What is so great about front load washers?
In the market for a new washing machine. We currently have a top loading machine. Is it worth it to get a front loading washer? What are the pros and cons?

We have front loaders and I don't think there is anything great about them lol.
We have them stacked in an upstairs closet so we needed them - we are on our second washing machine in 5 years.

Re: What is so great about front load washers?
When I was married we had front loaders. Supposedly you use less water and it moves the clothes around better than a top loader. I didn't care for it.
ETS: When we moved into a new house we bought a top loader without the agitator. It held a lot of clothes and I liked that if I needed to add to the load I can open the top.

I've had both and I much prefer a top loader. My parents just bought the top loader with the little rinse sink on top and it's amazing.

Re: What is so great about front load washers?
I think it's easier to reach in vs reach down. I wanted a front loader but was talked out of it
We have young kids and a cat and didn't want to leave door open to prevent mold. Also didn't want to have to wipe out machine/ clean it due to mold. I also like to be able to interrupt to add in a sock or something I realize missed it on the way to the washer
Cost was lower for top loader and then we didn't need the platforms (I'm tall, platforms would be a must)
I got top loader Samsung and its massive. Had it about 9 months and I love it!

Re: What is so great about front load washers?
OK, I'm gonna go against the masses here. I LOVE my front loaders! Have had both LG & now Electolux (2 diff houses). I have the largest capacity size, can easily wash bulky things like comforters. After the wash cycle, clothes are so wrung out that they are practically dry, so cuts down on dryer time. To me, its like the difference between a flip phone & a smart phone..would never go back. But yes, I will admit, if I miss an item like a stray sock I can't just "add it in".

My MIL hates hers. I also have one and it's so-so. It gets mildewy smelling sometimes.

Nothing! I HATE mine. Clothes get stuck and ripped, half the time there is a stench I can't get rid of, and I can't fit as much. I miss using a top loader. We had to stack due to limited space so I'm stuck until I buy a bigger house.

I have LG front loaders that I have absolutely no problems with. No weird smells... I can add in laundry after I've started it... And the clothes are wrung out so well that the dyer doesn't have to work as hard... I'd get another in a heartbeat. Maybe I just got lucky with my model...

I feel like people prefer top loaders but we just bought LG front loaders to stack in our upstairs laundry room. Hopefully we like them...

I have the same capability with my top loading Whirlpool Cabrio. You can still wash tons of bulky stuff, and clothes are very dry as well when coming out of the washer.
Love my top loader and wanted nothing to do with a front loader and all the upkeep they need. All I do is leave the lid open to dry it for an afternoon and I can close the lid if I want. Done.

This is us too! We've had ours (LG also) about 5 years now and no problems or complaints. No mildewy smell. I do dry the rubber seal but it honestly takes an extra 30 seconds and I have a towel on top of the machine used strictly for that. I leave the door open.
I'm always amazed by how much I can fit in there. Lots of towels, multple large sheet sets, comforters, heavy blankets, all with no problem. And clothes really does come out without much water left.
Nothing has ever ripped or been damaged. The only thing that ever happened was when my DS1 was a newborn, his socks were so little that they'd sometimes get stuck in the seal. Called LG and they said it was too fast a spin cycle for such small items. No big deal. He grew and his socks got bigger, lol. And I do add things a couple of minutes into a cycle, the machine will stop and unlock.

Re: What is so great about front load washers?
I bought new Samsungs recently. I got the top load washer with the built in sink. Its enormous. I had an old GE that was the largest model at the time. This can fit my largest comforter with room to spare. I didn't want to leave the door open or worry about a smell in a front loader.

nothing! water gets stuck and they smell, you can't stop a load once you start it if you need to add something, etc.
we have an LG top loader with no agitator, love it.

Re: What is so great about front load washers?
I think they were pushed heavily by marketers and designers on consumers as a way to get them to spend more money. I don't know anyone who actually owns one that loves it. I have an agitator less top load and it fits all of our comforters easily. I would never get a front load because of the smell. Mold, necessity to keep it open, and the fact you can't add to the load. I also think the pedestals are a complete money maker add on for manufacturers.

Re: What is so great about front load washers?
We were told they use less water and my parents love the one they have so we went with the same ones. You do have to leave the door open when not in use to allow it to dry out and not get moldy smelling, which doesn't bother me. What does bother me is when I have to move it to the dryer, things are always dropping out onto the floor...drives me nuts! I think if I had a choice again I would go top loader. I love the new one with the sink feature, so cool!!

I have never had my own washing machine, but my co-op has front loaders & my delicates bag has gotten stuck & ruined bras multiple times. Now I have to hand wash them which I hate.
What is it about front loaders that makes them smell? I haven't noticed it with ours.

Re: What is so great about front load washers?
I think they're supposed to save water and be more gentle on the clothes. I have never had an issue with mine smelling . . . We leave the door open and it's fine.
eta- We've had ours almost 5 years and it's never ruined any articles of clothing (and I throw EVERYTHING in the washer).

Re: What is so great about front load washers?
I have a Kenmore (I think? it was a top-rated model from sears).. it's a top loader, no agitator and I can get my king size comforter in it and sometimes too much stuff (I didn't upgrade my dryer too, as that is still working fine.. but can't handle a full washer load)...
I am only confused about using pods in the top loader, but I am nothing but thrilled with it.
HOWEVER, if you are short like me.. sometimes I need a stepstool to reach the bottom socks, or stand to the side, where there is a little lower lip to grab stuff. That part is annoying, but being short, life has lots of annoyances, it's not the product. it's me. :)

we have a Kenmore and I LOVE it. Yes, you have to keep the door open, and make sure you clean it once a month. You are supposed to run bleach through it once a month and put on wash cycle.

Re: What is so great about front load washers?
I've had front loaders by Maytag, LG, and Whirlpool between a house here and a house in FL. Never had an issue with mildew smell and I never leave the door open nor dry the rubber seal after use.
They all clean much better than my top loader Whirlpool. My LG is probably the nicest of the three.
My top loading Whirlpool sucks with towels. It uses a lot more water than a front loader and if the towels get too soaked and shift to one side of the drum the washer will start bouncing around and it will interrupt the cycle with an overload error. Pain in the azz. My front loaders never do that.
