*UPDATE AT BOTTOM*. You Can't Imagine What Happened Yesterday at School With My Kindergarten Child!

My mother picked up Chloe from school today, just about 20 minutes before I was due to arrive home. This is what Chloe came home looking like. At that moment my Mom didn't think to march herself into the school for an explanation, she called me flipping out and took this picture to show me. I was not called about this nor was a note sent home acknowledging what had happened! I called the school and was was told the teacher was still dismissing the other children and I asked to give her a message to contact me immediately! Meanwhile, my Mom asked Chloe and she said a boy in her class had grabbed her face at lunchtime (which was three hours prior to dismissal)! I felt like my adrenaline took over because I don't even know how I got up to her school so quickly(I was driving home from Queens, where I teach Kindergarten) but I did! The secretary said she gave her teacher the message and she said Chloe DIDN'T go home with any marks but she'd email me! I flipped my lid! I insisted on seeing the principal who from my experience with her thus far seems great! The principal was fuming, shocked and appalled that nobody (not her teacher nor her assistant or any adult during lunch noticed this! When I showed her the picture she almost fell off her chair and called the teacher on her cell right in front of me and said that Chloe had significant markings on her face, etc, etc and wanted an explanation! She said the teacher still claims she didn't see it and the principal had me email the picture to the teacher and to her. She said a FULL investigation will be done and she'll be in touch with me first thing Monday morning! She actually cried(I believe it to be real) saying she is supposed to as an administrator protect her students and is sick about this. I asked her to go over all the steps that SHOULD have happened which is the same protocol we follow at my school and they sounded exactly like I would have done if were my student! She said this will go all the way to the Superintendent! This little boy has "issues". My heart hurts, DH is flipping but I'm calming down now because Chloe's such a little trooper and is acting fine about it. Of course we need to work with her on telling an adult when something happens so this could have been addressed right away. I have really liked her teacher but how DARE YOU tell the secretary that Chloe didn't go home with marks and her face looks like this?!? Thanks for letting me vent!!

OMG! You were calm in my opinion. I would have wanted a police report filed and on record and that other child removed from situations where he can not keep his hands to himself if he is not one-on-one supervised. This is NOT ACCEPTABLE, and there is no way if this happened at lunchtime or even if it happened at the end of the day that no one noticed this. Your poor girl - I hope she feels better.

OMG. I would be ballistic!!!!!! Your poor girl!!! Why did the boy (and how) did he do that to her precious face???????? You need the full story. What does your DD say happened?

Didn't your poor baby also get bit in daycare if I recall? Poor Chloe.Chat Icon This cannot be overlooked by ANYONE, and this child needs to be addressed if he is a danger to others.Chat Icon

Chloe was in line at lunch she said and she walked passed him and it seems he lunged forward and grabbed her cheek and pinched and scratched it! Chloe's a wonderful child(not just saying that because she's mine) and is always perfectly behaved so I know she has nothing to do with it. She's mentioned this little boy to me and says he gets in trouble a lot! Thank God it looks much better today! I will see what happens on Monday and decide how to precede.

OMG. As a teacher AND mom I'm mortified that this happened! This happened 3 hours before dismissal and the teacher didn't notice it? I can't believe nobody told her. When I pick my kids up from recess I always hear a million stories about what went on, who said what, etc. Ugh. So sorry this happened, but at least principal is dealing with it properly.

This is a HORRIBLE situation. I taught Kindergarten and I do not know how any teacher/recess aide could not notice this. It's not a tiny scratch! I give you a lot of credit for staying calm and doing what you did; you absolutely did the right thing.

As far as this little boy, the principal was out of line saying that he was/has issues. You also cannot demand that he have a 1 on 1 since that is something that would be decided through meetings after testing.

Good luck with everything! I hope that something is done and a protocol is put in place for these kind of situations.

Why do you feel it was out of line for her to say that he has issues? I think that was her way of reassuring me that they're aware of his difficulties and they're being worked on. Of course as a teacher myself I know these things take a long time.

Thank you.

As a teacher, I would NEVER say a child "has issues" to a parent, that child's or someone elses. I find it inappropriate to phrase anything that way when speaking about a child. The principal could have said that they are aware of his behavior and are working on it - like you said. I'm glad that's how you took it, but there are plenty of people that would take the "issues" comment and run with it, especially if their child came home with those marks. If it was my child and I found out the principal said my kid "had issues", you could be sure I'd have a problem with that.

