WWYD? UPDATE
I just got called for an intervier for a LI school district that is so far from home I might as well stay in the city. I said yes to the interview but I realize now that I would have to find a babysitter for DD (I am on maternity leave) and honestly I really do not want to have to drive that far everyday. I might as well take the train to the city which would be less stressful. Should I call and cancel? I know it is good practice but it is just so far...... and other districts have been calling me so it isn't like I am turning down my one and only chance.....WWYD?
Update:
So I cancelled the interview. I just couldn't see driving from Centereach to Hewlett every single day. Plus with the cost of gas it would have cost more to fill up my car then to buy a monthly on the LIRR. I know it would have been good practice but I have had several interviews already with call backs and I have one on Wednesday with a district much closer to home. I just can't see driving all the way there for I job I know I wouldn't accept.
Thank you for all your opinions!

even if you knew you wouldn't accept the job if it was offered?

Re: WWYD?
If you have never been on a Long Island school district interview, I would go anyway. The interview experience is worth while. Also, even though it is almost as far as NYC, is it substantially more money?

I've been teaching for 6 years in the city so the money in the beginning would actually be a lot less. I am thinking long term would I actually want to commute that far with traffic for the rest of my teaching career? I am looking for a position that I can stay with for the next 25 years. I've been on LI interviews before.

in the long run the pay will be significantly more and you can go much higher than MA+30 and that is what will matter in the end. you're talking tens of thousands a year. i have a massive commute to my LI district and the city would be closer, but i would never give up my LI job because that was the job i wanted. i never thought i would be able to drive this far, but i do it because it's worth it for my salary, benefits and sanity.
if your goal is to get a job on LI, i would NEVER turn down a job interview regardless of where it was. if your goal is to stay in the city, then don't bother.
i would go and see what happens. you have nothing to lose.

Re: WWYD?
I may be in the minority here but I wouldn't go if you're sure you don't want the job. I went on an interview once in Great Neck and as I was driving there realized it was way too far for me. (I live in Eastern LI) I went on the interview since I was already there and was actually offered a part time job. I turned it down but it was very awkward. Also, if you already think it's too far then it probably is. When I interviewed with my current district I knew it was far (not as far as Great Neck but still far) and I took the job when they offered it. Now as much as I love my job I kind of regret taking it. I have at least an hour commute each way and I have been there so long it would be hard to leave. I think you are right for wanting to look for something closer to home. Good luck!
