What do you plan on using for Birth Control after your baby is born?

I've been thinking about this lately for some reason. I hear so many stories of people being utterly shocked at getting pregnant so fast after having their 1st baby- when they weren't even trying.

I know we are probably only going to have one- and if we do decide to have another I would want to wait at least 2-3 years anyway.

I never used BC before- we did the good old pull and pray- and it worked apparently because the first time we didn't (with OPK's and good timing) I get pregnant.

But I don't want to take that kind of chance anymore.

I am thinking I don't want to go on the pill- at my age I don't think it's the safest bet.

Anyone ever use the Mirena IUD?

I really don't want to use any type of hormone BC. I was thinking maybe a diaphragm, but I am still unsure.

Re: What do you plan on using for Birth Control after your baby is born?

I am glad you asked this-I would x-post to parenting too.

I would like to use the Mirena IUD as we are not planning for #2 until Miss Bean is about 3. Due to medication I will wind up back on at some point after she is born, I want to find the most mindless BC out there with the highest success rate, as if God forbid I got PG on the meds, I would have to terminate Chat Icon

IUD - preferably non-hormonal, but we'll see what my OB recommends.

After my 1st I went back on BCP and got pg while on them.

So this time around I'm going to go for the IUD.

Sorry to hijack-but does anyone know if the non-hormonal IUD has as high of a prevention rate? I would prefer that!

Re: What do you plan on using for Birth Control after your baby is born?

My friend just went on the Mirena IUD after YEARS of BCP and she's happ with it. Had a lot of cramping and some spotting when she first got it, but she likes it now.

My other cousin used a non-hormonal IUD and she liked that. But said perods were very heavy and painful.

I need something with hormones as I have PCOS, so I am open to discussing Mirena with my dr. I never had an issue with BCP (was on it for 5 years), so I may just go back to that.

I am sooo worried about getting PG right after I give birth. Dh jokes about it, but I am adamant about waiting 2-3 years.

I'm probably going to be going with the IUD but not still debating on the Mirena (hormonal) vs Paraguard(non-hormonal) And when it's ready to come out I'll hope to have convinced DH to get a vasectomy!

Yeah the hormones scare me- not sure if Mirena is hormonal or not
I was thinking a diaphragm too- I just wonder how effective it is.
I will ask my OB when the time comes I guess...

same with me, I have NO choice. I have some genetic clotting disorders which will prevent me from taking any hormone type BC Chat Icon

however, we will probably just play it safe (condoms) between this baby and the next. We want them only 2ish years apart and I would rather not begin BC only to come off and ttc again. Chat Icon

Re: What do you plan on using for Birth Control after your baby is born?

I think about this too. I am scared if we just use condoms we will end up getting pregnant. I really want to avoid anything w/ hormones. Never liked how the pill effected me. Before getting pregnant I was off any type of birth control for 4 years or so. I guess when the time comes I will have to weigh my options w/ the OB. I like the idea of the IUI so I have to do some more research.

For about a year I used a combination of sleep deprivation and resentment. It worked magnificently well. Chat Icon

I can see that coming into play in my home as well... and it's hormone free. (Unless you count the raging hormones of the new mommy right?) Chat Icon

I am so concerned about this. I was thinking I could do a BCP that is safe while breastfeeding so that I can do that immediately after getting AF post pregnancy.

Are you even more fertile after baby regardless of being on BCP??? I am not planning on #2 for at least 2 more years!!!

I thought you could go right back on BCP??

Re: What do you plan on using for Birth Control after your baby is born?

We don't know yet.

All I know is tht I'm turning 35 next Dec. and I don't really want to be on anything hormonal. Howevver, in the past I took BC not only to prevent pregnancy but to regulate my cycle.

DH would like us to have another baby right away...he jokes about me being preggo next Christmas. I would like to wait a little bit longer and have my kids be at least 2 years apart.
