My parents are old-school Italian, we barely got any info from them.

ehhh, maybe 12 depending on the kid, or sooner depending on what I hear about what's going on in the schools. unfortunately, even at 12 most kids have heard alot and most of it is not correct info.

Well, I did it when my stepdaughter had hickies and bite marks all over her neck a few months ago at age 17....

I think ideally you start young and build on it.

My family didn't talk about sex. All I knew was that so much of it was dirty and you only do it when you're married or you will go to hell.

FH's family had a better approach. They didn't believe in pet names for body parts, and were always pretty frank with their children. I don't know if they ever had "the talk" but Fh can remember his dad pulling out a playboy to show him a naked woman and tell him it's no big deal and it's not an object, etc.

I think definitely by 5th grade you need to make sure they understand about diseases, periods, etc, all the mechanics, but none of it should be completely new to them. They should have heard some of it before even if they didn't totally understand.
