maybe I don't know the whole story, but didn't he get out of his car of his own accord? You are never supposed to get out of your car. There is no reason to. I hate to blame the victim, but that action led to his getting hit.

ITA. It was a tragic accident, but you are NEVER supposed to get out of your car, especially if you are still on the roadway.

That is the first thing I said to myself when I heard the story. Then when I heard that he was only 18, I could only assume that he just didn't know any better. So sad. Chat Icon

So so sad for all involved

So sad Chat Icon did the cop have a passenger in his car? Why was he in the HOV lane?

Cops patrol in the HOV lane.
They don't need a passenger in the car with them.

Right. Considering there is usually loads of traffic, I dont think anyone would expect that a cop car should just sit in the traffic with everyone else....otherwise he/she would get nothing accomplished.Chat Icon

Re: The teen hit & killed by the cop on the LIE..

The deputy tried to swerve and avoid the car and clipped it. He didn't slam into it at full speed. With sun in your eyes, it doesn't take much for that to happen. It is a terrible accident. An inexperienced driver and a blinded sheriff. This is not the first time this has happened, certainly not the last.

I am sure the sheriff is a wonderful person and will never be the same after this accident but I my gut feeling tells me that he may have been distracted.

Regular drivers were able to avoid hitting the car/kid while blinded by sun glare and a sheriff (who is trained to be aware of his surroundings) hit the kid? Again, my gut tells me he was distracted.

I am so sad about this. I keep seeing his beautiful face on the cover on Newsday.

May he rest in peace.

Interesting point.

But my heart breaks hearing that his mom told him to stay in the car. So sad.

Still, I was wondering how many other people avoided the kid. One car gets too close and your mom said stay inside and the fear grabs hold and you run for cover (flight or fight) I wonder how many others just got by him safely enough that he figured he was ok (in his state of fear).

I also wonder how fast the cop was going and I agree he was distracted. He would have no need to 'swerve' from an accident if he saw it. Others didnt need to or it would have been a pile up, right?

Regardless if he's a cop or not, the driver of the vehicle that struck this child seems to have not had his/her full attention on the road, the surroundings and conditions. You see a collision you avoid it or move away. However in LI it seems more than likely to slow down as much as possible to gawk.

Further, as a cop he could have slowed down for the glare, its not like other cars were gonna honk at him or tail gate. You and I would have issues, I would think a cop doesn't need to 'keep up with traffic' per se.

And although I am not saying just BECAUSE he was a cop he is under more scruitny. I am thinking, however, that had a cop been killed, we'd all immediately jump down the throat of the driver for being distracted etc, careless. We are more careful to point a finger at the men/women in blue. I think we do give them a lot of respect.

I dont think those who are questioning him now are accusing him of TRYING to kill the boy, but it seems instead they are trying to tip toe around the fact as a cop, human or not, they need to be AS careful and AS undistracted as they expect us to be.

There has got to be more to this story. However, we'll probably never hear it. And the family (god help me that mother) will forever only know their loss of that child, the plea for him to stay in the car and the knowledge he was taken by such an avoidable incident.

Yeah I feel bad for the human driving the car (as we keep saying "we're all human") at least a little. I feel worse for the family of the child.

Just thats just my own human response as a mom.

I am not going to reply on this but I will say if you are in an accident and unless your car is unable to be driven please move to the side of the road. I know from experiance we do not need to see the accident my job is to fill out the report and let the insurance company decide. I am not trained by eye to look at an accident and tell whose fault iit is.

This is really no ones fault. It was a tragic accident no sense in pointing fingers at either one, I wouldn't wanna be in either of their shoes Chat Icon

Re: The teen hit & killed by the cop on the LIE..

Truly, a tragic accident. That's what it is.

As we know, Newsday doesn't report everything and there is more to the story, evidence, facts, etc.

Just pray for both families and speak to teens about what to do when any type of accident, fender bender, side swipe, occurs on highways and side streets for that matter.
