I was sleeping- it was great. My bottom 2 were impacted and my top 2 never even came in yet but he took them anyway.

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction - awake or put to sleep?
I was put asleep both times, b/c both times my teeth were turning and going into my jawbone. (I literally had no room for my wisdom teeth to go, so therefore they were turning into my jaw)
I would recommend being put out, b/c you don't have to watch what they are doing and you wake up with ice on your face.
eta: the first time I had only one taken out and the second I had two...my last tooth never developed, so its never going to be any trouble
You'll be fine!!!

I was asleep but had a bad reaction to being put out (I woke up during ankle surgery too).
But there is no way I would ever want to be awake no matter how bad a reaction I had. Knock me with a mallet to put me out if you have to!
I woke u p, too, but h onestly that's fairly normal. It's NOT general anesthesia for wisdom teeth extraction (except in VERY rare instances where you go into the hospital for it, you MAY get general anesthesia). It's IV sedation. While MOST people are put out completely by it, there is always a chance that you will wake up and/or be lucid (though loopy) the entire time.
People who are sensitive to or need more anesthesia than others (me or e.g., red heads) are more likely to "wake up" (be lucid or have lucid moments) while under the IV sedation. However, MOST people are asleep for the whole thing.
I've never had general anesthesia, but did wake up during wisdom teeth extraction (and promptly went back out again). Dentist said it's extremely rare, but does happen. I woke up, but felt NO pain (they also still use novacaine). I'm not scarred by it, I promise!
I'm not saying this to scare you. You've got like a 99% chance you'll be totally out for it. (And you won't feel any pain if you do wake up. They also give you novacaine.) I'm just giving fair warning.

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction - awake or put to sleep?
Awake, but mine were not impacted. I had all these images of the doctor tugging too, but they have this clamp that literally breaks your tooth and then they take it out in pieces. It was a piece of cake for me. My dentist advised me against sleep saying you could have a bad reaction and it really ruins you whole day and someone needs to drive you home and be with you. The day i got mine i went to work, it was like getting a cavity filled.

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction - awake or put to sleep?
All of my baby teeth had to be extracted and I was asleep for all of them.
Same for my wisdom teeth (2 were impacted). I had all 4 done at the same time.
Just wake me up when it's over!

I was asleep for all 4. If I could, I would be put to sleep for a regular cleaning. I hate the dentist!

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction - awake or put to sleep?
I had BOTH. I was put out but started to have a bad reaction to being put under, so I was woken up and wide awake for the last tooth.
BAAAAAD- the sound of cracking bone is permanantly burned into my brain forever.......

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction - awake or put to sleep?
awake, one impacted. not bad at all, and i believe they are more gentle when you are awake for it (therefore less swelling and bruising!). i hate coming to from being asleep, so i would much rather be awake. the whole thing is over in about 5 mins per tooth, and since i didn't have to wait for anything to wear off i could leave immediately--the other people had to wait an additional half hour or hour to come to.

Awake - All four at the same time AND I drove myself home!!
**I didn't know I was getting them taken out that day until I got there - my dentist does not communicate well

I had two impacted teeth removed and, a few years later, I had the other two wisdom teeth pulled. I was awake for both procedures.

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction - awake or put to sleep?
I just had my upper wisdom tooth pulled last Saturday!
I was totally awake and didn't feel one iota of pain. They put on this gel that numbed my cheeks and gum so that I wouldn't feel the Novocaine shot (which worked!). I only felt pressure from the dentist pushing and twisting -- no pain at all.
He gave me a prescription for Vicodan and told me to take 2 before the numbness wore off. Worked like a charm.....

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction - awake or put to sleep?
I had impacted on both sides and I've been awake AND asleep. I got the left side done awake and right side done asleep.
I highly recommend being asleep. Not a pleasant experience when you are awake.

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction - awake or put to sleep?
Mine were impacted and I was asleep- you don't want to be awake for that.
ETA: I did it in highschool, 2 at a time, 1 year appart. They were all impacted.

Re: Wisdom teeth extraction - awake or put to sleep?
I've had it both ways, and honestly, I'm a total scardy cat when it comes to dentists, but the pain was not all that bad. Plus I heard of too many accidental overdose cases and people dying in dentist chairs...that will not be me!!

OMG are you trying to give me a heartattack?! like im not paranoid and freaked out as it is!
i'm opting for being knocked out. my BIL said he was awake with novacaine when they pulled his and that it was the worst experience of his life. he said the dentist was literally straddling him and he heard the cracking of his tooth and it was terrible. so i'll be asleep thank you very much!
