Re: With all the home invasions on the news lately...
A rise in home invasions would not change how I feel about guns. I don't like having them in my home and it is a point of contention between me and DH because he does have them in our home (for the time being).
I think it's almost completely pointless to have a gun for the purpose of protecting yourself from robbers and such. From what I understand, to abide by laws and guidelines you are supposed to keep the gun locked up and the ammo separate. By the time you get the gun unlocked, go get the bullets, and load the gun to defend yourself and your family, I would think that the intruder would have long since gotten the upperhand...
I always say this to my DH and he seems to think that he's superman and he can do all this before anything happens Maybe we should do a "home invasion drill" so I can prove him wrong...

I think a gun in the home is way more dangerous than the off chance that someone might break into my home.
The rate of male sucide is much higher in household that own a gun. Since my FIL died that way, I would rather not tempt fate.

For those who would like to defend themselves with a gun and say they would have no problem firing to protect themselves..
do you really think you could shoot another person in that circumstance? Do you think you could have your wits about you to do it with any accuracy? I would think a trained person in firearms would even have a difficult time pointing a gun at someone and pulling the trigger.
I know I couldn't. if I learned how to use one, I doubt I would have any issues using it if someone broke into my home. obviously no one knows until they are in that situation and I hope to never find out. but if it's a choice between my life and the intruder, they lose!

If I heard someone break into my house and I was able to get to the gun I would have no problem shooting them. Not at all. I wouldn't stand there and give them a warning either. That would just give them a chance to attack you. If you break into my house then I have every right to protect myself and my family.
ETA: When you adrenaline kicks in you get the "fight or flight". I usually get the fight.

I don't think I could ever harm anyone intentionally EXCEPT if it came down to them or me. If I was going to be raped or killed- you better believe I will shoot. What it the alternative? Letting them kill you because you can't pull the trigger? No way!
Yes but by the time you know you will be raped or killed it would be too late to protect yourself.

Re: With all the home invasions on the news lately...
We have several firearms in the home, but they're not for safety reasons. My DH was an avid hunter and occasionally still hunts. We're currently in the process of buying a firearm safe.
My father was in law enforcement, so I grew up with firearms in the home. My father didn't hide them from us, instead he taught us about them. They were always unloaded and the trigger had a lock or cuffs on them. AND we were always told that in case of a break-in, we were never to go for the gun because it would most likely be used against us. My sister and I had no desire to "play" or "see" the gun and I truly believe it's because my dad didn't make it a "secret".

Re: With all the home invasions on the news lately...
I know how to use one. And have @ the range many times.
DH is a cop & hunter so there a many fire arms in the house. We are both trained in using them & the safety involved with every one of them.
They are all locked up. Or on DH at all times.
When baby arrives we will be attaching the trigger locks to them all as well.
The recent home invasions have had no impact on our position of firearms.