Yes you do need a meeting for a 1:1. HOwever, we had something similar happen with one of our daughters. A boy who was known to have "ISSUES" in her class cut her hair with a scissor. The did put someone in the room for the boy. It wasn't considered a 1:1 since the child I am assuming did not have an IEP HOwever, the district has a responsibility for the safety of the students. Therefore, put an extra adult in the room for more "eyes." They couldn't say it was for the boy, but common sense says it was since my child was not the only one with an issue with the boy. PLus it can take months to officially get the proper support that the boy needed and that is assuming the parents are on board.

I just wanted to add in our case the teacher was not at fault. When you have 24 kindergarten students and you have a child who needs more help, sometimes the one teacher is not enough.

So I will say again. Call the superintendent. It may speed up the process. As a special education teacher for elementary school aged children, sometimes there needs to be a push from parents to get things done.

I completely agree with you. No kindergarten teacher should be in the room alone. It's very difficult to watch that many students at all times; incidents will happen.

My problem was the wording used by the principal (if that is in fact the exact wording they used). I'm hoping that I read it wrong and that she didn't say the kid had "issues" and that it was just the easiest way for the OP to explain it.

And you're absolutely right about them needing a push. Sometimes it is the only thing that gets things done!

Was this definitely from the lunch incident? Maybe something else happened after the lunch incident on the way home? I only ask bc I can't imagine something that huge being overlooked. I also believe that the teacher didn't see it bc she would have nothing to lose by reporting so I can't figure out why she didn't see it. It's pretty big. I also can't believe anyone involved with your daughter at all didn't see this. Glad to hear that the school is taking action and I think this problem child's family needs to get it together.

i had to go back and reread bc I was thinking ...why did your mom leave? My mom also brings home my daughter 2xs a week and I'd be so pissed that she didn't confront at that moment. Too many minutes for people to not know what happened when you come home...Kwim... In any event I still can't figure out how this teacher missed that. Is she blind. My god, it's huge! Who did you say was crying? Teacher or principal? I'd be beside myself if I were the teacher seeing this pics without reporting. Do u know this child?

it sounded to me like grandma was flipping mad and send pics to mom to show her. I assumed she knew from what occurred. Believe me, I could see my mom doing something similar which is why from this post I intend to tell her to never leave the school if there's an issue.

Chloe had a scarf wrapped around her and my Mom took the opposite hand as she walked her to the car. It was as my Mom was pulling away and looked in her rear view mirror that Chloe lowered her scarf that was half covering her face and my Mom saw it. She immediately called me and we tried asking Chloe what happened and little by little she told us. Then when my Mom stopped at a light I had her take a pic and when I saw it not more than 10 minutes later was I at the school, as I was almost getting off my home exit. Yes, thinking back I should have had my Mom turn around and go back to the school with Chloe but I got there as quick as they would, and showed the picture.

I'd be beside myself also! I had such a good relationship with the teacher too, through emails and such. The principal actually was the one that really teared up. I don't know this child, I just heard Chloe a few times speak of him in a way that sounded as of he gets in trouble often.

You Can't Imagine What Happened Yesterday at School With My Kindergarten Child!

I am really shocked that not one adult or even one child said anything about the scratch. It's huge. Is it possible that the scratch wasn't so bad earlier in the day and then just got worse once she got out in the cold? The almost same thing happened to my daughter and her 'bad looking scratch" didn't show up noticeably until we got into the car.

I'm glad the principal is taking this seriously but it has really nothing to do with the other child that scratched your daughter. They obviously do not have the correct adults around the children and she needs to get her staff trained ASAP. Our school has extra aides in the lunchroom and recess for kindergarteners just to keep an eye on them.

I would have to agree with you that the cold may have enhanced it a little but my Mom saw it not more than two minutes after she left the school so it definitely had to be noticeable still.

Dying to hear the update. What was the reason he did this? My dd tells me alot about " cutting" in the cafeteria. She's been pushed a few times for it and I hear this type of crap in the cafeteria. Worst was a kid was choked on lunch line. Wonder what happens in the cafeteria that makes a volatile situation. Maybe the rush, rush.

you and your friends don't know the parents or where they live? I would have to go show mom and dad that face. I think seeing it is like OMG!!! Vs hearing about it. Look at the reactions you are getting just on a site.

You Can't Imagine What Happened Yesterday at School With My Kindergarten Child!

You really have to take the child out of the equation here. Today it was this boy, next week it could be another. The school is suppose to provide a safe environment for all kids and they are not supervising correctly. I would be more concerned that the teacher or aides did not notice a huge scratch on her face. If they don't notice that, what else are they not noticing. I would have the principal talk to the lunch room aides, the classroom teacher and any other teacher she came into contact with on Friday. Also to find out how they are monitoring the lunch room and lines and the playgrounds.
