Re: Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem

Sounds like they are introducing regrouping. 26 + 8 is the same as 2 tens + 6 ones + 8 ones.
6 ones + 8 ones = 14 ones or 1 ten and 4 ones, that ten is then added to the 2 tens so the total is 3 tens and 4 ones or 34.

I teach 3rd and we are using a new program this year where they use that term "breaking apart".

Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem

why can't you just teach that 26+8=34?

seriously? i took years of advanced math in college, on an honors level, and this is bologna

i had issues though with math when i was in middle school, because i could do the math in my head and they said i couldn't possibly be doing it all in my head

My son is in 1st grade and they make 10's boxes. So I think he's learning it as:

26+8=

[10][10][6] + 8

then you fill in the rest of the 10 box that has 6 in it already by adding 4 more, then cross off 4 from the 8

[10][10][6+4] + [8-4]
[10][10][10] + [4]

30+4=34

Got it!

If it is Go! math, it works like this:

37 + 8

Turn the 7 into 10 by taking ones from the 8
(37+3)= 40
Now you have 40 and 5 extra = 45

Representing this with pictures of 10s & ones makes it easier to see.

Let's remember to thank our state legislators for mandating Common Core Math to be implemented all at once, with every grade, instead of gradually, beginning with kindergarten, and moving on up each year so that children get the solid foundation they need before they have to tackle more difficult Core Math topics.

Re: Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem

I find this utterly ridiculous. Why can't kids today learn adding the way we did - this new way sounds confusing and illogical. As if people go around thinking about numbers this way. As for it being about making it easier to punch the numbers in a scientific calculator, even more ridiculous. 1st, the overreliance on calculators is part of the reason why kids can't do math anymore and 2nd, if you need to make punching numbers into a calculator easier than it already is, we obviously leave much to be desired when it comes to educating our kids.

Yes, I think it would be broken out as:

24 + 2 + 8

24 + 10 = 34

My DS is in 1st grade and they are doing something similiar now.

Just came back from tutoring, I was wrong. He said it is like this...

26+8

20+6+8

Then why does it say break apart the ones to make ten? I guess we took the ones out of the 26 so take away 6 ones to make it two tens...20...then add the 20 with the 6 we took away before to the 8?

I have NO IDEA what you are talking about Chat Icon

I teach 1st grade and sometimes I look at the lessons I need to teach and say W TF?! It's so much more complicated now. Often i feel they are trying to make them run before they can walk!Chat Icon

Re: Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem

This is a first grade lesson i will be teaching in bout 2 weeks
It is also a standard for first grade.

Imo this is not developmentally appropriate for 6 yr olds

i am a high school math teacher and the way this is displayed and shown to first graders is a crime. they are going to grow up hating math!! (more than some of them already do)

edited to add that this is in fact the way i do the math in my head. however when put down on paper and shown to first graders its downright scary.

This guy is funny on this topic - you can skip to the 4:44 mark if you don't have time to watch it all.

Update I was wrong! Can anyone help me out with a math problem

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. No wonder Math for Elementary Teachers was my worst class in college. I ended up switching majors because of it!

O m g I thought partial sums was ridiculous but that makes sense in comparison! I'm having a hard time following this and I teach second and although math is not my strong suit and I know math facts...this takes longer and doesn't really seem to benefit...seems more confusing! Oy!
