The rise in home invasions might prompt me to invest in a home security system, but definitely not a gun.

NEVER!!! I have 2 kids in the house and no matter how safe you think you'll be with the gun................kids get into EVERYTHING and I can't take that kind of chance with my kids' lives. JMHO.

My parents and brother were victim to a violent home invasion 2 years ago. They were woken from their beds with guns to their heads, tied down and completely robbed.

My father feels what saved their life was that he did not have a gun. His amatuer attempt to save his family could have gotten them all killed. By cooperating with the robbers it made a HORRIBLE situation not a fatal one.

ETA: After 16 mos the robbers were caught. Each is spending 25+ years on additional crimes committed. The NC police believe these were the same two men that went around LI all that time.

I have 2 small children. I wouldn't feel safe with a gun in the house - even if it were in a lockbox. My feeling is that the likelihood of my kids finding that gun may be higher than the likelihood of a home invasion.

Beyond that - even if someone did break into my home - I would need to locate the key, get the box, unlock it, get out the gun, load it (maybe) and have it ready to point, aim and shoot all before this person is upon me? And then I have to believe that I would be able to pull the trigger? I am not sure I could? If I hesitate and they disarm me - have I just given a dangerous criminal another weapon? And I hate to think of someone just squeezing that trigger in fear and panic - what if the person is not a foe? What if it is DH who forgot his keys and is slipping in the backdoor to avoid waking you? What if it is a robber and you shoot and MISS? Now you have succeeded in pissing off an already dangerous person.

Ugh. I hate thinking about it. Too much potential to go wrong. I am NOT cut out for gun use.

That's some of my biggest arguments about not wanting a gun in the house. To make it accessible and "useful" in a home invasion situation, it needs to be loaded and in a convenient place..... like somewhere that a toddler could get to.... Chat Icon

The risks of harming myself or my family is so much higher by having a gun in the house that for me, it far outweighs any perceived benefits.

ITA! And that is exactly my reasoning for NEVER having a gun in my house. We have an alarm with motion detectors and a silent ambush code. I pray that if GOD FORBID we experienced a home invasion, police would act swiftly and take matters into their hands. It's not worth my fear of my children (or their friends that visit) finding a gun in my home.

Add me to the list of those in agreement!

Re: With all the home invasions on the news lately...

Growing up, my father had a gun in the house, as well as a rifle that he used for hunting...they were always locked up and we never saw them...but the pistol was always there for safety since we didn't have a home alarm

at our house we have a home alarm and three dogs...someone would be stupid to break in...but DH was looking into getting a gun to go hunting

I've been around law enforcement my whole life so guns do not phase me. I've never fired one although I know how to use one. I plan on getting my permit and actually firing it. If someone did enter my home I would have no problem using it to protect myself.

Scary! I'm glad they are okay!

DH and I know how to shoot rifles and handguns but we would never keep a gun in our house. We don't know how to subdue criminals. I'm comfortable with a security system and our dog. Her bark will scare them away. She has before while living in S. Mpls.

DH's parents keep a loaded handgun in a high cabinet in their house. FIL is trained for emergency situations and they live in a rural area, where it would take police a while to get there. I never thought twice about it until the first time we stayed with them with our DD. When she's mobile, we will not stay there unless they unload it and lock it up.

Whoever answered that you have one and need to learn how to use it - WTH are you waiting for?

That is beyond irresponsible. I'm surely hoping that your SO knows how to use one?

I'm extremely anti-guns in MY home. We *may* have hunting rifles at some point or another for DH -- but never a handgun and our guns will always be LOCKED in a gun cabinet and the bullets will be stored in a separate locked compartment.

You're far more likely to get hurt by a gun in your home in the event of an intrusion than you are to ward off the intruder successfully.

Honestly, if we ever buy a house I wouldn't be opposed to DH getting a license and getting once of those babies...

Same here. I wouldn't mind learning how to either. I might feel differently about owning guns if we had children in the house though.

In general, I've always been paranoid about home invasion. It's why I like living in a doorman building so much. I feel more secure than I would living in a house and I don't get nervous when DH is out of town and I'm home by myself (like I would in a house). I watched too many scary movies growing up Chat Icon

For those who would like to defend themselves with a gun and say they would have no problem firing to protect themselves..

do you really think you could shoot another person in that circumstance? Do you think you could have your wits about you to do it with any accuracy? I would think a trained person in firearms would even have a difficult time pointing a gun at someone and pulling the trigger.

I know I couldn't.

This is a great point. You never know until you are in the situation how you will react. Also you don't really know who you are up against (as far as their skill & training).

As far as the people who have SOs in law enforcement, are you allowed to shoot their pol. issued weapon?Chat Icon I was pretty sure this is a no-no.

I have definitely thought of owning and learning how to use one. I am against them for (obviously) street violence but I do believe in the right to bear arms. Permit and all, of course.

I grew up around guns also. My father was a NYPD detective.

I too have never actually fired one but I do know how to use one. I would feel SO MUCH SAFER, knowing I had a way to protect myself.

Also, when it comes to my family, I would have NO problem defending myself and them. ESPECIALLY my daughter. When it comes to her, WATCH OUT! I will shoot to kill anyone who tries to harm us, and I wouldnt think twice!

Re: With all the home invasions on the news lately...

For those who are saying they would like to have one...have you investigated the safety courses or the means needed to get a permit? Also, do you know if your county requires a different permit for ownership or carry? I just think that it is not something to just"jump into." I grew up in an environment where guns were around, I grew up to fear and respect what a person with a gun could do, and what responsibility comes with owning & heaven forbid having to fire it. It is not something to say lightly or in passing, IMO. And regardless of whether you are protecting yourself or your family know that you life changes forever if you ever have to pull the trigger.Chat Icon

I hope this does not come of as hypocritical, because it is not, I am merely saying that the utmost consideration and research/education needs to come into play with such a decision.

My brother is in law enforcement and he has an issued duty weapon and an off-duty weapon which was privately purchased. I'd imagine most people are referring to their SO's off duty piece.

One person did before I posted this -- and if you read my post I said "I'm surely hoping that your SO knows how to use one." -- Many people chose this response. As you can see - I did assume it was b/c it was their SOs. If it's not, then they should really know what they are doing with it. I still stand by what I said - it would be irresponsible to own a gun and not know how to handle it safely. Clearly, if your SO is a cop and it's his gun, that's a different story.

I don't think I could ever harm anyone intentionally EXCEPT if it came down to them or me. If I was going to be raped or killed- you better believe I will shoot.
What it the alternative? Letting them kill you because you can't pull the trigger?

Agreed- I mean, who knows how anyone would react to anything.
All I am saying is I want to be able to at least try to fend someone off as best I could.
Some chance is better than none at all IMO.
