People don't follow the rules because either:
A) they don't watch the news or read a newspaper and therefore don't have a clue about the odd/even day rationing OR
B) they think they are entitled OR
C) they think the laws apply to other people.
Based on the guy yelling at you, I think his problem was either B or C.

What I don't understand is that the OP reported it to the attendant and didn't confront the guy who was getting gas when it wasn't his day. Isn't that what everyone was saying yesterday's OPs husband should have done???  gotta love LIF inconsistencies.

Or, D) there was no line so he figured it was ok to swing by and fill up quick ..
honestly, I probably would have done the same if I needed gas and there was no line!

I mean what if this poor, blind, diabetic, single dad of 12, who is also a first responder, a doctor, a lineman for LIPA, and the second coming of Jesus, reallllly needed gas?

There were NO lines today and tomorrow so it is working so I would really not care if someone did not have the correct plates unless there were a ton of people on line.
This is why there is such a problem. Everyone needs to relax and realize they don't need to have a full tank every.single.day and there is not a lack of gas. Just a lack of common sense and they need to stop doing some things they did before (as I heard the malls were packed this weekend).

Right. In every possible situation known to mankind, there can be a "what if." Diabetic, case of diarrhea, whatever. Still gotta follow the rules. OK, the diabetic can get gas on an odd day when he has an even plate - can he also go through a red light?

I don't have a problem if there was no line, but yesterday I was in my even car and saw a few lineless stations and did not pull in.
But I do "scold" drivers when I'm out on the roads running and they roll through stop signs.

I would have been pissed if I was that guy trying to get gas. I'm sure he saw there was no line and figured it was best to get it then instead of waiting till tomorrow. The gas supply is getting much better each day not worse, I wouldn't have said anything and I sure wouldn't have gotten myself so upset by it.

If even #ed cars that passed the station saw no line and decided to get on line along with the odd cars there would be lines all over again! The reason rationing is working is because most people ARE following the rules. I don't understand when people think they are above the rules that everyone else has to follow.

There wasnt a line but thats not the point...the rules are there for a reason he should have gotten gas yesterday or get it tomorrow...he isnt better than anyone else who has to wait for their day
If there is no line, why should the gas station have to turn away a sale? I don't see a problem with it, if there is no wait. There are bigger things in the world to get upset over.
Seriously! I have better things to do with my time than scope out license plates to tattle on strangers at a gas station that has NO line.

I really doubt it. Stations have power back. People have power back, thus they don't need gas for their generators, and the general panic of "I need gas now" is gone.

Eta: who knows the guys situation also. That's why I wouldn't judge. How do you know if he lost his house and has no where to go or maybe he wasted his gas trying to help in one of the deeply affected areas. Maybe his family lost everything and he wasted gas trying to help them. I could never judge anyone during this difficult time because you just don't know. Plus there are way worse things going on out there. I could care less about someone filling up gas when there was clearly no line. People lost their homes, their memories, their belongings. IMO this is so trivial compared to what others are going through right now.

Me too. I am even and need gas and I passed some gas stations with available pumps. But I'm too nervous about breaking rules and would be too embarassed if someone said something to me or I was denied gas.

On a related note, I live in NC and we have been planning for months to drive up to NY for Thanksgiving on Friday. We don't know how we are going to do it though because Friday is an even day and our Jeep is an odd plate, and we would need to be able to make it all the way through NJ, the city and to East Moriches without filling up (since NJ has the even/odd system too). We don't know if we can make it, and I am stressing about it (we will be traveling with a 14 mo and two dogs)! We might see if we can borrow my parents' car because it is an even plate. So you never know what was going on with that guy.

Gas rationing is not a law it's a plan. It's completely unenforceable....people are following the plan for the greater good but the "plans" were put into place by each county / mayor. It's not a NYS law.

By me there is still no gas in most stations and long lines so I really hope people follow the odd/even rule. IF there were NO lines maybe I would feel differently but we are still waiting an hour around here WITH this rule, so if you are an odd on an even day get your ass off line lol

Honestly, if there is no line, I could care less what someone else is doing. I got gas today and pulled right up to the pump, no line at all. And I also passed a few stations without lines. It's not worth it to me to get into a fight with someone over gas. Not my place to enforce the rules.
i was on line for gas yesterday and some people were turned away by the cop there because it wasn't their day. later on at night, when i was returning home, i saw several open gas stations, with no lines. if it was the wrong dfay to get gas, but there was no line, it wouldn't bother me if you came to get gas, just my opinion

I just don't understand what the issue is.
Unless you go through a FULL TANK every single day, why can't you just wait until the next day?
If you are running low and it's your day- GO GET GAS.
Don't wait until you are on fumes on a day that isn't your day.
It takes 2 seconds of planning.
Oh look it's my day to get gas- I have 1/4 tank, let me go get it.
What is so hard about that?

this happened to me on Saturday when I got gas, i went in to pay and the cashier asked the guy in front of me what his plate ended in and he said "odd, but i need gas".. the cashier said ok, and let him get gas anyway. then he asked me what my plate ended in when i went to pay, and i was thinking "well what does it matter anyway?" ha oh well, i really didn't make a big stink about it because there wasn't a long line.
