Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
My parents would always let me sit at the bar with them in the same situation, so I wouldn't think anything of it.

I wouldn't think twice about it. Actually, I'd probably be thinking about the fact that I haven't had a Shirley Temple in a looooong time! Man those were good!

If it's a busy night and I'm a patron who walks in and wants to sit at the bar, I'd have a problem with it, not because they're kids, but because they're just sitting there not really drinking and taking up a seat.
If it's like an afternoon lunch kinda thing, when things are slower, then I wouldn't care at all.
im not saying your opinion is wrong... but is it really a huge problem to stand... idk what restaurant this was but i doubt their wait was more than a half hour...
im sure people would have a problem being at the bar with a 3 & 5 year old running around... at least in the seat they arent bothering anyone...

I grew up in a bar- it's definitely an Irish thing. We actually held our Irish step dancing classes for the parade in the bar on Sundays afternoons.
lol-I was going to mention this! In Ireland it was a different vibe-it would be normal to see kids in a bar (even a bar bar with no restaurant). They were cute-they got so excited when they saw their red drinks! We were the only other couple there so it was a calm environment. I wonder if it would be different if the bar was packed and loud. I have been to restaurant bars during happy hour and some of them can get rowdy (even at a nice restaurant!). Thanks for weighing in!
I'm not Irish, but I believe there is a big cultural difference between bars here in the US and pubs there. In Europe, and especially in smaller towns there, the local bar/pub is where everyone meets, where everyone eats, where parties are held, it's almost the center of the town.

we really need to do a better job of hiding our children from society, apparently.
I can't with threads like these. leaves such a bad taste in my mouth.
I think I didn't know what to think. It felt a little strange but it wasn't a bad thing. Like I said, growing up it was normal when I went to Ireland. I would eat crisps and drink Coke with my family. I wasn't sure if the culture was the same here since I don't see it very often. (I probably should have added all this to my original post.)

you know what, I probably shouldn't have posted that anyway. my fingers walked before my brain thought it through.
there is a cultural divide happening now though that really bothers me. a disdain for children that is starting to permeate our society. I noticed it before I had my son, and I hated it then. but now I REALLY hate it.

But the kids were given drinks, albeit non-alcholic. How often do we actually get seats at the bar on a busy night.. I'm not trying to start anything, and I totally respect your opinion, but I think it was absolutely wonderful of the parents to bring the children to the bar and get them a drink and make them feel included and from what I read, they were not causing a rucus.
I feel parents should include their children more adult oriented activities.. its just good for all of us in the long run.

I can understand your discomfort. It's a bar. You weren't there with kids. I don't blame you. I don't want to have to watch my words when I'm in an adult environment which a bar is.
It wouldn't bother me (especially since they are probably just waiting for a table) other than the fact of watching what I say within ear shot of a child. I can have a bad mouth
See, as a parent, I figure if I choose to sit my kid in an adult environment, he is going to hear what he is going to hear - you shouldn't have to censor yourself. He's probably heard worse around certain family members visiting my house.
I don't think it's a big deal if they are just waiting for a table. They aren't taking up the seats pounding shirley temples all night long.
I actually saw this recently and thought it was very cute - the restaurant bar was not crowded at all and the kids were so excited to sit at the bar with mom and dad.

I don't see anything wrong with it but I'd find it annoying as a CF adult...if I wanted to sit next to kids I'd be at Chucky Cheese
LOL i agree

this is JMO so no flames for my opinin0
but
if in out with my husband at a nice place and we are paying a lot for a night out and want to enjoy a drink at the bar, i'd be miffed if a child was taking up a bar stool drinking their chocolate milk, while im standing there in my heels balancing my martini.
i dont think that area is a place for kids.
most kid friendly restaurants have waiting areas. if the parents need to have a drink, mom or dad can purchase one at the bar and bring it to the waiting area.
just to mention - Friday's doesnt allow kids in the bar area- you must be 21- and i agree with this
ETA... im not a mom ...so i dont have the issue of waiting with kids...so i may not understand completely until i am a parent...this is my childless take on it, though

Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
I don't think the bar is an appropriate waiting area for kids. If that was the only place for them to wait, I'd understand, and I wouldn't be annoyed - but if there are other places for them to sit and wait then yes, it might bother me. I think it would depend on my mood though.

Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
I was in a simialr situation & it felt strange to me. At this restaurant the only area to wait is the bar, so it made sense--it's just not usually that crowded, so I had never seen so many kids there.
It felt strange, not that THEY were there--but that I was--like I should be on my best behavior!

Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
Doesn't bother me any...their butts are just as entitled to the seats as mine are, plus I'm sure it makes the kids a lot easier to handle while they wait.

as a bartender in a resturant- I am used to it- and ok with it as look as it's early enough not to take seats away from adults

Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
but the big question should be...was the mom in sweat pants? had she showered that day? was she wearing make up...hair done?
if I made all that effort to go out and look good. I'd want to be seen at the bar with MY martini too looking cool with my little gorgeous accesory in tow!
