I am not in horrific pain, I do need things done and a long walk is exhausting.
I do appreciate all of the expectant mother spots and feel that in my stage of the game, they are a godsend! And yes, I've used them at 5 months and 6 months preggo when I am having a hard time catching my breath! However, they are not meant for those without children. JMO, but if there is nothing preventing you from walking, walk and be grateful you can!

Re: Spinoff to the non parent thread...
I'm just curious, for the people that think the spots are unnecessary or find it annoying that they exist - would you be willing to give up your seat on the train/subway for a very pregnant woman? Or would you say "Well, she is able to get to work, she must be okay to stand on the train/subway." I don't know, I just find this world to be a sad place when people can't just extend a courtesy to a pregnant woman without getting annoyed by it. I can't really think of the difference between the two scenarios.... It's just about being charitable to someone who may need a little extra help.

Re: Spinoff to the non parent thread...
I'm glad I posted this thread. The many responses on here show why.
I love the 'idea' of them. BUT IMO THEY DON'T WORK. Since they are not a legal sign, everyone and anyone feels right parking there. I feel it is abused way more than the handicapped parking spot sign that is a ticketable offense. I've noticed the huge SUV's in the low emission parking too. They aren't in a spot that is far away. They are right at the entrance to the Christmas Tree Store. I'm also aware of my surroundings so I wouldn't park in a spot and then notice a sign. The family parking is at a lot of the King Kullens that I go to.
I'm one to park far away from the store because it is the people who feel free to park everywhere have the 'who cares' mentality and will throw open their door and ding mine. When going to the store with my SIL and kids, we park far away.
If I'm not eligible, so I don't park there. Simple concept.
