SPR: What are your thoughts on gay couples having children?
Just curious. I have been hearing of this more and more lately.
ETA: I just wanted to add that I have no problem with it as long as they can provide a stable and loving environment, the same I expect from a heterosexual couple who chooses to have a child.
My only concern is for the child as they grow. Kids can be cruel and I can see kids who have two mommy's or two daddy's being made fun of but I do think this is becoming a more common thing. I am sure years ago when divorce wasnt as common kids were made fun of if their parents were getting a divorce.

I have no issues with it at all- I see too many kids who are in crappy situations, unwanted. I know this is a generalization- but considering what gay couples often have to go through to get kids- I figure they would be very good parents.

I think it's far better for a child to grow up with parents who are role models for how to love, care for and respect one another, regardless if those parents happen to be a same-sex couple or a heterosexual couple.
I support it 100% provided the couple is ready and willing to love a child unconditionally and accept all the responsibilities that come with it. I'd give the exact same caveat for a straight couple.
I've heard some terrible things said about what supposedly happens to kids who grow up with gay parents, and it breaks my heart.  There are plenty of people out there who are parents who should never have become parents. Denying someone who would be a great parent the opportunity to have that experience, based purely on their sexual orientation, is disgusting.

i feel that gay couples should have the same rights/allowances as anyone. it makes me ill that people that are in love are not 'allowed' to be married & have the same rights as everyone else.
eta: for clarification (same rights meaning have children).

I see no reason why a gay couple can't provide as much of a stable loving home as a straight couple.. Heck, with some of the families I encounter I have no doubt that they could provide a better home!

We have several friends who are gay, in committed relationships (many are married in MA and Conn) and they are great parents. We know them very well.
IMO, sexual orientation has as much to do with raising children as race, ethnicity, religion, or gender.... exactly nothing to be exact
The most important factor in raising healthy, well-adjusted children, is a loving, stable, nurturing family structure... sometimes the healthiest structure is a single parent, sometimes it is a same sex couple.
My DH and I fully value all types of families

I'm all for it. Lord knows there are straight couples out there that probably shouldn't have kids  . To discriminate b/c of sexual orientation is terrible.

I know several same sex couples. Some with kids...some without...
All I know is....
The ones that have children...
Love their kids just as much as those of us who are in "traditional" relationships....
That's all that matters to me...

If they are a couple who love their children, if they are a couple who raises them with good values and morals, if they are a couple who sets a positive example and takes great care of the children, I could not care less what their status is. They could be gay, straight, single, purple, whatever.... as long as they are taken care of and loved.
We have friends of our family who are 2 men in a committed relationship. They have a son who is probably 2 1/2 right now. They conceived him by having one of the fathers donate sperm, they got an egg donor and a separate surrogate mother. It's amazing to me what they went through, but now they have this wonderful little boy who is loved. I think it's great!

Im all for it, under any circumstances, even if they are down and out. Down and out straight couples have the right to have a family (not that they should if they cant provide) but still, its a human right, so the same should go for gay couples.
In fact, Im so for it, that I have a few gay friends and if they ever wanted to have a family, I would be a surrogate for them if they ever needed one.
I have no concerns for the childrens future either. Kids get picked on for lots of things, who is too say if their parents were straight, they wouldnt be picked on for someone else. The world isnt all roses, unfortunately, but it should not prevent people from having families if they want them.

I completely agree with this. In the 2 years Jeremy has been in school (he is 4), he has had a 2 mommy family and 2 daddy family. Truth be told, I think he was a little jealous of the little girl that got to have 2 daddies .
In all seriousness though, I am so glad that he has already been around this. I can only hope that it will show him that there are all sorts of families, some that have 2 mommies or daddies, and even some that only have 1 parent
