Re: transit strike...
I'm not saying they don't deserve their raise. But going on strike would leave millions of people stranded and to do it during the height of holiday season is insane. I don't know maybe it's just me but it's like a doctor going on strike in the middle of surgery...you can't just leave people stranded!
This morning I made it into work, what happens if they strike midday, how the heck am I getting home when none of the contingency plans apply to me. Not all plans work for everyone, especially those that don't drive. Taking a cab is going to be a nightmare! the city has enough gridlock on a daily basis. I know i'm not the only one who commutes i'm sure it will crazy for everyone. LIRR and Metro North are not options for everyone...
Why can't they do these talks in the summer.

They went/threated a strike today b/c that is when their contracts expire. In theory this is best time for the union to strike b/c it will have the biggest impact on the commuters. In the summers, it's a lot easier to walk around and perhaps people would be more willing to walk to their jobs from their apartments or from the train stations. Even though it's illegal for these workers to strike, striking is their best bargaining chip with the MTA. The MTA won't automatically accept the union's demands. The corporation is the one with the bargaining power. The union has very little power without the threat of strike. I definitely think it $ucks and puts commuters in a horrible position. I also think the union and workers are taking huge financial risks by striking, but I can't blame them for doing everything possible to get a fair contract.

Re: transit strike...
I wish they would threaten to strike every day.
My commute today was a piece of cake. Everyone stayed home... equaled no traffic on the roads for me.

you could ferry it to Hunter's Point and have DH pick you up. We all have to get to work and get home if a strike happens ... you need to figure out a plan for yourself like all of us do. eta: you could also take the LIRR to Woodside and get picked up.

Re: transit strike...
You're very lucky if your job is going to let you take off, not fire you and continue to pay you for as long as the strike goes on! Heck, if you can swing that, then I say: 'why not?!'

Re: transit strike...
Update
Transit Offer Is Final, NYC Official Says
NEW YORK (AP) -- The head of New York City's bus and subway system said Friday that the contract proposal rejected by labor a few hours earlier was management's final offer.
"There is no more," said Peter Kalikow, chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. "Our offer that is out there is the best that were going to come up with."
There was no immediate response from the union.
Gary Dellaverson, chief negotiator for the MTA, said, "We haven't made a determination about when to certify the existence of an impasse." And Kalikow said of the union negotiators, "We're ready to talk to them if they want." But he said no talks were scheduled.
The union rejection of the contract offer and Kalikow's reaction came after a midnight deadline for a crippling strike passed without any agreement or any walkout. Instead, the transit union's president called for a selective strike against two private bus lines, apparently to start Monday, and moved the general strike deadline to 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

one of two things will happen IMO
either they will continue to talk and this will be resolved by monday
OR
both sides will come to an impasse and it will be a long strike and whichever side cracks first wins. In the end, we lose.

Re: transit strike...
The thing I don't understand, after reading articles about the negotiations is the disciplinary action part. Maybe someone can explain. The union is saying that they want 25% reduction in disciplinary actions taken by the MTA. I don't really get how that is quantified. As I understand it if there are certain rules, and employees don't follow the rules, disciplinary action may be taken. How are they proposing that a certain %age less be filed??

My info on that comes from my dad, and he mentioned that their "rules" are really unreasonable. Ex: bathroom breaks for bus drivers. If they take too many, or take too long, they get a written warning. He said they get punished for really dumb things, in addition to the favoritism and nepotism that runs rampant.
When I was a kid, they used to call the workers who called out sick to make sure they were really home, every hour. If you were at the DR, they called the office to make sure you were there. It was kind of ridiculous- what if you were in the shower when the phone rang? What if you hit traffic going or returning from the DR? If they didn't find you at the right place at the right time, you were written up.
ETA: The way I understand it is they want the MTA to ease up on some of the silly policies so that there won't be so many write ups/disciplinary action.

Thanks for the info. They don't really go into detail with this, in the news accounts of it, but I could see that if certain rules are phased out, that could make up a certain % of the write ups. I just kept wondering where they were getting that percentage from
