WWYD - kind of a road rage question (long) - Update

I'm driving home with Jack from school and I'm almost onto my block...we live in a no outlet. This jeep pulls out of a driveway and almost hits me - I swerve to get out of the way - and honk.

I notice that he is now coming in my direction (when to get to the main road you have to go the other way) - so I don't stop at my house for fear that this psycho is following me. Sure enough - he was following me - every side road I turned down he was up my azz. I call up my friend - she tells me to give her his license plate number and try to get to the main road. I end up stuck at a light behind a stopped landscaping truck. This crazy old man gets out of the car comes to my car - I was stuck - his car was behind me and the truck in front of me - I had no where to go.

I rolled down my window (only did so bc he had an NYPD hat on with two badges) and he starts yelling at me. I said "You were the one who pulled out without looking" - he then goes on to say that I was going too fast ---- which I know for a fact I wasn't. He then yells at me for being on the phone - I said "I am on the phone because I am being followed and my friend is taking down your information for me! So you follow someone like a maniac claiming I'm going too fast, and you could possibly cause an accident - I'm 9 months pregnant with my son in the car" - we went back and forth a few times but I am still shaken up about this. Crazy old man.

Anyhoo - here is the WWYD part of the question - my DH is flipping the F out about this and wants to go to this guys house. I don't think he should go - I don't want to start any problems. My DH thinks it's unacceptable that this guy thinks he can chase cars around our neighborhood. I don't know what to do - but my DH has a bad temper so I'm a little worried! Chat Icon

Update:
So I called the police - basically there is nothing they can do since no crime was committed (thank god) and apparently if this happens again I should call them right away.

So, now I know - and now this idiot gets away with chasing people down with no conseqences at all - not even a talk from the police. Oh well. Chat Icon

I wouldn't have my DH go to his house, but since you know where he lives AND his license number, call you call the police and have them pay him a visit?

Unacceptable that this crazy guy would follow you!!!!! But I completely understand what you mean when you say you dont want to start anything b/c this nut is from your neighborhood. Ugghhh I wish I knew the right thing to tell you to do. Definately a tough situation to be in. As torn as I am....part of me thinks maybe you should take this to the cops.... give them his license plate number. He put your life in danger by following like a maniac.

Was he actually a cop? just wearing a hat doesn't meant anything... If he was, i would've gotten his badge number and reported him.

However, definitely do not have your DH go over there - if he's heated, it could escalate into a situation you don't need.
If he's that upset over it, file a report with the police that this man followed you and approached your car then leave it at that. If he really is doing this to other people (not sure why he would unless he lies in wait for people to pass by) then they'll have a record of it

He was a retired cop he said (the only reason I rolled down the window was bc of the hat with the badges - and there were tons of landscapers around looking at us)

The thing that gets me fired up is that he claims I was going too fast - yet he was the one who didn't see me until he almost hit me and I started honking!!! It makes ZERO sense!

People like that scare the heck out of me. You are brave, I would not have even rolled my window down. You are also smart for not stopping at your house! I would call it in to the police and leave it at that.

I have had 2 issues in the last month with people riding up my butt b/c they did not like that I was driving 35 on a 30 mph road. In addition to the fact that it was 3:00 and there were a ton of school buses all over. It is so scary, you just never know what people are going to do Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Believe me, I am the biggest wimp and would normally never open the window - EVER - but I was stuck behind that truck - and he had me blocked in. The only way out would have been to run him over.

I was really playing on the pregnancy card and hoping that once he saw that he would back off. I was hysterical crying too bc my son was in the car. People are really so nuts out there - it's very scary!

Whether or not you were going too fast or not isn't the issue, following someone, getting out of your car & "threatening" them is road rage.

I would call the police & file a report. If he's a retired cop then he needs to get over the fact that he's not in charge of writing tickets. The fact that he had his NYPD hat on WITH badges, could possibly qualify him for impersonating a cop.

Glad you talked DH out of going down there.

Your DH should NOT go to his house. What if he has a gun/shotgun?

Call the cops and make a report. That's the right way to handle this.

It is unacceptable what that guy did and I can see why James would want to go to his house. Crap, I am heated for you right now, I want to go to the guys houseChat Icon

Sorry you went through this! Do you pass that house alot? Does that guy live at the house or was he visiting?

I would call the police and file a report. I would cry and tell them that you are feeling very unsafe and fear that he will come back to your house. Tell them you are due in 2 weeks!

Wow!

I definitely think the guy was out of line! That was way innapropriate! I would have done exactly what you did.

As far as your DH goes, I know mine would do the same thing. I'd just try to calm him down; him saying/doing anything could cause more trouble and that could escalate. I'd calm him down and leave it be. Chat Icon

I wouldn't give DH his address but I do agree with your DH that what he did was unacceptable. Not to mention, him following you and you trying to get away from in your area which the streets are narrow to me and very curvy could have caused another accident in it's self.

If he was an actual retired cop, shame on him for doing that.

Harrassment. Go to your precinct and make a police report. Completely unacceptable for anyone to do this, let alone a retired cop. Who's he to tell you how fast you are going or being on the phone. He's not working, ridiculous. The way I see it, always CYA. Glad you didn't go home too.

Re: WWYD - kind of a road rage question (long)

I thought I got DH off the idea of going - but he is still crazy over it. All he wants to say is that his life was in that car and who does the guy think he is to chase people around the neighborhood. I don't think this guy is going to give a rats azz. He knew was he was doing. I'd rather give the info to the cops and let them deal with it.
