Re: What are your thoughts on this - children and religion

Dh was raised catholic and I was raised born again christian. Neither of us liked the churches we were raised in. After getting engaged we began going to a methodist church. No one in either family is methodist. My parents freaked and DH's parents are still confused that DH is not catholic. lol

In my family religion none of the children make sacraments and all of DH's family is catholic. DD and future children will be baptized and make confirmation. Yes, this is diffrerent than ANY tradition in either family. But, to us, the most important part is having a relationship with God that WE are happy with and works for OUR family. We look forward to church every sunday and its a big part of our lives. Church was always important to me even though I did not agree with my upbringing but DH initially had little desire to go but went bc we needed somewhere to get married. In the end I have seen so many changes in him and now he has a greater belief and faith than me at times! You need to find the right fit for you bc things changed when we did.

If you have found something that is meaningful to you and your family, that is what is important. Just about 9 years later, we still get comments from both sides about our choice but I really try my best to brush it off because I have sooooo much more faith now than I ever did.

I think it is important for parents to impart their beliefs on their children - not the beliefs of their families. I think parents should have their DC follow whatever religion they follow (if they are religious). As they get older, if they want to explore another religion or have questions, and you're okay with it, explain what you can and let them try other religions. If they decide as adults that they want to make their sacraments they can always do so. I don't believe in receiving the sacraments just because its always been done that way.

We go to church weekly. My DS goes to Catholic school and will receive all his sacraments. When he is an adult, should he choose a different religion that is his business and I would not stand in his way. However, as a child I would educate him on other religions if he asked but would not allow him to switch. That is just me. I feel he is a child and I make the decisions for him. I want to give him a direction and a strong religious base - my and DH's beliefs. If he chooses something else when he's an adult so be it.

Nope- would never leave the Catholic Church.

Have you tried a different parish before going to a different direction? I lived in a few different cities and found that different parishes had different cultures. I grew up in a very "strict " one that I now see could be a little stodgy to a new member.

I went to Catholic School and love the Catholic church. If you are torn, in addition to seeking out a different parish, you can also call the church and tell them how you are feeling and I'm SURE they would reach out to your family and offer you many ways to help your family to feel more connected to the church community.
