Sparing the jumbo quote. Agree with Hofstra. Vaccine is a game changer,. We are coming from behind now, trying to outpace spread. Vaccine production on a large scale couldn't start in earnest until companies got approval, and we didn't have infrastructure for the rollout they wanted initially. But we are learning and establishing inroads and now have time to produce boosters, etc. To outpace this. This doesn't mean that all will be perfect, but imo, the big picture looks bright. We can always look back and bemoan our unpreparedness and the poor leadership of politicians from both parties. Those things are undeniable. We should learn and move forward.
For the first time since this all started I feel hopeful. I think this year will be ending on a much better note than last. We know more now, we have the vaccine and hopefully soon the virus isn't this scary thing to fear but instead, just another virus that we're equipped to handle. I think for the time being we shouldn't let our guard down but brighter days are definitely ahead.
Didn’t you get the vaccine? Or did you just schedule it?
Neither. I am on Day 9 of COVID so I can't get the vaccine now for 90 days. In the meantime, hoping I test positive for antibodies in a few weeks.
I was wondering if you were one of the unlucky people who got it before getting the second dose.
I would be so annoyed if I got the vaccine and then got Covid. I ended up getting it anyway but I think I would hide from the world if I got the vaccine. For me this is why i would get the JJ one if I get the vaccine.
I agree, I'd be annoyed if I was half vaccinated. Are you even protected without the second dose?
I guess the good news is that by the time I can get it it should be easier to get the appt. At least I hope so.
You had COVID? How was it for you?
I had it about a month ago. Honestly, it was surprisingly mild, congestion. But no fever, my asthma was fine. I actually thought I didn’t have it because this is the first time my asthma wasn’t triggered. I’m usually sick for two weeks minimum. I was back to work after a week and that’s because my job made me take off a week. My husband had some body aches, and a slight cough. He was sick longer than he usually is but it was mild in comparison.
My son never got it, I basically ignored him and kept him confined to his room in which he didn’t do any of his school work. This was the worse part of Covid for me knowing he wasn’t doing what he was suppose to and I couldn’t hover over him.
My daughter is being good about her work but she's in 7th, my son on the other hand (2nd gr) thinks he's on an extended vacation. lol I've felt too crappy to care but now that I'm doing better, I'll have to get on him.
Once our fevers broke, it was more tolerable to deal with. Just worried every day we'd wake up and not be able to breathe but thankfully that didn't happen.

I’m tired of all the lectures, the vaccine is out everyone who wants it, go run out and get it. But schools need to be freaking open already full time or by September. Enough already with hiding from this virus and looking for excuses. These kids and families, including myself who has access to resources, are suffering!
Idc about sports, parties, Broadway shows or concerts. I care about my sons development and what this is doing to him over a year later and at this point there is no reason for it.
Eta: good for other states who are using common sense combined with research/science and opening up.
I'm sure the 2021-2022 school year will be a normal. Many districts are already back 5 days even if not full time. September is a long way off and whether you want the vaccine or not, enough other people by then will be vaccinated so hopefully things in the fall are a lot more normal than they are now.
They are already stated that it will not be normal in September. Unless it changes drastically, the districts already know they still need to be socially distanced and wearing masks. So not much is going to change. They are also still going to provide a remote option.

My district has not said anything about the fall up to this point. Everyone is still focused on this school year, it's too soon to make any decisions about next school year.

Exactly what I am worried about, if they still make them distance and don’t allow more kids in the class then September will be the same crap for us.
I just don’t have high hopes for this. I hope my pessimism is wrong and this is not that case. Right now I’m in plan for the worse and hope for the best mode.

The only good thing is I am seeing a lot of articles online about how they are looking into if 3 feet is enough for kids to be distanced at schools. So if they can drop it to 3 feet they can get a lot more kids back in person at once.

Re: Texas is open!
Right now, Connetquot district is most 100% in-person. Monday, the last few grades will be. Parents still have the option of going 100% virtual, but as of the 22nd, we won't have any hybrid classes. I don't know how many are pure virtual, but DS is. His choice, and he's doing well.
We also have a lot of sports going on now, too. We've had very few positive cases in the last few weeks.
Connetquot is not the biggest SD, but it's pretty big (14th biggest of 55 districts in Suffolk County). If they can figure out how to make it work, I'm hoping most of the other districts can, too.

