Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
I grew up in a bar. Literally. My parents owned it and we lived upstairs from it. We were in there all the time (It was a hole in the wall neighborhood bar, so not taking away from anyone that was out for a fancy night). I also heard more colorful language from my mom than any of the customers.
I didn't start doing body shots until i was AT LEAST 11 years old, and i intend to strictly enforce that rule for both of my DDs as well

Many of us CFers have this sense of entitlement of having a child free zone when they go out.. and I only see that here.. everywhere else in the world, children are welcomed into the fold, and as a result are more mature because of it. I understand that we must treat a child like a child, but part of growing up is to learn how to act and behave in social settings, and how else to do that but to actually put them right into it.
Exactly!

Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
We had lunch at a bar/restaurant this past weekend.
My friend and I put our toddler boys at the bar while we waited for a table. the bartender served the kiddies orange juice and the adults alcohol.
It was no big deal since it was during the day.
It may be weird at night if it was all adults around.

Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
DS was 7 weeks old in my baby bjorn we were on vacation in OC Maryland, DH wanted a drink, we went to the bar(in a restaurant) he had a beer I had a soda and DS was in my baby bjorn sleeping. One woman from across the bar actually took a picture of us, she thought she was doing it secretly but it was totally obvious when you heard the 'click'! Shes lucky I didnt jump across the bar.

I think nothing.
Ditto. My kids would get a huge kick out of sitting on the high chairs and having a "special" drink

unless they were sitting there all night i wouldnt think twice about it...
same here. they were probably sitting there for 30 minutes at most waiting to be seated in the restaurant area. i'd be okay with it... no biggie imo.

I don't a child yet, so I can say this while I'm still counted under the CF umbrella..
This past weekend, DH and I went for sushi at semi nice place, and we noticed a little girl, no more than 7 eating sushi with chopsticks!! I'm sure she learned from her parents going to restaurants. She handled it so, well and I was so impressed. How many 7 year olds will actually eat sushi without making a face? I don't know any.. not one! So maybe this whole idea of "knowing your place" in society is kind of backfiring on us.
Many of us CFers have this sense of entitlement of having a child free zone when they go out.. and I only see that here.. everywhere else in the world, children are welcomed into the fold, and as a result are more mature because of it. This is my mindset. Maybe its because I live in the city, but I've been taking my daughters to all kinds of restaurants for years. in fact, I took her to Sushi Samaba at 3 weeks old. DD is now 4 1/2. I take her to all kinds of restaurants and I expect her to behave herself. She is actually learning how to use chopsticks and likes veggie sushi (but she eats them with her hands).
My theory is that if I take her to a restaurant and let her know my expectations of her behavior- she rises to it. If she misbehaves, I take her out. I haven't had to do that in years. Now I can take her to almost any restaurant and know that she will behave appropriately.
I took her to the Mumseum of Modern Art (MOMA) last weekend. Now, she is may not have appreciated the art as much as I did, but she knew how to behave.

Completely agree. We're like this with my kids, especially with DS since we had him in the city for a few years.
As far as the bar thing, as long as the children were well-behaved, I can honestly say it wouldnt have been even a blip on my radar.

Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
I have no problem with kids sitting at a bar per se.
But I was at a restaurant the other day and it was packed. We wanted to sit at the bar to have a drink but couldn't because there were families sitting there with their kids on the phones/ipads/etc waiting for tables. IMO that's wrong. The bar area is to have a drink or have food. It would be one thing if they were having an appetizer or something, but they were just using the seats.

I agree, but I think this would apply equally to adults and children. If you're sitting at the bar and taking someone else's spot, you should order something, no matter what your age.

If it was JUST a bar I might be but it is a restaurant, with a bar in it, the family was waiting for their table and getting a drink. I see nothing wrong with this.

Cai has been on the go everywhere since he was born - there were 2 other kids that he had to keep up with!
Cai is starting to use chopsticks for his avocado when we go out for Japanese!
I can see him sitting at a bar. I see nothing wrong with it. He would probably pick up a few chicks while he was at it

I thought it was against the law for kids to sit at a bar. One of my friends is a bartender at a chain restaurant with a bar and they are adament about children not sitting at the bar.
I think it is. W were out to eat recently and we were getting the kids ready to leave. My three yr old and a five year old climbed up on bar stools and the bartender told us that we had to tell them to get down because of this. Not to mention it was kind of a safety issue. They would have gotten hurt had they fallen off but they were horsing around.

Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
We stopped at a bar/restruant after a play with our child. For about 5 minutes of the end of the Jets game.. in an empty bar. Liam sat at the stool and drank his milk. The bartender made him move to a chair about a foot away from the bar. Apparently it's against the law to sit at the bar.
When I was growing up my Uncle owned an Irish pub in Queens. I sat at the bar, behind the bar etc.. I am not scarred for it. Nor am I a drunk. I don't know.. i don't see it as being such a big deal.

Re: Young children sitting at the bar.....
I do not see anything wrong with it either. I bring my daughter to all sorts of restaurants, museums, etc., and don't believe in the mindset of I cannot go to a patricular place because I have a daughter. She knows how to behave in special situations and I don't want her missing experiences because I am afraid she won't be able to behave. If I acted that way, she would never learn.
