** Update ****Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
Please do not quote
Regualr daycare teacher was not in today. About 30 minutes after drop off my work and personal phones both had missed calls.
In sum, daycare teacher called (she sounded really strange) and told me that she was locked out of her apartment. She asked to borrow $1500 to pay rent. She kept saying please do not tell school I called. Lots of inconsitencies in her story so I doubt its for rent.
I feel very violated (not sure why). If I tell school she might will loose her job. If she keeps her job she will know I told. Either way I will feel awkward. I will question my kids' safety.
If I do not tell, there is always something in the back of my head that will question my kids' saftety.
No win situation..
She is a 50 something year old woman. Maybe she fell on hard times or maybe its a scam. She has been with the school for a year and a half. I do not have a relationship with her beyond, Hi how are you doing.
I am in no way giving her the money. Any advice is welcome.
Please do not quote.
******Update ******
I called school the day it happened in December. Last Friday the daycare fired the teacher. I was not the only family she approached. One gamily kept lending her money and got fed up.
I am glad she is gone.

Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
Just tell her you're sorry you're in no position to lend money.

Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
sad.. and desperate times... Id just say I can't and let it go.. say you're sorry. But no, I wouldn't, couldn't loan her the money. So many people are being put into tough situtations. So sad.
I wake up every morning, glad to have a job and being able to pay my bills.

I agree with this advice. No idea what's going on, and while it's a tough position to be in -- giving her money could make the situation worse for everyone, IMO.

Re: Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
I probably would not say anything and just not lend her the money.
I'm not sure if I would feel comfortable with her watching my child.

Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
That is extremely unprofessional and awkward. I personally don't think I could not tell the school. I would be extremely uncomfortable with that.

Re: Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
omg what a horribly awkward position to be placed in. I am so sorry
I agree with the pps- I would just say something along the lines of I'm sorry but I do not have that money to lend.

Re: Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
Weird!!!
I wouldn't tell the school, but I would tell her that it's highly inappropriate to ask parents of the school she works for for a handout. While you feel for her, you do not have extra money to give anyone at this time and she should contact her family or even the school for help.
wow.

Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
Wow. My first reaction is to think she must be very desperate, regardless of what the situation is. While what she did was inappropriate, I don't know if I'd want to run and tell the school about it either. Maybe she fell on really hard times?
If it were me, I would let her know that I won't say anything to the school so long as she didn't put me in an awkward position like that again. I'm guessing she might have asked other parents too, so someone else may tell the school anyway. Sorry you're in such an awkward spot!

Re: Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
No way would I lend her money. I don't know if I would tell the school though... this really has no bearing on her performance at the job. If you did tell though, she'd probably never know if it was you, because I bet you anything she called other families too.

That's not ok, not in the least bit. I'm sorry you were put in this position. I would probably just tell her no and not tell anyone, but I would always have it on my mind when dropping DC off.

Re: Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
I would not give her the money and I would tell the school. The reason being is to abuse her contact list and ask for the money in my mind means she is in a desperate place. I would not want someone like that watching my child for fear of what they could do when desperate. Maybe it is an over reaction but since that nanny killed those kids over a pay dispute that is where my mind goes - sadly.

Re: Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
talk about awkward. I def. wouldnt loan the money either and i would tell her i dont have it. I was put in a simliar situation with someone i worked with not as much money but i still had to tell them no; i just couldnt risk them not paying me back. I felt completely awful and really bad that i couldnt do it.
im not sure if i would tell the school on one hand i would want to but on the other i would feel even worse if she lost her job she has to obviously be despereate; i would probably try to feel out other parents to see if they got a call and see what they did.

Re: Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
This is one of the most bizarre things I have ever heard about, especially since you say you have no relationship with her.
I would definitely say something to the school. It is completely inappropriate - if you don't have a relationship with her then she used school records to get your phone numbers.
She is certainly not thinking clearly and I think the school should definitely be notified.

ITA - I would not feel comfortable with her watching my dc anymore. Obviously something is going on in her life and her judgment is totally off.

50 year old woman needs money to pay her rent! come on!!
I would not be okay with this at all!!! We pay a lot for daycare. All I would be thinking about is what does she really need this money for. I would want to tell the school but I'm not sure how my dh would want to handle it.

Wow - so bizarre. I would prob ask other parents if she's asked them as well. And I would definitely report her. She could be on drugs or something, and should not be around children.

This. If you had a relationship I might let it go even though it's still weird. The fact that you barely know her means her judgment is scarily off from normal and I'd be afraid for that to present itself in other ways.

I agree. There is something not right there and I wouldn't be able to shake the feeling if I didn't tell.
Good luck

Re: Daycare Teacher Called me to Ask to Borrow Money
Do you have the contact information for the other parents? Would you be willing to send out an email bcc'd simply asking if anyone else received a phone call from one of the employees at that school? Then see if anyone responds. If she's contacted other parents, then I would go as a group to the school.
eta, nevermind, saw you reported it.
