You really have to take the child out of the equation here. Today it was this boy, next week it could be another. The school is suppose to provide a safe environment for all kids and they are not supervising correctly. I would be more concerned that the teacher or aides did not notice a huge scratch on her face. If they don't notice that, what else are they not noticing. I would have the principal talk to the lunch room aides, the classroom teacher and any other teacher she came into contact with on Friday. Also to find out how they are monitoring the lunch room and lines and the playgrounds.

This.

I am shocked that people are even suggesting hunting down the little boy or his parents.

I get that being an instinct, but really, what is that going to accomplish in the grand scheme of things?

Especially because we DON'T know the situation with the kid/his home life/if services are in place/etc.

For all we know, maybe it wasn't even this kid. The lack of awareness at school is the bigger issue.

in most instances I agree with you, in this situation I dontChat Icon
If some kid hit her, spit on her, made fun of her kicked her I'd say...yeah the school. In this situation she happens to have a pretty huge gash on her face. I think the parents should know. I think the boy needs to be disciplined whatever this may be. Something like this " could" go into a court room and the school wouldn't necessarily b involved. Not really looking to go back and forth just giving my reason for feeling they should let his parents know.Chat Icon

Re: You Can't Imagine What Happened Yesterday at School With My Kindergarten Child!

Of course the parents should know.

But that still doesn't answer the questions that no adults in charge really knew what happened.

This is neither here nor there but DS eats breakfast with a bunch of older kids in the morning before Pre-K.

Once an older boy accused him of spitting on his sister. He came up to DH in the parking lot when he was dropping him off. We investigated with the school and it ended up it wasn't even DS.

It's the school's job to be aware of behavior problems going on with their students, and to follow up accordingly.

ETA: I also feel strongly that the OP needs to stay on top of this so it is followed up on accordingly. I have heard of lots of stories where schools just give lip service and then the problems are never actually addressed.

Re: *UPDATE AT BOTTOM*. You Can't Imagine What Happened Yesterday at School With My Kindergarten Child!

Update:

My Mom brought Chloe in early today as the principal requested and had a meeting with her and Chloe. They talked a lot and she told my Mom she was very concerned how her staff could "miss" this and she will work very hard on re-training the staff. She said she spoke to her teacher again over the weekend and her story is the same that she truly didn't see it.

My Mom is a Therapist (so she is a good person to offer advice and is knowledgable in this area) and had a good heart to heart with the principal about the situation and how they'd handle the child and assure that Chloe would be and feel safe from here on in. She said she was going to get an aide to be with him and of course contact the parents. She said the parents are very well aware of his behaviors and are very willing and eager to help him.

This afternoon Chloe's teacher called me to discuss the situation, apologize and we tried to find a happy medium during the conversation. I told her first and for most what was most important to me was naturally the well being on my child. I expressed my disappoint with her missing this and she listened. I think I was very fair and we ended on a good note.

Some may say I was too easy, some may say I was too harsh. I did what my heart told me to do. Chloe is acting fine and hopefully going forward she will learn to speak up when something happens also I hope this taught her a little bit about tolerance and that all children are different and we have to forgive and move on.

Thank you all who took the time to comment and offer your opinions and advice. Have a good night!

Great update. I think what you did was perfect. Just keep an open dialog with your DD to make sure she is not getting bothered by anyone, the other child included. I'm glad the staff took it seriously.

awesome!!! You did the right thing for sure. You want to keep it on a good note with the teacher and she knows how you felt. Other child sounds like there could be more to his behavior than the avg child so at least the school is aware and the parents are taking the next step with school officials to help

I think the way you handled things is perfect. The teacher should have caught it and I am glad you didn't hold it over her head. We teachers make mistakes too. I am also glad they are getting the boy an aide. People weren't going on a witch hunt when talking about him on the boards. Some children need more supervision then others for various reasons. The mark on your daughter's face was not a "kid" being a "kid" thing. Hope all goes well and this issue is resolved now.

Re: *UPDATE AT BOTTOM*. You Can't Imagine What Happened Yesterday at School With My Kindergarten Child!

What a terrific update.

And for the record with the "witch hunt" comment, since I was a person questioning anyone else notifying the parents besides the school-----

I just think it's important to get all the facts straight and also make sure everyone who should be held accountable, is. Duh, obviously there are kids out there with issues who are not going to do well on their own without extra supports, meds, hell sometimes not even a "normal" school environment.

While it's not totally same thing, I run a day program for adults, many who require oversight and supervision at all times.

Since it's just me I can't humanly watch all of them at the same time, I always make it a requirement that they come with an aide or a natural support to watch them.

Has worked out well because there are too many "what ifs" that can happen otherwise.

I've even seen crazy stuff happen with people who don't require oversight and supervision. If anything, I am hoping for the OP this will put the adults in charge more on their toes.

I think it's often too easy to get comfortable in a classroom/school environment and one's guard can be let down.

Great update and I think you actually helped the other child as well the rest of the students. Hopefully this aide will correct him and teach him the right way to behave with other children instead of just saying "No". His parents should be making sure of this.

I give you so much credit. As a fellow teacher, I would still be going for this woman's throat for denying that it happened. At least initially say you didn't see anything but to outright deny it bothers me! To dismiss your initial phone call and go home, I just can't! Our job does not end when these kids walk out the door and shame on her for not calling immediately! Do they have cameras in the lunch room?? The principal should be checking those to see exactly what is going on with the cafeteria teachers! I am so sorry that happened to your daughter! You definitely set a fine example for her!