My district is doing the same and we're a big district. They sent back 6th and 12th full time last week. Next week they will bring back 2 more grades (1 MS, 1 HS....not sure which 2 grades) and so on.... My DD also told me they were finally allowed to leave their classroom to go to art class rather than have the art teacher come in . And the funniest one- they are finally allowed to "touch" things in gym (balls, etc) rather than only being allowed to run around or kick things. It's actually sad when you think about it- those 2 little things made her so happy....

Re: Texas is open!
According to the latest state data, of the more than 1.4 million public school students in the New Jersey, nearly 951,000 are attending school either fully in-person or in a hybrid setting while 317,000 are still all remote — including in some of the largest urban school districts in the state like Newark, Jersey City, Camden, Trenton, Paterson and Elizabeth.
33% are not in school at all in the whole state and of the 67% who are attending they are including the hybrid model in there, which, we know in some cases may as well be remote. The bolded is a real problem as I have been saying for months.
Many schools are NOT open or back to normal!!

Texas is open!
I can definitely see the NYC DOE not going back full time in September. There are just way too many students, and my guess is a lot of parents who wanted their kids remote all year will send them back in September. Hopefully they switch it to 3 ft which will allow many more children, but the teachers unions are a real PIA to deal with. I feel like they never want their teachers to have to go back to work.

I am in a DOE teacher group on FB, and what they seem to want is remote until all children are vaccinated as well. I need to make the point that I know MOST teachers are not like this. This is a small group of DOE teachers that are extremists, many in the group go back at that them when they post something about schools staying closed until January 2022 and the government paying all parents their full salary to stay home with their kids until then. It's laughable and I know it won't ever happen. But I do believe Mulgrew will push back on a full reopening in September. He has already said he isn't sure it can happen. What a joke.

I really don't understand the issue at this point with reopening. I get in September there were many unknowns and the consensus seemed to be that schools would be a breeding ground for COVID. But what we've seen is quite the opposite, kids aren't the superspreaders we thought and of the schools that have opened most have stayed open. There really isn't a reason for schools to stay closed come the fall.

I taught for several years and am out of the classroom now. I'm very, very pro teacher and I don't see a valid issue.
Before the vaccine I was extremely sympathetic especially to those teachers who work in poor conditions - tiny spaces, poor ventilation, etc. I've seen some concerning situations in some schools.
But school staff have been offered the vaccine since mid January in NY. They've had time to acquire an appointment and need to get back to their buildings.
Other states have different schedules and therefore teachers probably have valid gripes in places where they were lower on the list.

The sad part of that is all teachers will be vaccinated by then. There's no excuse. Zero
Was just going to ask the same thing. I want to understand the other side of it, but if the teachers have all been offered the vaccine, what is their issue?
I taught for several years and am out of the classroom now. I'm very, very pro teacher and I don't see a valid issue.
Before the vaccine I was extremely sympathetic especially to those teachers who work in poor conditions - tiny spaces, poor ventilation, etc. I've seen some concerning situations in some schools.
But school staff have been offered the vaccine since mid January in NY. They've had time to acquire an appointment and need to get back to their buildings.
Other states have different schedules and therefore teachers probably have valid gripes in places where they were lower on the list.
This is exactly how I feel. I was wondering if I was missing something.
The point that was brought up at one of our BOE meetings is that even though the teachers have been vaccinate, without clear evidence that the yare still unable to spread it, they could still be bringing it home to other family members who have not been vaccinated yet.

But that's true of anyone who works and yet many have continued to work throughout the pandemic. There is no reason for any schools to continue to stay closed come September.

I agree with you but I think even pre vaccine there was a good argument that teachers are one of our most essential workers and needed to take that risk....

I tend to agree. If back in March or April last year they said they had to close Target and the Supermarkets and you can only get delivery, nothing would change in the quality of my groceries and necessities But closing schools DEFINTIELY had a huge impact on the quality of educations our children received.

I totally get that last spring we were flying blind and we really didn't know the risk that classrooms of kids would pose. But at this point, it's clear that schools aren't a breeding ground so I would hope that by the fall schools are functioning more normally.
I'm not knocking teachers at all and I think they are absolutely essential but I also don't think at this point there is a justifiable reason to not fully open up the schools in the fall. Fingers crossed next school year is a better year.

I see. But by September, every adult will have been offered the vaccine. Numbers should be down.

I guess those Texans who haven’t opened a book are doing ok. No bloodbath down there.
