Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem
I tutor elementary kids and have a teaching degree but this type of math is new to me.
The question said to break apart ones to make a ten. This is an example of one of the problems...
26+8
So I think I did this right...
8+2=10 26-2=24 24+10=34
Am I right, is that what the question was asking to do?

Re: Can anyone help me out with a math problem
Yes, I think it would be broken out as:
24 + 2 + 8
24 + 10 = 34
My DS is in 1st grade and they are doing something similiar now.

I think this is correct. My 1st grader is doing the exact same thing and we have no idea how to help him with his homework. And his teachers tells me it only gets worse.

But it says to break apart ones to make a ten so the 8 is a one so that would become a ten...ones to a ten right?

What is the purpose of this "math" ? To teach analytical skills ? I'm old school and don't have children. I have yet to figure out what purpose learning trigonometry and calculus have in my life now.

Re: Can anyone help me out with a math problem
That is extremely ridiculous.
I just recently had a discussion with our first grade teacher about why the powers that be feel the need to create brain damage. WTF does breaking into "ones" mean? Just carry the frickin one and be done with it! Its worked for thousands of years and guess what, it is still correct!

Math was my favorite and best subject, but i am scared to death trying to help dh with his math homework. Why are they teaching it that way. It's ridiculous.

I thought this was it too.
I *think* the idea is it is easier to identify what numbers can make 10s...(just a guess though on my part.)

Umm.. This actually makes sense to me. Breaking the ones into a ten so that only tens are left to add..
I'm guessing its to show that ones (any single digit number) given with other ones can be added to simply the addition into just adding tens instead of a series of ones.
But im just guessing.. i have 2more years before I tackle this.

Re: Can anyone help me out with a math problem
Yup, my DS is in 1st and that's how we've been doing it.
He has also come home with algebra on his homework. Last month one question was:
If we know that 2+3=5, then 2= _ - _ He was so confused, 6 year olds don't have the ability to reason that out yet. I wrote a letter to the teacher who said that she agreed and was taking it to her supervisor.
My 2nd grader is learning to add and subtract 2 digit numbers. Instead of having them stacked so they can carry the numbers easily, ie - 22 + 11 --------- 33
They are all written 22+11= I think it's so much more confusing this way. Let them learn the basics before adding an additional layer to it.

I heard that they need the ability to do math 'sideways' if you will because that is how you would enter it into a scientific calculator. By learning to recongize and handle it in this format it makes the order of operations later on easier to incorporate.

Re: Can anyone help me out with a math problem
Just came back from tutoring, I was wrong. He said it is like this...
26+8
20+6+8
Then why does it say break apart the ones to make ten? I guess we took the ones out of the 26 so take away 6 ones to make it two tens...20...then add the 20 with the 6 we took away before to the 8?

Hrm.. Neat!
So 26+8 becomes 20+6+8 but does 6+8 (which is 14) become 10+4? Then its 20+10+4? How far do you take it?
Sounds like fun.

This is supposed to be clearer than teaching the kids to just carry the one?

The "make A ten" had me doubting myself since technically it's two tens. Break apart the ones so they are separate from any tens. Add the ones digits together separately since then it becomes a simple math fact they should know (6+8) and adding the answer to a multiple of ten should also be a simple addition sentence (14+20).
I get what they are trying to teach them so they can do it mentally, it's just all the wording that is so confusing. They should include an example so the kids (and adults) get what they mean. Or just let them add it any way they want!
