Teen hit by car this morning
I was stuck in the traffic on my way to work. Just read the update. Prayers for her family:
A 14-year-old girl who was struck by a car and killed in Wantagh Wednesday morning as she walked to school had been helping out her frazzled family by getting herself ready for school each day, but she knew she was not supposed to cross Sunrise Highway alone, her tearful mother told Newsday.
Nassau County police said Brittany Vega of Wantagh was headed north across Sunrise when she was struck by a 2004 Toyota Camry at 6:20 a.m. Police said Vega was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where she died at 6:55 a.m.
The driver, 36, who was not identified, stopped after the accident. There does not appear to be any criminality, police said.
"She wasn't allowed to cross that big road" by herself, her mother, Sandi Vega, said Wednesday. "I was very protective that way."
Brittany's little brother was hospitalized after falling into a fire pit on Labor Day, and their parents had been busy visiting him, Vega said. Brittany had been helping out her parents by getting herself ready for school and out the door on her own, she said.
"Brittany's been such a good girl. She always got up and did the responsible thing," her mother said.
Westbound Sunrise was closed for more than an hour after the accident so investigators could examine the scene, police said. The road was reopened at 8:44 a.m. Two lanes had originally been closed to traffic immediately following the crash. A black-and-white checkered backpack lay on the side of the road after the accident.

Very sad. She shouldnt have been crossing by herself...I dont think I would even feel comfortable crossing Sunrise over there myself.
